First off, not sure which thread this belongs in. I didn't see a 626 thread eh?

Hi all... well I picked up a 2000 626 today and just as I suspected it is throwing a P0400 EGR code. Any writeups on how to clean this and get rid of this code? Knowing this community as well as I do I am sure one of you will point me in the right direction.

Also have a knocking noise on the back somewhere, almost sounds like a strut hitting something or maybe the exhaust but I beat on the exhaust while the car was still and did not hear anything. Ideas?

is it a V6 or I4 ? if it's an I4, i'm sure one of the protege guys should be able to help out. if it's a V6 your EGR might be clogged/dirty, i'm not familiar with OBD-II codes but it's a relatively common problem to have a dirty EGR in the v6's.

Guess not... stealership wants $500 to clean it up... WTF?!?

dealers shouldn't even try to clean it as it makes them liable for problem not being fixed... I can see $500 to REPLACE the part though

Ya I agree but that is the quote. They wouldn't be liable because nowhere does it say that will fix the P0400 EGR low flow code, this is just what the say should fix it and that they do it all the time. It would be a "chance" type situation completely up to the customer... AKA me. A gamble if you will. That's a lot of money to gamble with, at least for me.

I haven't taken a close look at the V6 lately, but I'm sure the same procedure for cleaning the V6 EGR will work for the I4 EGR. Just need to find it and remove it.

Ya... did that for 7 hours last Sunday. Sprayed carb cleaner in the ports and pushed the valve in and out and it did not appear to be stuck etc. I personally think the intake and such has severe carbon buildup. Not exactly sure what do do. Do you think I need to get it hooked up to a computer? It could be the sensor, the valve itself, exhaust restriction, vacuum leak... they can all cause this code. I seafoamed the motor through the intake inlet the day after I got the car... then a couple days ago I put half a can through the intake and the other half in the gas tank with a half a tank of gas and she smoked some more. Going to reset the ECU tomorrow morning to what happens but I don't think the CEL will be gone long. Dealership wants $500 to clean the intake system with BG chemicals etc. I am not sure what all that involves but that is a lot of money to me.
