View Full Version : Srmotorsports final drive gear...do it or not?

I'm in the slow process of rebuilding my motor and my tranny has been sitting there for weeks. Not only am I trying to find a place to weld my LSD but I've also been thinking about changing gear ratio's.
Srmotorsports has the 4.30 ratio final drive gear and it's very tempting. The thing is...I don't fully understand what the driving impressions would be besides having a taller 1st and 5th gear. That's my goal but what about:
1.Low end torque...how much would I lose?
2.Will the boost die out sooner...if I'm running stock turbo?
3.???
Just looking for the pros and cons...any personal experience on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone done this mod?

With a 4.30 final drive you would not have a taller 1st and 5th. You will have to shift sooner in every gear and your top speed will be lower. You will accelerate quicker however you will definitly run into traction issues sooner if you plan on modding your car significantly.

Weve run into problems welding old used LSD's. We had 2 of them break 3 weeks after they were done...just an FYI.
No problems with new out of the box welded LSD's.

if you want a taller 1st and 5th ive been looking into a probe tranny swap. Or a 626 tranny swap...i dunno about the ratios yet. I still dont know if this can be done tho.

I have a Probe tranny...On my second one now actually. I don't notice any difference in ratio, but then again it's been some time without my factory tranny. I think what is supposed to happen is 5th is longer but I don't know. It's like a 200RPM difference.

The 626 is suppose to have a taller 1st...i think dont hold me to it.

Yeah that's for sure, but i'm not 100% on the Probe. If (but most likely when) my current blows I will try to find a 626 and let everyone know.

Oh...no I can't crack them open and swap gears, not yet at least. I just pull the whole tranny from a junker and swap it in, till it breaks again. So far i'm getting an average of 6 months per tranny. :)

Glad I asked...I was thinking the opposite. My next step was to call up SR M with some questions...so thanks you saved me a long distance call.

I was afraid of hearing this....if I wasn't so broke right now, in general I'm the type to always buy new even if it ain't broken.
Guess I'll leave things as they are and cross my fingers. I'll either go new or a Quaife if and when mine craps out. It's a shame...cause now would be a perfect time.

Really eh....if only it was that easy. If I wasn't itching to get my car back on the road, I'd look into this. I'll keep this in mind for the future though and thanks!

if you find the gears a machine shop or tranny shop should be able to knock it out in a day. Shouldnt cost you anymore than 80 bucks.

I have a 1st gen Probe GT and must say that I only wish that my MSP had its 5th gear. The way it pulls is amazing in that gear at either boost setting.
Does it matter which year 5th you use if doing this swap?

I think their garbage, under serious driving conditions they brake just as easy as the stockers. Bang for your buck or for mine at least is an entire Probe tranny from any model and swap it in. To me it's $112 with a 30 day warranty and 5 hours of work. The most I could loose is my time and some tranny fluid.
