View Full Version : Prepping for first startup in 13 months, what should I look out for?

Ok I'm not going into the reasons for it, but my MSP has been garaged for 13 months. It has been 6 months since I have even started it up. Next week it is getting back on the road, and I need to make sure everything is clean and ready for the first startup.
The plan at this point:
Drop fuel tank (less than a gallon in there), remove fuel lines and injectors. Clean everything.
2 fresh gallons of gas, drive to station and fill up. Add seafoam to gas and oil.
Drive home, sea foam head, change oil, oil filter, fuel filter.
Is there anything else I should watch out for or change? I changed the trans fluid right before garaging it, so I am hoping that will be ok. Also gotta throw in a new battery, but I am looking for the less obvious ones that I might be overlooking.
Thanks guys.
You should double-check that the shipping address is correct .. before you send it to me. If it winds up getting lost in the mail, I will be very upset.

Maybe disconnect the coils and spin it over a few times to get the oil pressure up before it starts.

Agreed. Good luck with it.

I take it you didn't think to put fuel stabilizer in there?
I'd have a look at the coolant as well, just for grins.

Nope, no stabilizer.

Yeah going to flush the coolant as well. Several people who I trust have been telling me not to worry so much about the gas, but I still would rather over-do it than be lazy here.
There is literally max 1 gallon in there, and I changed the oil right before parking it. Can't imagine that anything has gone TOO bad after a year, but I have never parked a vehicle for this long so I don't know for sure..
Thanks for the replies fellas, keep 'em coming if you got anything else.

I'd add fresh oil and spin it by hand if you can and then change it before starting it. Add some premium gas and you should be good, the filter is there for a reason it does its job. I have thanked myself so many times now for getting a 5 gal fuel jug, I've been using it at least once a week recently.

I can't help but wonder as to why such a fun car sat for 13 months. Do that to a Rotary and say goodbye to those seals. Good luck with the startup!

Yeah that seems like the best way to do it. I'll change the oil before even cranking it just to make sure.

Yup had to do it even though I didn't want to, she'll still be fun though. (burnout)

I started a car up that was sitting for 2 years with unstabilized gas in the tank. Started right up and idled fine. Most of that stabilizer stuff is only good for 6 months. I did put an assortment of additives in the tank to cut any gum and varnish which may have built up. I think your oil will be fine, just crank it without starting it a few times to prime the turbo and engine. No reason why your car shouldn't fire right up based on how you've taken car of it.

I'd also be wary of the fuel filters. Tanks that have so little gas in them tend to develop rust from condensation, especially if it was parked outside. That rust will easily clog the fuel filter.

i turned on my car after 3 months and forgot that i had messed with the line that opens the throttle body, so after 16 tries it started up and shot up to and stayed at 5600RPM...my neighborhood was not pleased...but i celebrtated it starting up at all anyways. lol

Werd, good to hear from people who have started a stored car, thanks.

It was in a closed garage, and I live in New Mexico where it's dryer than a popcorn fart, so not too worried about rust yet. Will watch out though, thanks.

Everything went bueno. Changed the oil and it looked clean. Drained a little coolant and it was clean. Topped that back off, and swapped in a new battery. 4 fresh gallons of gas (didn't drain any of the old stuff), and pulled the coils. Turned it over for a bit and everything was sounding fine, so I hooked up the coils and she fired right up. One little sputter and then it was smooth.
The Rich is back bitches! Modding recommences this weekend.
