View Full Version : Squeaking coming from engine

Alright this noise has been coming from my car for about a week or so and i'm not sure what it is. It's sounds mostly like squeaking from belts or something but when i checked them out the belts were fine and i haven't really messed with anything in the engine bay that would cause it. I hear it the most when I shut off the car or when i am going really slow in first or second gear, (it may be there all the time but when i go a little faster i cant hear it). Is anyone else having a similar problem or noise? In any case i will be calling my service dept. to have them check it out but would like to hear any ideas on what it could be. Thanks

similar noise no doubt. i think its the serp. belt, but honestly don't know.
i'm not worried about it, but if you figure it out, let me know.

I don't know if it is starting to get louder or not but it is just really annoying. Do you guys think it can lead to something bad or are you guys just not worried about it?

I'm also a little nervous about taking my car to the dealer. When i took it for the mount, it took 6hrs for them to tell me that the car was ok and the mount didn't need to be changed. If they need to fix something it may be there for a week

I hear it too. Its especially noticeable during engine shut-down. Its the last thing you hear as the engine stops. Annoying!
I attribute it to a squeaky idler pulley, but it will be addressed at next service. I do suppose it could be the motor mount too, but it sounds too much like a pulley bearing or something like that. I once had a Celica GTS do this incessantly, and it turned out that the engine (which spun way up in the 8K range) was overspeeding the idler pulley at higher levels, and was killing the bearings. I had it replaced 3 times before I sold the thing.

now that i think about it I don't think I've heard it since I got the awr mount. i'll repost tomorrow and keep an ear out for it but I used to hear it every single time I would shut the car off.

Alas ! i thought it was just me ! I hear same noise, sounds like belts clinging an stuff. Anyways, i hear it more on idle, specially at night. also, after u run the car hard, then idle it, u hear it more. I did open up the hood, and the sound seems louder.....should this be a concern guys, will the dealer fix this sound ? or is it normal ?????

got my car back from the dealer, and it is still up in the air. The service writer heard it when I pulled in and stopped, and noted it. I got most of the recall work done, but still need to go in and have them redo the #4 trans mount thing (they did it once, a long time before the RECALL actually came out), and when they do that, they want to look long and hard at all the mounts and make sure everything is ok. Parts are on their way.

Just posted on a similar topic as well- Have you noticed the sound occuring over bumps or hard vibrations? I've started experiencing a similar noise as well. Seems like the colder weather has brought it on. Sounds like a cricket chirp! Is this what you guys are suffering from, or am I in a completely different boat?

I don't think its a belt because the squeak is only occuring during a bump in the road or a vibration from the car (ex.- the engine rock from turning off the ignition). I think its either suspension related or something under the dash "when its cold" kind of sounds. I hope this is the same sound Pale Fire was reffering to in the original post. If not, I don't want to hyjack this thread!!

had the same noise just took it to the dealer and they said it was the heat shield they fixed it but then it came back 3 days later

I used to hear it when I would turn it off but seems like its gone away after they replaced the transmission. (wedge)
I assumed it was the belts squeaking . I still think it was the belts because it would only do it when I was going slow say through a parking lot and when I would turn it off . I think it was the engine putting tourque on the belts .

yup I got the same thing going on here, here in orlando it is starting to cool off a little so after some hwy driving I pull her in and when I flip off the ignition I hear this slight squeak! I am really worried that it is something tranny or belt related due to sensetive those areas are!
I am doubting my speed3 longevity!!! I have been to teh dealer more with this car so far than a year in my MKV GTI, I feel like I made a stupid choice trading in the car!
Plus it is hell trying to explain this to the dealership with a busy schedule!
On another post, it was mentioned that the spring clamp on the exhaust housing may be the culprit. do we all have stock exhaust pieces for those of us experiencing this noise?

Stock exhaust set-up here. I tried to solve the squeaking yesterday morning, but it came back after 10 minutes on the highway...but then seemed to disappear once back to city driving. I started saturday by kicking the exhaust tip a few times to see if something would squeak, lol! (On my old RSX-S I had an Apex-i exhaust with hangers that clunked against the car's underbody and was hoping this was something similar, but no luck.) I checked out the front sway bar nuts, but they seemed to be snug. Someone mentioned heat sheilds so checked the ones around the cat and turbo, but they seemed snug. There actually was some insulation between the turbo and firewall which seems to be fastened by some plastic hex nuts I finger tightened, but I doubt that was the culprit. I thought maybe it was the power steering fluid reservoir rocking around over bumps and during shut-off, so I removed the fasteners and greased everything up there. However, the squeek came back. My passenger said it was coming from the center console. After she told me that, I recalled reading a post somewhere that the unconnected wire harness for the navigation on cars not equipped with that option from the factory were rattling inside the dash. I'm not in a hurry to tear my dash apart though, so I'll let this go a few days and see if this squeaking settles itself during the week.
All of you having the bird/mice/cricket squeaks over bumps or vibration: on top of what exahust set-up you have, are your cars equipped with the factory navigation system? Also what are the outdoor temps when you experience the noise? We'll pinpoint this eventually...

My car is an 08 with 1300 miles on it and I do not have factory navigation and my exhaut is stock.

I never ended up making that appointment at the dealer so my apologies to everyone. I've just been really busy and stuff. Anyway, I have a stock exhaust and no navigation. As far as the temp goes, it was happening when it was 90+ degrees out but only after the car was warmed up a good amount. If the car is sitting overnight then, say, I move it in the morning but only have it on for like a couple of minutes, no noise...

I hope this is what some of you guys are experiencing during shut-off because I haven't really heard it as much then as when I hit a bump or vibration on the road half way into my trip to work, but I found my cricket this morning!!
I hope this goes for all or most of you, but its the center console thats squeaking in mine. I smacked it when I was driving to work today as the sound came back, and it went away for a period of time. I was able to keep it from coming back by applying pressure to the right side of the center console, (on the passenger side to the right side of the cig. lighter/power output.) Squeeze this ride side making sure to hold some pressure towards the driver side against the plastic panel which overlaps your shifter. All it should take is either some tightening up or foam adheisive tape, something to dampen the squeaking.
Hope this helps...good luck!!

Its worth a try, but I think most people are experiencing a more metallic sound coming from the engine or underside of the car. Good Find though PLM!

Yea, the more responses I read since first posting, the more I thought their sounds were coming from the engine bay or below and were not like mine, however I couldn't locate mine because it was such a high pitched sound and would have never thought it was a plastic panel chirping. Hope it helped someone out there. PLM man away!!

another post had mentioned an exhaust spring bolt, which is some what plausible due to most describing the occurance after the car has been driven hard or has had sufficient time to reach operating temps.

i get the same squeak in my speed 3, anytime there is a change in momentum, and sudden movement.
it sounds like a cricket chirp.

I am tryiing to ressurect this thread because it continues to happen. I combed another post and there was mention of the exhast bolts or a heat shield that could be the culprit.
Any thoughts or ideas? My main concern is that it is a belt squeak that is the issue that frightens me.

I posted the portion below in another thread before I knew about this thread...
I have started hearing a chirp/belt noise but not from hitting bumps. I notice it when I am in any gear right at 3,000rpm, if you let off the gas, there is a short chirp. So basically, I can make it chirp by both letting off and getting on the gas right at 3,000rpm. Now that I can re-create it with regularity, I am going to take it in. Sucks though since I only have roughly 6,600 miles and no mods.

I had a squeak too when hitting bumps, but especially when I turned the engine off. It was the muffler coupling springs under the car. Sounded like it was coming from the front right of the car, so it took me a while to locate it. It sounds like it is coming from the front left because of the driver side vents and window I assume. But in my case it was the springs and coupling on the muffler. I had just installed my CBE too by the way when I started hearing it.

Ok everyone I went to pick my car form the dealer the other day, for the recalls, and the head dude told me that they could'nt duplicate the sounds. So i told him i would point it out to him when i got there. After the car is good and warmed up we head back to the shop and pop the hood. I turn off the car then he finally hears what I'm talking about. He says it may be the intakes maf sensor so he tells me to turn the car back on and that he will pull out the sensor when i turn it off. Guess what??? No more chirp/squeek!!! I started to think "why would that be causing a squeek sound?" So we do the test a couple more times and I notice that he was holding the intake with one hand and the sensor with the other and that when he's not holding it, the sound returns. So with the maf in, he just holds the intake and while i turn off the car. It doesn't make a sound while he does this. So i think it is the intake moving around and making the sound. Do you guys that are having this problem have an intake installed. Try to have someone hold it and see if it still makes the sound. And if that doesn't get rid of the sound, sorry for wasting your time, haha

well i have had an anoying squeek and its defenitly coming from my exhaust somewhere i hear it when i turn my car off or when im rockin back and fourth in first gear in like traffic or something. i went to the back of my car and moved the exhaust around from the tip and there was the squeeky noise, i cant tell exactly where it is coming from on the exhaust but it is there somewhere, it kinda sounds like its coming from the rubber exhuast hanger and the metal part is rubbing inside the rubber making a squeek. does anyone no of anything i can spray on the hangers to lubricate them with that will last.

I'd suggest greasing the inside of the rubber hangers with some synthetic grease just like you do to the rubber on suspension sway bars and their brackets. WD40 would probably work, but I don't know how long it would last.

Well I just got the call back from my Mazda tech, of course none of this has been confirmed yet but, the squeak was indeed coming from an exhaust spring clamp. They were able to somehow fix the issue as well as get rid of my squeaking clutch pedal. Of course once I go and pick the car I will give you guys a full break down as to the procedures they went through.

Ok here goes, the squeaky clutch pedal is indeed an issue and Mazda has a fix for it. However looking on the invoice that i got back it does not give a part number. However it is described at "installed new clutch position switch".
My squeak is now gone. Turns out it was not the belts but rather the round hub and spring hinges on the exhaust. The tech was able to duplicate the sound and states " exhaust gaskets squeaking. Cleaned, buffed, and installed copper grease" So far there has been no return of the noise. I will give more of an update later after some longer driving. I hope this information will help someone.

This is what I found too. I noticed it after I drove the car hard and really moved the engine around the exhaust pivot joint. After I wiggled the exhaust pipe a bit the squeaking stopped.

Count me in on this issue. Today I noticed what sounded like an engine belt squeak as I turned the ignition off. I even get it to squeak by every so lightly blipping the throttle during idle. My gf couldn't hear it and thought I was crazy- so you have no idea how good it feels to know I'm not!
Now reading through this thread I'm still at a loss as to what the cause is. Seems like people are split. One thing to note is that I started hearing this AFTER I had my SU rear motor mount installed. Maybe it was there before but never noticed it, I just figured it was worth mentioning.
I hope we can nail down what the culprit is and possibly find a fix that doesn't require a trip to the dealer.
