First post here and I already have a problem. Today my #4 cylinder went out...some how my piston slapped my sparkplug, so a rebuild is in order. Any suggestions for manuals and routes that I can go from here?

the piston slapped your sparkplug? are you sure you didn't have a timing belt failure that caused your piston hit the valves instead? I have heard that the fs is a non-inteference motor, but people have had problems with that.

i would head over to protegegarage.com and check out their engine section. you can scoop up a stock fs for about 995.00 . Or, if you want to build up power, get the forged shortblock for like 2500 ish ( I don't remember the exact price)

There was damage to the sparkplug so, I assume the piston hit it. What is a non-inteference motor? How can I tell if there is a problem with the timing belt?

Check out Protegegarage.com or Speedcircuit.net and get a built block :)

a non interference motor means that in the event that the timing belt breaks, and the valves are down, the piston will not hit them. Also, the piston shouldn't move far enough up to hit the spark plugs. What kind of damage did you sustain to the spark plug? Is it like bent or what?

The top of the sparkplug was bent down about 90 degrees and it was touching the electrode. There is a chatter when the car runs now, so I am in the process of removing the valve cover to see if anything is screwed up in the top of the valve train. Any ideas about what I could be dealing with?

Sounds to me like we have a case of the butterfly manifold screws coming loose. Stick a magnet down in the cynlinder through the top of the spark plug cylinder. And see if u pull up any kind of screws or such.

Please give me more information about this potential problem that you are talking about. Any tips to get the valve cover off after all bolts are removed and all sensors are unplugged? Should I just wiggle and pull upward?

Yes, and if it comes down to it, just get a flat head and pry it up. You will need a new gasket if it comes to that tho.
