This is my first time posting in the MSP section, usually MS3. But I have a few questions for you owners. I have always liked the MSP and when I look for them all the nice ones are like 600+ miles away. So it really puts a damper on things. Blue, Orange and Gray are my fav. Here we go
1. What kind of Hp does the MSP have and what are its 0-60 times.
2.Are there anythings that I should look for when checking one out.
3. Are they known for any problems.
4.Can the car keep up with some of its competition, say a MS3
5.What years were they produced.
Thanks for the help

1. Stock Msp has 170hp.. 0-60 times are in the 6-7 sec area.. Dont know the exact number, but its not that impressive..
2. Look for the normal things that you look for when buying a used car..
3. Yes, they are known for quite a few problems.. There is a list around here somewhere I think..
4. With quite a few mods, they can keep up with MS3's.. Stock, no..
5. 2003, 2003.5...

Thanks for posting, I appreciate it. So from what you said the MSP seems to be a little disapointing. I mean they look good and all, but the 0-60 is not impressive, they have quite a few problems. I think I will keep saving for a
MS3:rolleyes:

If you are looking for straight ahead speed then yes you would probably be disappointed. It is quick but not fast. If you like taking corners at high speeds in a rare, nicely factory equipped (especially for the price), good looking car then you would be very satisfied. There has not been a single day I have regretted buying this car. (first)

if you buy a msp , forge it and put a quaife LSD you'll be up to the task.. and even more.. and still less than the price of a MS3

ItsSlow basically covered all of the questions. Stock, in a straight line, it's not as fast as the competition such as WRX, SRT-4, MS3, etc. Stock, it will out handle in the twisties and autocross, all of those in the competition except for the Integra Type-R (the BMW 3 series is left out, it does well in the same autocross class, but is not the same type of car).

With the right mods (intake, exhaust, intake/exhaust manifold, boost controller, engine management) you can keep up with an MS3 because of the difference in weight. If you go with forged engine internals you can up the boost and beat out an MS3, EVO, STI, etc for a significant amount less.

Here is the thread for known MSP issues (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50549)

Sounds a little expensive to have to go and upgrde the internals

1. 170hp is at the crank. They're about 150-155hp at the wheelz. STOCK 0-60 is 6.4 seconds.
2. look for anything stupid the previous owner did. (for example: boost controller with no other mods).
3. blown sub, the clunk, hesitation, squeaky suspension... to name a few. mostly minor stuff
4. Not stock. srt4's walk us, ms3's too, WRX's see ya. you will be able to beat a tibby and a tC.

However, i can walk all over WRX's, speed3's, and srt's all day with about $2.5k put into the engine. Straight line, or twisties.

5. 2003 = black & orange. 2003.5 = silver :), titanium, yellow, blue.

my suggestion: if you plan on modding fairly heavily, then you will be extremely happy with an MSP. They are very light and very nimble, and i can't even imagine what this would do with upwards of 300+hp. That said, you would need to go pretty in-depth with the upgrades including a built engine etc.

It sounds like you want straight-line, raw speed. If so, you're looking at the wrong demographic. Imports are probably not going to be your answer. Look at a used z06 or camaro or something. Import-wise you're gonna need either a lot of work, or a new EVO MR/beefy WRX STi.

MSP's are fun as shit though, so if you're willing to put in a few grand (even if you have someone else do the work. Ahem *cough* Crossover/SpeedCircuit) you'll have a beast of a car.

If you want a straight line car there is no cheaper solution to speed than a 01 & up Mustang GT. By the time you spend the money on a Speed3 you could be running a very fast Mustang.

While Camaros are rally fast, they're expensive to mod, and buy. Vette is a whole new level.

Mustangs on the other hand are cheap, everyone has one, and there's a billion parts for them. I know a guy here running 11.88's with suspension, tires, and a 150 shot. No other mods.

Now if you want something light, that is agile and handles, is very responsive to mods, and looks good to boot, get a MSP.

No way in hell I could ever afford a vette. And buying a car and then having to go and do some major engine rebuild(hand) I dont think so. I will probubly just get a MS3, but thanks for all you opinions
