View Full Version : Petit Le Mans-Road Atlanta October 3-6

Mazdaspeed Motorsports is looking to have a major Mazda presence @ Road Atlanta for Petit Le Mans this year. Mazda is leading the in the Speed World Challenge Touring Car in the Manufacturers Championship and Jeff Altenburg and Randy Pobst are 1-2 in points.
If things remain the same, and they will, these will be firsts for Mazda. Mazdaspeed has offered to offset the cost of tickets for car owners and friends and family, here is my e mail to John Doonan of Mazdaspeed Motorsports
yes...we can help with tickets...Jim and I have worked some things out with the track so we have some involvement with the event...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John, I have posted on all of the Mazda sites that we are looking for a minimum of 50 Mazda owners for a Mazda Car Corral @ Road Atlanta. I have asked that those who will be definite attendees, only list there names on the various boards. Would you consider having a corral with a minimum of 50 cars? If that is ok with you, could Mazdaspeed Motorsports purchase the tickets for the owners of the vehicles and inquire about discount tickets for their family and friends? I do not think we need to have the added expense for a tent, as we can have people bring their own awnings (we have two of our own) and we can pool our resources and bring and prepare our own food as a group.
Let me know your thoughts on this and we can get the ball rolling.
Thanks,
Marlon
Please do not take this the wrong way, as it is not meant to be harsh in anyway. If you can commit to this event, please list your name, if you have any doubts, please refrain from adding your name to the list, as I need accurate numbers for Mazda.
Thanks for your cooperation.

what's teh ticket price for this?
Normally the tickets are $75-$85 for the weekend, Mazda may pay for the tickets for the car owner and get discount tickets for friends and family of the owner.

Scott Stilwell aka Velocifero is in, '03.5 stock sunlight silver MSP, wife is pending, but she drives a Mazda as well. Damn it would be awsome if I could have the 7 running by then, but not likely. I would like to be in the corral and parade laps if that is what this is entailing. I will most likely be there possibly Thursday after work, but def early and all day Friday, camping, and Saturday!

The Mazdaspeed Motorsports guys are at Road Atlanta today, to work out the details with the track and IMSA. As you can see the tickets are a non issue, and we'll have details on how we are going to distribute them to the membership.'
John and Jim are looking into the camping issue as well, to see what we can do about that. Here is the e mail response I received from John of Mazdaspeed Motorsports
We can discuss in the next few days...Jim and I have squared things away for tickets, but will need to check on if we have dedicated corral space...I will be at Road Atlanta tomorrow, so I will find out...stay tuned....
JD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John , I have 35 Mazda owners that are interested in attending, we’ll have the 50 for sure. What did you and Jim work out with Road Atlanta? I want to get the information to the membership, so we can have a great turnout for the event.
Thanks,
Marlon
So we are on track and should have everything resolved by the end of next week.

It is a Superticket good for the entire event. We will be holding the tickets at will call and you will be asked for ID. Also, if you are camping, you have pick that up on your own.
We will be having another conference call today, between 2:00-3:00 today to complete the remaing details. Mazda will have its own private Corral Area as well, it is not mandatory that you leave your car there as well.
We are finalizing the tickets for friends and family, I am trying to get them to pick up these as well, maybe 1 additional ticket per person.

Copied from the GA thread
We have everything worked out with IMSA and the track. As it stands now, Mazda is picking up the tickets for the owners only. If you have friends and family, they will have to purchase their own ticket.
We tried everything to get a discount, but they are in the business of making money and so is IMSA. We will have a dedicated space for Mazda owners. If you are attending, I need the final list by this Friday, as I have to submit by Saturday, September 22.
The tickets are the Super Ticket and you will have acesses to the paddock areas, etc. There will be a Mazda owners only access to the B-K, Tindol and Tri-Point Motorsports paddock areas. You will also have access to the drivers as well, Randy Pobst, Jeff Altenburg, Charles Espenlaub, Michael Galati and Jamie Bach.
None of this is mandatory, it is all voluntary participation.
Thanks for letting us know :) As far as friends and family, will they have access to the Mazda stuff too?
Oh yeah, I am trying to work on a few more things as well for the attendees, some Mazdaspeed swag and the like

Because Perro asked for a final list by Friday. Can you just help us out and put your name on the list. If the people that are still going to this are paying attention then they will see what is being done, that weeds out the people that just threw thier name on and might not show. Hence wasting tickets that somebody else could take advantage of.

Perro, I hope you don't mind, but I've cross-posted this to the MPV Forum (http://forum.mpvclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=18105). I doubt I'll get many takers on the short notice I gave them, but I'm hoping a substantial showing of enthusiastic MPV owners would show Mazda corporate that they should bring the 3rd gen. to the states!
Also, is it going to cost Mazda money/piss anybody off if people get on this list and then don't show up? My wife is thinking about coming, we'd each drive one of the Mazdas so she can leave if she or the baby get sick of it, and of course I'd like to put both of us on the list so we don't have to pay for tickets, but if she can't make it, I don't want that to weigh against Mazda's opinion of whether or not to do this next year.
Sorry 'bout all the dumb questions, but I'm trying not to ruin it for everyone.

Great job ladies and gentlemen, appreciate you al stepping up to support this event. I may need a favor from a couple of the ladies from GACC. My wife holds the Mazda flag for Charles Espenlaub, we may need a flag bearer for Michale Galati and one for Stan Wilson.
If anyone is interested, let me know. It is really a lot of fun, especially if your driver is in the top 10 on the grid. One last thing, we want Mazda owners, whether their cars are modded or not to represent Mazda. If you go to the NEPOC section of the forum, you can see how much fun we had @ Lime Rock with that group.
I know that you guys will show just as well as they did. My wife Lauri and I will see you on Wednesday, October 3! We are always easy to find, we'll be at the Tindol Paddock, where we help out with the team. We will leave you our cell numbers before we leave for the event,
Thanks,
Marlon

I figured, and I'm waiting.
I just can't wait to take Lucas on his first laps around Road Atlanta! :D
...I asked at the Mitty, and they said that even on the (relatively fast) touring laps, that it would be ok to bring a kid in a car seat along, so I figure it won't be prohibited for parade laps. I just want the kid to be able to say (once he can talk coherently) that he went to his first race at the age of one, and was on track at RA by 2 1/2!!

not sure, here is the last e mail I received
John,
1. Would you like your tickets mailed? If so where? As of this morning, I am now going to be at the track on Friday for a dealer event in Athens, so no need to mail them, I will pick them up from you
2. Haven’t had any response to the Mazda car corral yet, is this just for Miata owners or any Mazda model? A group from Cleveland is managing the corral with some cars even coming up from Florida…I have copied Marlon Sumlin on this message. He runs everything through us and we will handle all tickets, etc. for his group. Do you have a special parking pass that they will need to get into the corral…I believe you were going to print that up, but I could be mistaken.
3. Any word on the Pace Cars? Chuck ordered shipment of both the blue RX-8 and the red Mazdaspeed3. I have the light bars here and will ship them today to your attention so you can have them wired up. Feel free to logo them up, with a quick email approval from us if you would, please
4. Mazda hats? Chuck also ordered up the Mazda hats from our competition parts department…we can provide the 200 you requested
5. Pre Race Parade cars? Chuck also has this squared away with the Miata Club again…we are all set like last year
6. SCCA world challenge has a deal with VW, do you want your Mazda pace car out in front of it at all times or is this low on your radar? Yes, Jim Jordan and I discussed this and as official car of the weekend, we would like our pace car to be the main pace car and are happy to have other pace cars out in front of the field for the pace lap…but our cars would take over during full course cautions, etc.
The list has been submitted, if you guys know of anyone else who is interested, let me know, as I have a couple of extra sets for clients of mine.

as someone previously mentioned, the mazda corral is at the top of the hill, turn left and go over the bridge, then look for the huge american flag blowing in the breeze. it's on the left across from the vendor village, overlooking the front straight.

I had such a good time in the Mazda paddocks; it was like being in a toy store for me. I've never been able to get so close to an actual racercar and crawl underneath it to see everything. I even had a chance to talk with one of the techs about the transmission on one of the Tindols. Speaking of which, I'll gladly put one of their stickers on my car!!

Considering that the Corvettes were the only cars that ran GT1 the entire season, probably not. It was said that unless there would be a full season competitor for them in GT1 they would not race after 07.

From motorsport.com
New Team/Manufacturers for the 2008 Grid Three new independent customer teams representing three different auto manufacturers will race in the American Le Mans Series GT2 class next season. Bill Riley and Lou Gigliotti will introduce two Corvette C6's to next season's GT2 grid. The production-based Corvette will feature the standard Corvette C.6 engine which produces approximately 430 horsepower versus the 500-plus horsepower of its GT1 class Z06 engine counterpart. Joel Feinberg of Primetime Race Group will run a Dodge Viper factory- supported customer team with the intent of running multiple teams beginning at Sebring in 2008. The third new team is a Ford GT operated by Kevin Doran who intends to run the endurance races and provide cars to other top flight independent programs.
...still kind of unclear what that means for the Pratt and Miller Corvette team. It doesn't sound like they're dropping down, there's new teams coming in with 'vettes. I'd like to see that Maseratti make a real run at it, and I'd love to see the A-M team come back.
I guess I'm just saying it would be a shame to not have a GT1 class. I thought it was too bad there wasn't really one this year!

From 9/6
Corvette Racing's Future Depends on Aston Martin
Corvette Racing will confirm its continued participation in the American Le Mans Series--as soon as the Aston Martin Racing team does the same. GM road racing manager Steve Wesoloski even suggested that questions about Chevrolet's 2008 plans should be directed at Prodrive (which runs the Aston team) boss David Richards.
"As soon as they announce they are coming back, we'll announce that we'll be back," he said. "I think you should ask that question to David Richards and George Howard-Chappell [who also runs Aston racing]."
Wesloski and Corvette program manager Doug Fehan denied they are trying to goad their rival into returning, and they distanced themselves from a Corvette ad in the Mosport ALMS race program that clearly took a swipe at Aston. A picture of a Corvette passing a solitary team member, which just happened to be Howard-Chappell, bore the words: "Corvette: Turning participants into spectators." Wesoloski insisted that Chevrolet's Canadian subsidiary created the ad and had no understanding of the image's significance.
Should neither Aston nor any other meaningful opposition join the GT1 class next season, Corvette Racing will almost certainly end its long-time participation in the series. It has always insisted that it could only justify racing alone for one season only.
"The only thing I can say with any confidence is that we will be at the Le Mans 24 Hour next year," said Wesoloski. He also said that any operation built around Le Mans will not involve a full assault on the Le Mans Series in Europe, something that the team considered for this season.
In the longer term, Corvette is reviewing its options. It is evaluating a step down to GT2, while Pratt & Miller--which runs the team--appears interested in moving up to the new class for prototype coupes that is due to become Le Mans' top class in 2010.
Aston is also evaluating the future of prototypes. Any chance of it rejoining the ALMS appears to hinge on the series giving it some kind of performance break(s) akin to those it received the last time it competed in the ALMS, in 2006.

It sounds like something needs to be done to the rules for the GT1 class. If Corvette is running GT1 but a new factory Viper team is running in GT2, what else can really run in GT1? Maybe they should eliminate GT1, and add a Touring car class under GT2, just to make track traffic really ugly.

I guess, but my point is that nothing is entering GT1. They need to restructure the GT side of the ALMS, or it's going to become even more limited. I still think it's a great series, and Grand Am does fine with just DP and GT, but I kind of like the "4 races at once" thing that ALMS had going.

Do you even know the differences between GT1 and GT2?
From this post I would say you don't.
Just because a car is a "factory " car does not mean it should be in GT1. All Porsches in GT2 are "factory supported". In point of fact, the Penske Porsche Spyder RS are the first real factory team from Porsche in decades.
The Corvettes in GT1 were not "factory teams". They were built by Pratt & Miller, not GM/Chevy. Were they "factory supported"? Yes, but so are most teams at that level.

Do you even know the differences between GT1 and GT2?
From this post I would say you don't.
Essentially, the difference is how far your car is from being a production car. The GT1's are built for much more power than GT2.
The significance of my "factory" comment is that the difference between GT1 and GT2 is in some part money, and it seems like the Viper could compete with the Vette, especially with factory backing. It also seems like it would be worth it to them to do it, as you can always podium if you're one of only 3 cars running!
The fact that no one's willing to run in GT1 tells me something is wrong with the rules for GT1. It's too expensive to run in, or something.
evilmonkeyMSP
10-09-2007, 03:07 PM
the lack of GT1 competitors is just that...no one wants to just run against the corvettes (and lose as they will) so why not enter GT2 were there is much more competition...

You are still using the "factory backing" as the basis for running in GT1... that is ridiculous. By that logic the Mazdaspeed RX8s in GrandAm GT should be in GT1 and so should the Pratt & Miller G6.Rs or GTO.Rs...
By that same logic all the Penske Porsches should be in LMP1 not LMP2 or any of the Acuras...
Sure the higher classes cost more $$ but that does not mean because you have "factory backing" you should race there. Just because you can does not mean should.
It is more fiscally advantageous to run the Vipers in GT2 than in GT1. You fund more teams for longer, simple as that.
Foolish

Brian I think you're focusing too much on the "factory" part of my comment.
All I really meant was that it seemed like the Vipers could compete with the Vettes. Feel free to continue to pick apart my comments and make it clear that you think I'm an idiot, but I'm not sure what it gains either of us.
