MS6 or Volvo S60R??

Just wondering what you guys think about this. Both cars have turbocharged engines, both have awd, and both have 6 speeds. I have owned a mazdaspeed protege and loved it, but I also own a volvo 850 turbo and I also love that. To me money doesnt matter, I just want a car that will be around for a while. So I dont mind paying a little more for the better car. Its seems as though the volvo is better built and has an engine that is tried and true. But then again I love the look of the MS6. Help me decide!!

Can't really compare the TWo. The MS6 is more in the class of, Audi 2.0T/ Honda Accord EX-V6/ Altima SE-R/ BMW 325i/ Pontiac GTP/ Subaru Legacy 2.5GT.

And to tell you the truth, i think the MS6 is the better overall all around car, except the performance of the Legacy 2.5GT is about the same as the MS6.

Personally i wouldn't mind owning a Volvo S60R. Those are nice car's but out of the class of an MS6.

i own an ms6. the ms6 is going to have more responsive steering and more preferred cornering characteristics. on the other hand the s60r is a 5 cylinder turbo awd with alot of potential judging by the modified ones i have scene. i prefer the ms6 interior, especially the dash over the s60r's. the exterior of the s60 i hate to say it has a much more refined design approach and looks like an expensive vehicle and i love the rear quarter panels on the s60. even the factory wheels on the s60r are pretty sick. but thats all minor. if you are into modding, then you may want to see what performance options are out there for the s60r and pricing. if there are a sufficient amount of goodies and MONEY AINT A THANG, i myself would be in an s60r. it pushes the right buttons on me.

The only thing that'll make up your mind definitively is to test drive them both.

As an example, before I bought the MS6 I thought I'd be getting a Legacy GT Spec B. I drove 2 separate ones twice and it just wasn't upto the MS6 in acceleration (the Subie salesman even agreed).

The fact that the MS6 was about $6K Cdn lower made the decision easy for me.

I say since money is no object then it all depends on what the determining factor is?? Do you want a fast luxury car, S60R, or a fast semi luxury car that will handle better but be a bit bumpier, MS6?

If you want fast then nice, my suggestion would be to look into the new EVO's that will be out soo. You should be able to get into one for about the same price as a S60R and it will handle WAY better and be faster...not to mention they look better.

As a Speed 6 owner, and having seen the S60R, I'm sorry, but the Speed 6 is $10k cheaper for a reason folks. I have not driven one, but from looking at it, I see a nicer car PERIOD. Different class, so unfair to compare the two.

Granted from an enthusiast point of view, the Speed 6 is the way to go. The less refined and luxurious cars are always a better choice because they are affordable. Do you really need all that luxury if it's an enthusiast car? What sold me on my Speed 6 was the massive incentives.No way I'd have paid anywhere $28k for this car. If I was in a higher income class, and looking for a fast luxury sedan, I'd definitely take the S60R over the Speed 6. It shows it's superiority overall, as it should. :)

Any car can be reliable as long as you take care of it. I had a 94 Protege LX 5-speed and it lasted me until 2002 with about 175K on it. I only had to change the 2nd gear syncrhos on it because i modded the car and ripped it 2 7400rpms fuel cut-off most of the time in 2nd gear. I took care of that car washed it daily and changed oil about every 3500-4k miles. I let her go and got a 03 Silver MZ6.



So I would like to talk her out of the s60r but I dont know much about the reliablity of the engine in the MS6. Is the engine in the MS6 all-new, or is it the same 2.3l that they have used for a long time? Thats what it all comes down to.

It basically share's the same engine from the new Mazda 3's but the MS6 and MS3's come (DISI) Turbocharged with a 6-speed.

It's all preference man. If money wasn't an option to you. I would get the S60R, but if your more into imports. I'd say get the MS6 and do a couple modifications, it's fun tuning a car!!........................Good luck

If I'm going to jump into S60R price territory I'd probably be thinking something other than Volvo. As others mentioned if you put the difference into tuning the Mazda you end up with a car that blows the S60R out of the water. The only thing you can argue is that the S60R looks better, otherwise Mazda wins on value per dollar. But it is still a Mazda, and a Volvo is more of a status symbol thingy for sure.

I remember reading a Car And Driver article on the S60R and they wern't really impressed by how it drove. They did give it top marks for interior quality though. The blue guages are a really nice touch.

The best thing to do is go drive an MS6, only you can tell if the S60R or the MS6 is right for you.

If money was no object I would probably be driving the Volvo. Or an M5 for that matter :)

I had a Volvo XC70 (big boot wagon, light crossover), not the S60R.
I had to visit the service in almost every month for different kinds of "little things". (reflash, window settings, rattles, wheel alignment, bushings, upper engine mount etc.) I had a good service, but it was way too much.
The real problems started at 110.000 km, turbo, awd, climate, front and rear susp. etc.

And rattles. Everywhere. Body flex.
So, I loved the car, but it's not the same class as an Audi or BMW at all, but almost the same price.
My friend has a V70R, and has the same complaints.

I bought my MS6, and the quality seems to be higher (build quality not reputation) - though I have only 3.000 km in it.

I put my radar detector (hidden under the bumper) in the MS6, and have to say, it's much easier to work with.

I've choosen the MS6 because I wanted the get the best value for my money, and it gives more fun and joy than "money can buy".

Just my 2 cents. I hope I could help.

im a valet at a reputable hotel in los angeles and i can certainly say althought the s60R looks somewhat nice, there are some things that make it drive like shit.
The clutch is very touchy
There is no shift boot, its just a gay looking plate
Volvos are less sporty and more of a class so i you want something fast get a ms6.

Cpe downpipe , Cpe exhaust, Cpe cold air intake Hks Bov and spend $600 on a Tune to get my car as fast or close to my S60R that just had a chip and exhaust....
And believe it or not I still feel like the top end the R is faster even after all these mods..
At the end of the day for the money you can't go wrong with a ms6. The R is hawt rare but getting old.. the turnig radius is pure shit also on that car but i Loved it and I still miss it .

Well, I think folkes 'round these parts will tend to be a *smidge* biased :D

Keep in mind the S60R is being discontinued next year (i.e. no 2008 model). I believe there will be 2008 Speed6's (not too sure though), but the Speed3 will be around for another year.

So, parts availability could be an issue.

Just a quick note - I owned an S60, and now own the MS6GT. IMHO, the interior of the Swede cannot be matched. The exterior is strictly personal opinion (lately it seems every 6 I see coming down the road at me is in actuality a Toyota or something - they seem to look alike at a distance. And I am getting older...) but I never felt that way with the Volvo - it is very distinctive.
I personally like the way the MS6 drives better than the Volvo - I like the raw feeling and sound (several mods) and cannot get it to break loose on curves at all. I like to drive fast and like the sleeper look too. More Turbo steer in the Volvo as well as I remember.

Do yourself a favor and try to do it in one day, and test drive both the S60R and the MS6 so you can compare them back to back, and see how you feel.

The C30 is a T5, which is a 2.5 Liter, and Aftermaket makes pushing that over 250 5 Minutes of your time, it also suffers from no turbo lag, because of the dual scroll, but loses it's pep in the higher RPM's.

haha, yeah, there is far more aftermarket available for the MS6. You can buy engine internals, turbo upgrades and easily tune an MS6. Volvos are a pain in the ass. I like my car but could have built something similar in the Mazda for far less $$$.

As far as looks, I think they both look great. The people that have said otherwise are full of shit and probably say that about any material possession that they do not own.


Oh Zigger, there is now a volvo S60R in sweden that trumps mine pretty easily. He has my turbo and in addition a paxton supercharger. Also Boosted is about done with his too. Mine will be the only one that can really be driven easily on the street with big numbers though.

A bad driver doesn't burn out his clutch ;) or "blow" his stock turbo....... only an idiot who can't drive does that. Next time try letting your car sit for a minute before you shut it off, maybe your turbo won't go poof.


and the RSX wasn't stock, I'm not THAT deaf, I know what a stock RSX sounds like, oh and the Axis wheels on the car do not weigh 24 lbs.....i found online they're actually 18....... I told danny I'll do a rematch, and kept asking him that night......and you had left.... but he kept saying no, I think because he knows if I didn't miss a gear then he wouldn't have won. and from a dig AWD would leave that car far behind (cheers2)

plus and I missed 3rd....... like how you miss so many gears in all your races........ shall we back track and I'll point out your posts?

1st if you were a bit smart you will know 2 thing, 1st what does a driver has to do wit the turbo failing? are you kidding me please!!!! look all the people here who have the same issue as me! god dam you are stupid! 2nd my clucth died because i race my car a lot why? because i like it and i can afford it! something you will not know how it feels like! OHHH btw i have a turbo timmer so my cars always idles for some time after i turn off the car!


second! that rsx all that it had was a CAI! plus danis girl as a pasenger makes the gains of the CAI even to stock power! i know that a a stock speed 6 will kill that car including yours! but men you might be shumacher or something but everytime i am around you SUCK! and i have miss maybe more gears thatn you! but thats cuz out 20 races i come and say i missed this gear! but you race 2 times and both of them missed a gear! and you also went to check the weight on the wheels!!! JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA POWEND got beet by a rsx and went home to reserch the wheels and saw they were lighter, then you said DAMMMM no wonder those are light weight wheels! And i tried telling you not to get the gt35 cuz its to big, i know this because my gt3076 its to big! the trotle plate closes as soon as i reach full boost! so with the g35 you will be lagging more! if you want to go all out performance and boost 26 + psi the go ahead, but its not the time yet! need more engine controls! but no you started saying that i Dont wat you to get the gt35 because i dont want to be slower than you! I am looking foward to beet you again on december when you said your car will be faster than mine!

I checked the weight of the wheels cause I knew munch and danny were bullshitting me about them being 24 lbs. I know about Axis wheels, you don't have to "research" anything you can just go to the website of a wheel company.

I haven't seen anyone who's blown their turbo......maybe the engine cause the connecting rods are weak, but not the turbo. I've had more than 2 races.... I didn't miss a gear racing Karma when he was in your car, and I didn't miss a gear racing danny in his protege.......and I didn't miss a gear racing Munch the 2nd time, when my car actually got him off the launch....

a turbo failing has plenty to do with the driver...... like how the driver over revs into deep 7000 rpms, severely messing up his motor and turbo.... and not letting the turbo cool down enough...... I'm glad you have a turbo timer, you didn't have it the FIRST TIME i got in your car when I met you...... good job idiot. I'll be waiting to hear about your engine blowing, cause you're too stupid to get forged internals..... I already told you I'm waiting for CP-Es stand alone unit, which WILL allow me to run a gt35r, you're just an idiot. If I was just getting a nice luxury car with a bit of sport appeal to it, I would get the s60r over the MS6, because it's more of a luxury car.

But since I'm more into performance I'd rather stick with the MS6 and the little bit of luxury it offers.
