I know Zoeb at Subydude.com from my Subaru Legacy past life and continued participation on a Legacy forum.

I want to buy some Rota P1 wheels 18 x 8.0 with the 67.1 exact hub size that fits Mazdas perfectly. You don't have to rely on stud-centric mounting loads/stresses. These will be hub-centric wheels just like OEM wheels.

Well, he only had one set in stock in Gold color. Not my cup of tea. So Zoeb offered to place an order for some 67.1 hub size P1 wheels if I could get a total of three (3) Mazda3 guys willing to commit.

GB Price: only $750 bucks FREE SHIPPING!

$200 deposit required for Subydude to place order for 20 wheels in Hyper Black.

Here's a shot from www.subydude.com website

Here's the P1 wheel in HyperBlack....the color that I want bad!

Now come on guys!!! There's got to be at least two (2) more guys wanting to get some hot lookin aftermarket wheels 18 x 8.0 +48mm offset

Quote from Subydude website: our lightest 18 x 8 so far weighting in @ 19.2 lbs

Come on! I really need some "partners" here to make it happen.

Look at it this way, if for some unfrickenbelievable reason you don't like them, you can most surely sell them for the same $750 bucks.

think about it, 18 x 8 wheels at nearly forged weight of just over 19 lbs.

Do ALL the colors he is ordering have to be Hyper Black?

Yes. He said that to place an order directly with Rota for any particular wheel/color, he has to do a min. buy of 20 pcs. (5 cars worth).

So in this case, all he's asking for is 3 firm buyers (deposits paid) and he's willing to put 2 sets into his inventory.

I certainly believe you dude, they look sweet too. I'm just not feeling the dark color on a dark car. I was still searching for hyper black wheels on a black car that has a better view of what it looks like. Maybe on silver or white car those HBs will look sick on, even red...just not black IMO.

NO DICE. Neon's have either a 4 x 100 bolt or a 5 x 100 bolt pattern.

I'm sure he can buy some Rota wheels that fit his FasT3r car though!

Lots of "lookie-loos" so far it sounds like.

The situation is like this. Subydude has been supplying Rota wheels to the Subaru community for years now and has a fabulous reputation as a reputable vendor. Obviously the name of the company speaks for itself.

Recently, Subydude has expanded its vision beyond just Subarus and started marketing directly to Nissan and other brands. Now Mazdas are a target.

As for the question about what Rota wheels fit Mazdas, that's a very good question. And I am no expert so take what I say here with a big grain of salt.

I do know that our Mazda3 / MS3 comes with a 67.1mm hub diameter. Not all aftermarket wheels will fit our larger hub diameter.

Now Rota does sell certain style wheels with a 67.1mm hub diameter like these P1's. That means they will fit perfectly like OEM wheels.

Lots of aftermarket wheels - including many Rotas - use a "universal hub size" meaning its large enough to fit on any car. These kinds of wheels rely on the wheel bolts for "stud-centric" mounting. You may have seen wheels where the five stud holes are bull-nosed or rounded and the stock lugs dont work. You have to get matching rounded lugs to mount them. That because the rounded features in the wheel and the lubs forces the wheel to be centered - or centric.

If you get a wheel like these P1's that are made with the same 67.1 mm hub diameter, then its self-centers on the hub just like OEM wheels do. This takes some of the load / stress off of the lugs. A good idea if you take your car to the track a lot like I do and really push the limits of adhesion.

I mean you don't want this happening to you do you.............(just kiddin, the guy must have forgotten to put his lugs back on I guess)

neox.286
08-19-2007, 06:16 PM
yea, that is true

Ill probably get flamed for this...but honestly, a 10 pound total difference between the two (total) cant be that much different can it?

(thats more of a question actually...)

though honestly I think that the 17's would look better than the 18's would

drledford93
08-19-2007, 06:26 PM
Here's the physics of unsprung weight as I understand it...

For every 1lb of weight reduction (wheels, tires, lower suspension members, etc.), that is equivalent to 7lbs of total weight reduction of the car.

So, if you reduce the wheel weight by 8lbs, then:

8*7 = 56lbs per wheel * 4 = 224lbs of effective car weight you lost!

Pretty significant...(wow)

Daniel

ZooZoom
08-19-2007, 08:22 PM
well, these P1's will reduce each corner by five lbs of "deadweight" from the stockers while adding up to 1.25" of contact patch (245's) for better traction.

not a bad move at all! (glare)

Why would he only be able to order 5 sets of the same color wheel? They're all the same model wheel, I can't see why a different color would be an issue to order for someone who would be paying for them. Its not like that one color would be sitting in his stock and not selling. That sounds stupid to me that he couldn't order like 4 hyper black sets and 1 set of a different color... I'd give this some serious consideration if you could order a different color but from what you say we can only get hyper black because thats what you want.

reasonable assumption. and large mfg's usually don't like to deal with a bunch of "mix & match" orders that are easily screwed up. can you imagine the logistics of doing this for countless distributors worldwide? (bang)

Powder coating is bad for alloy wheels. The powder coating process makes the wheels weaker so you're more likely to damage the wheels on bumps than if you left them the color they are. It's probably pretty safe to say that the lighter the wheel the weaker the powder coating will make it.

I think someone mentioned in another thread that there was a lower temp cooking process that's safer for wheels but not every place does it.

Good news......bad news

Just spoke with Zoeb at Subydude.com. If we keep this approach of getting a minimum of three people to order (same wheel/same color), then Subydude will place an order directly from Rota factory.....overseas. He said a typical "custom" order takes about 3 months for production and delivery by slow boat.

Now before everybody.....including me.....scatters for the wind, Zoeb came up with an alternative approach that allows anyone to order most any color (what they have in stock). You see, they stock plenty of Rota wheels for Subarus. And Subies have a 56mm hub size. That's too small for the Mazda 67mm hub.

Zoeb has access to a machine shop that will bore out the center hub to a perfect Mazda 67.1mm diameter making them hub-centric wheels just like OEMs. And he can do this with wheels sitting in inventory right now! Here's the kicker however......like everything in life.....nothing is free. The cost for getting them bored out is $25/wheel or an extra $100 bucks on the wheel set order.

Personally, I'm going for it! I most definitely do want these Rota P1's in Hyper Black So I will be placing my order today. Zoeb ensured me that the final product is identical to what you get when they are customer ordered a particular hub size. He said, in fact, they all start out with a smaller hub diameter and get machined out to order size.

I hope this doesn't disappoint anyone too much. And please don't flame me for it unless you feel compelled to do so. I'm just another Mazda-holic that wants to ZoomZoom up his Speed3.

Another point that I wanted to clarify (an earlier mistake on my part), is that lots of Rotas do come in the "universal" hub size of 74mm. Most aftermarket wheels do actually. These are made to work in a hub-centric fashion using hub centering rings. Zoeb said anyone ordering other styles of Rota wheels that are universal can get a set of 67.1mm hub centering rings for FREE!!!

So there it is. You can get a set of 18 x 8 +48mm 67.1mm hub P1 wheels custom-made immediately for the price of $850 with FREE SHIPPING!

I am canceling this GB. Or at least removing myself from it. Zoeb said if there's still 3 people that want a certain Rota wheel style/color (has to be the same) and can tolerate the estimated 3 month wait, then he can still do it for $750 with FREE Shipping.

Cheers!

^^^ Tru dat... good point, I forgot about that making the wheel weaker part... I heard that somewhere before too; but is that really fact? Or myth? That is what I don't want to happen, so I'll check more into it when I get home.

I'll just have to look into this.... That only accounts for the hub, and not the bolt pattern as well. dang.. lol

Well; pull me off of the GB altogether then. I'll continue to shop around.

J -

not sure what you mean by the "bolt pattern" being off. Its not.

Subaru STI's (05 on) use the same 5 x 114 pattern as the MS3.

Yes, other Subies use the 5 x 100 pattern. But that won't fit no matter how much machining you do.

So it really comes down to deciding if getting Rota P1's - any color in Subydude's inventory - with a perfect OEM fitment 67.1mm hub dia is worth $850 bucks (free shipping)

Not too many other wheel options that are cheaper than that. Not if you want 18 x 8.0 wheels that weigh 19 lbs!

-K

ZooZoom
08-20-2007, 03:22 PM
Just so everyone understands the "deal" here, if you want a particular Rota wheel that has a non-universal hub size - not just the P1's - and you're willing to shell out another $25/wheel then you can get it custom machined to Mazda 67.1mm hub (OEM like).

To Clarify: Lots of Rota wheels - like the vast majority of aftermarket wheels - come with an oversized "universal" hub diameter of 74 or 76mm. These wheels must use hub-centering rings to align the wheel with the hub. Subydude will supply them FREE of charge for any other style of Rota wheel that is of a universal hub size. Check with Zoab. Only a few select Rota wheel models like these P1's come with a specific hub size (non-universal).
