I wanted to look at my brake drums today to see if I need to change them but when I took the drums off their is two phillips head screws that I have to take out but when I try to take it off my screwdriver keeps slipping off what would be the best way to take this screw off.
Around what mileage does your back brakes need replacing?

force is the only thing going to get them out. get a good screwdriver and press that bitch in there and twist. thats how mine came out. just make sure your e brake isnt on, so the drum cover can slide off.

there's a fancy dancy tool called an impact driver that you can use as well. Looks like a short, fat electric screw driver. Only...it isnt electric. You hammer the back of it and the impact forces the bit into rotation. Works wonders.

Where would I get a tool like that?
I have been trying to get the thing off but i'm worried I will damage the head.
yea imbact tool definetly a great help on taking apart the drums.
Although i have 100,280 miles on my car and last time at 90,000 miles, my mechanic said that my rear drum brakes are in great shape and look like they have never been used.....so with that said (deppending on driving hbbits) drum brakes at least on Proteges last a long time.

I may have to try that sears tool or go to a workshop, and let them tell me if I need brakes and at least they will loosen the bolt:).
