View Full Version : Question re: misfire/EGR (cause you haven't heard it enough)

Hi all
The wife dropped off her 02 Protege LX for an oil change at the local quick lube, and when she went to leave, the car wouldn't start. It eventually did, and she got the flashing CEL. It had been on solid for a while, I didn't worry about it because "knew" it was the 02 sensor (turned out to be right). It was bogging down bigtime, and the revs were jumping all over the place. Going uphill had no power. Took it down the street to Autozone, and they showed the misfire code (P0300 or similar).
I bought plugs and the O2 sensor, but they didn't have wires or coils for this car. I ordered them.
In the meantime I replaced the plugs and sensor, to no avail.

When I went to pick up my order they had cancelled my wires and only shipped one of the coil packs. Oh yeah, I had read some threads on here where someone described my exact symptoms and it turned out to be the EGR, so I ordered that, too.

I replaced the one coil, and swapped it into both spots, but it didn't help. Then I replaced the EGR valve, and so far, in my quick half-mile test drive, it seemed fine. So here's the question: if there is still a misfire, does the CEL flash immediately, or after a certain amount of time? How about the O2 sensor code? Basically, how long until I know I really fixed the problem? It was very noticeable before the EGR valve replacement, but I am skeptical by nature.

Thanks for any answers and for the fine forum.
