TWM Performance

Hi Guys,
TWM is pleased to announce that we have recently completed final testing of the MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm), and are now taking pre-orders. We have started our first production run, and we will be able to ship out all pre-orders on August 30th, 2007.
The specs for the short shifter are as follows:
-30% throw reduction
-1.75” shift knob height reduction
-Compatible with stock shift knob or Upgrade to a TWM Weighted Shift Knob (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/)
-Available with optional aluminum shifter base bushings
-Very simple installation, no modification of stock parts required
-Retains reverse lock
http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/images/speed3-shifter.gif
We have designed the MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm) with a reduced shift knob height, as well as a re-positioned pivot point for optimal shift feel and throw reduction. This is a true short shifter which reduces both shift knob height and angular throw, not just a “chopped off” version of the stock shifter. The short shifter is fully CNC machined from billet steel and is a complete replacement for the stock shifter shaft. The shifter also features a lifetime warranty as is the case with all of our products. The installation is very straight forward and does not require any modification of stock components. Simply remove the stock shifter and replace with the TWM short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm), typical installation time is approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
The short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm) retails for $224.95 without shifter base bushings, or $244.90 with shifter base bushings.
The optional shifter base bushings provide a more solid contact point between the shift assembly and lower mounting point to remove unwanted flex from the shift assembly. These bushings retail for $24.95 plus shipping when purchased alone, however they can be added for only $19.95 when purchased together with the short shifter.
Here is a picture of the short shifter installed with the stock shift knob, our weighted stainless steel shift knobs are also all compatible with the short shifter:

And it is available for pre-order here: Mazda Speed 3 Short Shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm)
Please contact us at sales@twmperformance.com for any questions you may have, or if you prefer to place your order by phone please call us toll free at 1-877-655-0540.
Thank you,

We have a customer in Australia lined up to test the shifter in his RHD MazdaSpeed 3 as soon as the production run is complete so I'll know more at the end of August. For the time being if you have a RHD I would hold off ordering until we can confirm fitment. I have seen the RHD shift assembly and it is identical right down to the part number, however I would prefer to give you a definite yes or no when I have confirmation from our Australian test car.
Contact me toward the end of August or beginning of September and I will be able to confirm if it fits OK.
Thanks,
Kevin

Why is this one so much more expensive then the one for the speed6 ???
I just PM'd you Abaddon, but this is a question we're getting quite a bit so I'll go ahead and post basically what I sent you:
The MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm) is more expensive than other short shifters we manufacture because of it's complexity, mainly due to the reverse lock since it is a 6 speed.
For example, the MazdaSpeed 6 short shifter consists simply of an adapter plate and the top portion of the shaft, and the regular Mazda 3 short shifter consists of a pivot ball, shaft and laser cut plate. The MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter consists of the entire shifter mechanism comprised of the main pivot ball and side arm, main body of the reverse lock cylinder, several machined delrin bushings, the reverse lock spring, reverse lock guide pin, laser cut and CNC bent plate, and the upper shaft which slides in and out of the main body of the reverse lock cylinder.
The complexity of the short shifter and additional moving parts are the factors which contribute to the additional cost. Most short shifters we manufacture are relatively simple machined shafts, pivot balls, and laser cut plates but the Speed 3 short shifter has a great deal more CNC machining time involved due to the reverse lock.
I hope this answers you questions, please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Kevin

I would suggest self installation for the MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm), unless you're really not comfortable with working on your car or don't have screwdrivers and a ratchet and socket set. Also, doing the install with an assistant helps. Even if it's someone who is not too handy, there is one step where it helps to have someone who can pull up on the shifter while the other relieves the tension on the spring which controls side to side movement.
Overall the install is very straight forward, it's always a treat to work on Mazdas. This install is no more difficult than the install for our regular Mazda 3 short shifter, in fact the procedure is virtually identical. I plan to have the manual done by mid next week and I'll have a link posted from the short shifter page on our website.
As for the shift knob, it's always a matter of personal preference but here's a pic of each shift knob you mentioned installed to give you a better idea of what they look like:

Unfortunately not, our current production run is for the MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm) with the 1.75" inch height reduction. I really like the lower height, it isn't as extreme as our regular Mazda 3 short shifter at a 2.5" inch height reduction, but I find at a 1.75" reduction it looks good and feels great.

No offense, but the focus shifters have reverse lock outs as well and are about 100 dollars cheaper, and made of thicker metal to boot. I'll have to check someones out when they buy one around here, but thats not what I was expecting.

The main body of the Ford Focus short shifters are generally made out of aluminum which is much cheaper to machine. There are also a lot of Focuses on the road so the cost of development is spread across the expected number of shifters the company expects to sell, and the product has been on the market for quite some time now. The MazdaSpeed 3 on the other hand is relatively rare when compared to other cars so the potential market is much smaller, leading to development costs being spread across fewer parts.
Many of the Focus short shifters are made overseas in China and India, however all of TWM's materials are purchased in the US and machined in Canada leading to a higher cost to manufacture. We feel that keeping production in North America is important not only for the local economy, but it also ensures very tight quality control and fast turn around. Quality is our top priority, and we're proud to be one of the few remaining aftermarket companies who still manufacture in North America.
I hope this clarifies a little why the MazdaSpeed 3 short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm) is more expensive than shifters for some other vehicles on the market.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi ZooMIN3,
The short shifter should work in the 2008 models no problem. Our testing has been done with the 2007's but Mazda generally keeps shifter assemblies for several years without change. For example, the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, and Protege shifters all work in every year.
Thanks,

Can someone please explain to me why this product is one hundred dollars more than the MS6 stage II short shifter. What a bummer... If this product would have been the same amount considering its the same engine I would have picked this up in a heart beat. I thought this would be a decent inexpensive item that I have been waiting to pick up. I could buy a CAI for this amount and atleast put some hp and tq to the wheels...

I'll install it tomorrow sometime since I don't have any White lithium based grease readily handy....
If you haven't gotten your STS yet, be sure to have these tools handy...

-Philips Screw Driver
-1 small and 1 large flate head screw driver
-8mm and 10 mm socket
-Ratchet with extension
-Needle nose pliers or needle nose vice grips
-T-20 Torx screwdriver bit
-White Lithium based grease (recommended)
-extra set of hands (another person for you smart asses!) lol

Yeah bro, when I placed my order, I got a receipt in my email inbox. On that receipt it showed "Decal Color: None" I was like, huh? I didn't see that option when ordering.
So I sent a reply back to TWM Performance and asked for a bronze or red one. Brenda, one of the cool peeps there replied saying that they didn't have them in bronze and sent me the red ones I requested. Cool yo! (burnout)

Thanks for the props and the pics, glad to see you like the short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm) :) We decided to include the paperclips just in case people did not have any handy, they certainly make the install easier.
