In the MSP, there's supposed to be a lock preventing you from shifting from 5th to Reverse, isn't there? I was trying to do a 5th to 4th shift recently, and I felt gears grind as I entered the reverse gate. Thinking I screwed up and released the clutch too early, I stopped at the next red light and, sure enough, I could shift from 5th to Reverse no problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Or should I take the car into the dealership and have them look at it when I do my 60K mile checkup?

It is a very small little part that can be fixed easily enough once you are inside the trans. Getting inside the trans is another story - do able, but it takes some time. There is a very good how to from Turfburn (that he and I perfected on our cars). Otherwise, I would just be careful about the shifting and live with it until you have a reason to go into the transmission (it would be a really big labor charge for a very small part).

mine is also slightly broken, sometimes i can go from 5th into reverse by accident, luckily i always catch it and pop it back out again b4 it grinds too badly

We had that on ctt1982's tranny. As long as it doesnt float around and fuck something you should be okay.

at a stoplight i think you should be able to shift between them...it's just when the car is moving forward isn't it?

If I recall correctly, I wasn't able to shift from 5 to R when stopped when I got the car.

correct. you shouldnt be able to do it at all. even when the car is off it shouldnt go from 5th to r

I just had the reverse lockout plate fixed on my MSP. When it's working properly, if you pull the shifter straight down out of 5th, it should slide towards 4th gear instead of reverse. To get from 5th to reverse, you should have to move the shifter more or less into the center neutral position between 3rd and 4th before you can move it back to the right and down into reverse.

There's a subtlety... all the lockout plate does is prevent you from going directly from 5-R, by pulling the shifter straight back. It doesn't change depending on whether you are moving or stopped.

there is a lockout that you have to "go around" when at a stop to get to reverse I believe. I can feel it in mine.

It helps if you let the clutch out a little bit. I don't know why. But now that I think of it, my car hasn't required I do that lately.
