guess I'm the newest member of the club. Apparently the leakdown test I had done today did not turn out too well. Seems to point to a cracked #1 piston. piston rings are shot. Also somethings up with #3 valves.
Don't know what I'm gunna do...All I know is that I am NOT gettin a new car. I'm keepin my baby.
So the question now becomes if I should go forged, rebuilt with forged rods/pistons, or find a replacement stock FS engine and get an ems and my intercooler pipes finally made.

Go Forged don't look back! If/When you get the money. Sorry to hear about this bro.

I wanna go forged, but that takes $$$. I can only afford the price of the engine(PG has one for 3600) Havent check street unit yhough.
I got "a guy" that can do the swap for 600.
After spending that, I wont have the extra grand or so for an EMS
Not to mention the transmissions already on its last leg.

okay, so before i give numbers. let me get it straight, your car failed the compression test, however your not missing any rods, yet you still want to buy a complete other motor to either build or just throw in. correct?

I haven't decided what I going to do yet.
I do know that for now I want to be able to run at least 9-12psi daily without having to worry.
So now I'm thinking just doing a rebuild, getting an ems, and getting my custom IC pipes built.
Now the question is should I replace with forged pistons and/or rods?
No matter what I do, the tranny is going to go out soon and I'm going to have to spend more $$$ to get that fixed
Thanks

I've been going back and forth about getting the forged pistons and rods, but from what I hear and the people I've talked to if your gonna run ANYTHING over 9psi you wanna be safe than sorry...forged is the way to go.

I think the point Speed_Racer was trying to make was that you have a good block since you didnt throw a rod through it. You will spend half as much just rebuilding the engine you have to go forged than you would buying another engine....

Yeah, I think i've settled on the rebuild since I'm pretty sure the block is ok. the temp has always remained constant, and no sign of burning coolant. I just hope the cyl walls are ok, hopefully just a honing will fix any damage.
PG offers the forged rod and piston kit for 1250, I think that's what I might do.
Any other suggestions and advice are always welcome!
Thanks guys

honestly you dont have as many options as you think.
If you rebuild, go forged or go home . . . with rod knock. If you don't, just get another engine (used short block) and throw it in. unless you plan on doing it yourself rebuilding with stock parts really isnt a viable option.

^x2.
Cheaper than the third engine.

Ok. I think i've decided to rebuild with forged rods and pistons and use the money I saved from not buying a built engine to get an ems.
I was already pretty sure that if I rebuilt that I would at least do forged rods, but I'm also gunna do the pistons now.
So does everyone think thats the best route to go?

If your block is intact and you can deal w/ the downtime of the car, yes.

Sorry to hear man, my baby is in the garage under the covers waiting to be taken in to fix, i thru a rod tho, nice big hole in the block, i'm doing the forged built motor, alot of dinero's but it will so be worth it, if my block was in tact i would just do the rod and piston combo, i wish you good luck my friend, hope everything turns out the way you want.

Tear Down The Motor..
If the block is intact, get it machined for forged pistons and rods, then get it assembled.
If it's the block, buy a new used block and do the same..

Don't know, for now it's still driveable and I need it to get to and from work. First I need to find some way to get to work, but at this point I can't think of a way. Second I've first got to find someone to do the work for a decent price and do a good job. There's not alot of people or shops in Memphis that I trust to change my oil, much less rebuild my motor.
I'm gunna start researching the parts this weekend and ordering them if possible. I'm looking at the forged rod and kit that protegegarage offers for $1250. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about it?

ur lucky you can still drive it, but even when i blew my ES's motor, i just bent a rod, i didn't drive it at all, would've cause more damage

yeah I hate having to drive it. But I have to get to work. I don't drive it for anything but that. I also figure the damage has been done, I'm pretty sure this happened a while ago. It's just gotten significantly worse the last week. I just don't know how I'm gunna get it done. I don't want to rent a car b/c that's gunna get expensive

I think that's the best price out there right now. Arias and Pauter plus free shipping you are good to go. I have sent you a PM with some other info as well.

dont buy anything yet. you need to tear down and see whats needed before you buy somthing just to return it. you might need a bore. if so you would need slightly oversized pistins. no? or how about crank walk? or if your still driving on the thing how do you know your not scoring the crank??
I know you keep saying valves but what if its just a badly scored cylinder wall? you also need to find out what size bearings too. bottom line is your going to be out a car for at least a week. maby time for a huffy(lol2)

iracemine - you are of course correct, I was thinking of all that today, but it upset me so I decided that the crank and walls are ok.

Man I wish I had the skills to teardown and rebuild the engine myself. The price of the labor is what's gunna kill me
GoProtege
08-05-2007, 01:17 PM
Ok. I'm starting to lean to the swap over the rebuild. I figure with the cost of the rods and pistons + gaskets + bearings + head(if necessary) + hacing to get the block bored(if necessary) will probably cost around 2100 at best. Add on the extra labor for the actual rebuild, it's still going to be less than the swap, but I figure at lot more can go wrong with the rebuild.

Damn. Going through PG pricing everything. Grand total is $5594!!!!!
Main things Probably forgetting something:
Forged engine
Microtech EMS
ACT clutch
Timing belt(It's about time anyways)
gasket set(Do I really need this?)
The only problem is that as soon as I get this in, the tranny is going to fall to pieces. It's already on it's last leg
