ok, I changed my tranny fluid this weekend (02 p5, auto, 100k+) Just used the regular Dexron III. Everything went fine, (brown, not rancid, no metal flakes) it was easier than changing the oil, but the problem is the fluid level.
(nervous)here's my problem; gotta check the fluid with the engine on, aftermarket intake is in the way, can't run the motor with the intake off. I put a little less than 4 quarts in, the level at cold was perfect, but on the way home from work yesterday she was spitting it out. I checked the drain plug to make sure it was tight, which is was, so I traced the leak and it was coming out of of the dip stick hole.
what (if any) problems can occur from having too much AT fluid?
Thanks for the input.

Yes, having too much fluid or too much fluid keeps the tranny from shifting properly. If you have too little, the tranny will have problems keeping cool, more issue of locking up gears, and shifting cause of not enough fluid. As for too much, it will make it hard for the tranny to shift, but there is more fluid than it's looking for. This could put stress on the tranny. The best idea is to disconnect part of the intake that is not connected to the engine. If short ram, just reposition. Just make sure the MAF is still connected. It ok if your really careful not to get stuff in the MAF. Also your not driving with the filter off, so it should be ok to do this. I too have a CAI and understand what you mean. You do have to meter fluid when it's running. I hope that helps.

You can run the engine with half the intake off if you need to and if the area is clean.
The Tube from the Throttle and the Mass air must be attached, but you can take off everything from the Mass air to the filter...

Alot of 1960s era sports cars (Ferraris, Porsches) didn't even have air filters and they were street driven. Running the car in the garage without the air filter is no big deal.
