Hi, I have a 1995 Protege, and starting just recently, whenever I turn on the A/C, I hear a whooshing noise and then the engine stalls to a shutdown. Anyone have an idea what to do?? Thanks.

Have you been able to run the car AT ALL with the A/C on? If it kills the engine every time you turn it on, I'd say you have a compressor issue (siezing or other malfunction). It's odd, because that normally causes the belt to slip and squeal, but perhaps it could kill the engine if you're at idle.

with his weak little 1.5 I would not be suprised if it did kill the engine.
As for the problem I'd say it's definitly a seized compressor. How often do you use the a/c?
