View Full Version : Weird Problem - ABS Light, Brake Light, No Go

Hi All,

I just got back from a short drive and something weird happened. I stop at a red light and then my radio turns off and back on again (like if there was a short or something). I then noticed my ABS light was on and that my dash light seemed a bit low. While I was getting on the highway, I tested my brakes to see if my ABS would kick in... maybe I didn't brake hard enough, but they didn't kick in.

The next time I stopped, I noticed my Brake light came on. So continue driving and a minute or two later both lights are gone. I get home and turn off the engine, remove the key, wait a few seconds and try to start but nothing's happening. All lights are on and there's no crank (not even a tick). When I closed my windows I noticed they were closing a lot slower than usual.

I had a maintenance done on my car just two months ago and they didn't report anything wrong with my brake pads.

Could it be that my battery is dying? I bought it last summer, it's a red top optima. I can't do anything tonight since it's dark out and I can't see anything.

Anyone had these symptoms before?

Cheers,

Volt

i was reading some things about an abs light earlier this week.
i dont have your exact issue, my abs light goes on when i hit 90mph, bad sensor seems to be it,,,,,,,
but in regards to your issue, i had read something that sounded similar that envolved someones battery grounding out because it wasnt strapped down well enough causing the abs light.

bit of a long shot and given the other electrical issues and its easy to check, its worth a look if you havent already.
also check the main fuses.

I checked the brake fluid, it seems fine. My battery is tied down well, no slack (I modified the original bracket to add extra rails to hold the optima battery).

I tried using a car booster pack, this time it cranked a few turns until I got the ticking sound. Looks like my booster pack isn't worth much except inflating tires. (notcool)

Could it be that my alternator is broken and not keeping my battery charged? If so, what's the deal with the ABS and Brake lights?

This sucks...

The battery voltage with engine off was at 10.19 Volt. Unfortunately, I was unable to take reading at idle since the battery pack only resulted in the click/ticking sound. I know this battery pack works because it once helped me on a very cold winter night.

I borrowed a battery charger from my buddy, it says it's good for car, truck, marine, RV, deep cycle, farm equipment, etc. batteries. So I hope it'll be ok to use it on my Red Top Optima. I'll trickle charge it tonight...

If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to call CAA and tow my car to a shop form them to look at... yay. (argh)

I managed to start/boost my car today... at idle speed, I had 11.5v and falling... so I guess it is safe to assume alternator is dead.
