Well, to make a long story short, someone broke the ignition key lock cylinder(i think that is what it is called; the part where you put the key in) for my wife's 98 Mazda Protege. I called the dealer and I don't know if they really knew what they were talking about but the quoted for a price of over $400 dollars, just for a peice of metal and 2 keys. What I need to know is what the real name of this part is and if I can find it online somewhere. What is broken is just the metal piece where the key goes in, all the wires and other stuff is fine. Thanks for your help.

Call the parts and service division of your local Mazda dealership, and ask them to fax you the parts schematic(s) for the ignition. Make sure you specifiy the details on your protege beforehand (year, trim, trans. etc.).
Determine what parts within the schematic you'll need, and have them order those part numbers. Have them give you a call when they're in, and pick them up. Refer to your Haynes shop manual if you need installation help-- those can generally be had at any pep-boys or autozone. Try pep-boys first.

Hey, I know this is a few days after the fact, but I just had the same problem on my wifes 2000 focus. Yes the part is called the ignition cylinder, and yes $400.00 is alot for it, although I have seen quotes an high as $800! Installation is fairly straightforward provided you can turn the key to unlock the cylinder, if not you may have to drill it out, dont worry its not as bad as it seems. One thing to make note of would be the steering column lock, this should not be a problem provided that you remove ONLY the busted cylinder and nothing else from the column. This is a fairly common problem on early model focuses, so a google search for the issue with them should provided enough info to get you through it. Good Luck, message me if have any questions!
Cheers
