Sleeper626, thank you. They are BBS wheels from an 80's vintage RX-7 Convertible. We have owned it since May or June 1992.

Yep the Ford probe has the Mazda mx-6 motor in it be it v-6 or the 4 cyl model. Only noticeable differences were the trans mission in the probes were geared a little faster and the suspension was a lot more race inspired from the gate as the mx-6 was more of a luxury setup. As it was to replace the mustang which never happened unfortunately it had to have some go.

93-97 Probe GT = 93-97 Mazda mx-6 L.S. (auto and standard parts are compatible)

93-97 Probe 4 Cylinder = 93-97 Mazda MX-6 R.S. auto and standard are sharing the exact same parts as well.

They were all made in the exact same plant (Ford Plant) I think if you own a 93 Mazda mx-6 it might be from japan. Very sad to see these cars discontinued in 97. Even though there are a fair bit around they have become very cheap for people in school and people who shouldn't own cars to get. Sadly I see lots of them that are just driven as beaters. :( Breaks my heart.

sorry for the rant (boom06)

i have a 93 it was made at auto alliance :p but then again mine seems to be the only LS that came in cloth interior, as far as i've seen. i agree about them being discontinued in 97, i had some hope that they'd make the mazda6 in a coupe :(

My 93 LS has a cloth interior and was made in the US. Despite the stiffer suspension setup and larger wheels and tires, the MX-6 LS was actually faster on an autocross course the the Probe GT. At least all of the SCCA G stock championships were won by the MX-6 and not the Probe.

yes !!! im not the only one !! :D i'll have the chance to see which one is more superior since someone with a probe GT is coming out to one of our autoXes.
IMO though, i like the body lines of the probe more, it looks sportier. id take a probeX6, probe front, MX-6 rear ;)

Alphanumeric,
If you are running stock, one thing to remember is those bigger wheels and tires are heavier and take more power to turn. How much I haven't a clue. Also the 225/50-15 or 225/45 -15 tires will fit on the stock size rims. :)

Asuna

There are a very saught after set of wheels for the second generation mx-6's. Those being the FD's. Light in weight and OEM on a RX-7.

:D

Yes. The BBS wheels on my car are from an earlier RX-7. The reason I wanted to use to them is that they were the same size and offset as the OEM wheels, therefor legal for stock class, but much lighter.

thanx for the advice :p !! i've got a set of stocks for autox sitting around in my garage. i've got 205/50/15 falken rt-615s since when i got them i didnt know that i could go up to 225s and stay legal for street tire class :p i can definitely feel the difference between the 15's (running shoes) and 17's (casuals). when the tires wear out, im looking into a set of rota slipstreams (which ill never run on the street) or FD's. i've heard that FD's need spacers though, is that right ?

didnt do as well as i'd expect, i kept swinging the rear out and couldn't get used to the car's quicker accelleration (had some fuel system work done a few days before) hopefully i can learn how to handle the extra quickness by next event on aug 25 :p

I don't have a mx6 but i want to buy one, my question is which one is faster??

88-92 mx6 GT --> 2400lbs 2.2 4cyl turbo engine 145hp/190tq

92-97 mx6 LS --> 2600lbs 2.5 V6 engine 160hp/160tq

On my opinion the old one wins from take off

Suggestions please! thx!

for outright speed, i'd take the 1st gen, but for looks and decent speed, i'd go with a 2nd gen. mine's not that fast in a straight line, and maybe with a better driver could be faster around corners but it's a fun enough drive for me--VRIS FTW !!! :D

Asuna

Not fast, Pretty reliable but at a certain age they need a bit of money put into them.

Think of a Mazda 626, Your speeds are about the same ;) As it is the exact same car chassis and drive terrain.

Not a huge aftermarket for these cars either. Either you go big or go home.

do they come with struts/shocks already ? from what i understand about coil-overs is that they replace the shock/strut and spring.

It's bone stock for now, the jeep is my real love. Figured I'll work on it after college, but so far its been a good car. Everything works (except the motor antenna), get anwhere bewteen 30 and 40 mpg. First on the list when I can aford it is a paint job and new exhaust. After that is a new suspension and probably bore out the engine a bit.

Yes, thats the Mazdaspeed kit, sides and front. The license plate things were made for a show the car was recently at and this photo is one of the ones I took when it arrived home after the show. They are simply 1/4" ABS plastic cut outs with a vinyl graphic of the original emblem and Mazdaspeed logo on them. Quite simple to make.

Lol look closer I totaled it a while ago. The D side fender is a different shade of white the bottom of the bumper oppening is torn (from a log) the fog lights were knocked out and broken(since replaced) it has some parking lot rash that really pissed me off and about a million little rust specs comming through the cheap respray.

But yeah it will definitely be a sleeper when I get it turbo'd.

Yes, they are indeed different, IIRC Kitty was Vintage Red as Asuna stated, Carmen is called Passion Rose Mica. However, what inspired her name was the name of a pigment:

Carmine:

A pigment of a bright red color obtained from carminic acid, and is used as a general term for a particularly deep red color.

do you have any dimensions on the clearance requirements for the upgraded brakes ? it looks great, i just want to know if it will clear 15s since i run the stocks at autocross and i'm looking into lightwieght replacement 15's when these tires die (smaller rotating mass FTW)

Hmm...Hawk Doesn't have fitment for the '99+ 626...wonder if ones from a Protege would fit, any thoughts?

If not it may be worth it to have the slightly larger rotors, not for autocross, I've got MORE than enough braking for autocross, but for track days it could be nice to have more material in the rotor.

Mazdaspeed Protege brakes besides slightly different calipers are the same as these.
You can buy parts for either but the MS brakes tend to be priced higher.

At the moment I'm using stock 15" ls wheels up front and 16" probe wheels in the rear. The fronts are pretty close but they will fit fine.

The undesirable handling characteristics would offset any such gain...

If anything you'd want a larger, wider tire in front for the drive wheels, which is not an uncommon practice for FWD...

For the sake of being able to rotate tires as needed I would choose equal sizes, and tune the suspention as necessary.

Ryan

Why the different sizes??

2 of my LS wheels were bent last winter and one of those was actualy cracked.

I bought some nice probe GT wheels cheap. After a mazda meet in Des moines I arrived home with an inch long piece of saw blade in one tire.

So untill I can afford new tires all around I rock these. It dose give a verry slight rake to it and no one even notices the mismatch unless I point it out lol.

Yeah I would consider trying wider wheels up front if I ever buy aftermarket wheels but I see some people "streaching" under and over sized tires trying to augment handling to some extent and i just dont think it's wise.

Just after I had to swap the wheels I took an offramp a little to fast and just about flew off the road. The fronts have brand new tires and the rears are almost bald so I have major over steer.

Inspector 24

Yeah, until you start getting crazy (like autocrossing in DSP, Street Mod DP or any other equally nutty class) same size tires are the way to go.

i haven't dynoed it since i got it, but from my butt-dyno, it feels more torquey and doesn't sound like a lawn mower. i've heard people complain that it's a 2.25" but i didn't want to go too big for my exhaust

Inspector 24
12-13-2007, 04:36 PM
The MX6 came with the KLDE in the US, and the KLZE in Australia and Japan.

While the KLDE makes 35 less hp, they make the same torque.

Slow? Not hardly. At sea level multiple people have posted very low 15's and even high 14's with no more than bolt ons. FWIW at 4500ft elevation I've run 15.9 @87mph many times, and on my current car ~ 15.5 @87. Now figure that we loose .7-.9 due to elevation, and it's definitely not a slow car.

Well thats a good point! btw the black one vs the mustang gt on the videos i posted is the KLDE and he won, there's a quote i dont undertand, how come the probe gt has the same engine but the probe is pretty slow. what ya recommend for the exhaust for better performance? thx

Whats the stock exhaust size 2''? i think if its a v6 you can go up to 2.5'' the bigger your pipes are the more back-pressure you lose (less torque)

Asuna
12-14-2007, 11:12 AM
Lets not turn this wonderful thread into a , "OMG it beat a mustang and they are slow cars"

They are what they are. A Mazda 626 with a hot body. A car that in 93 was way ahead of its time and still gets called a 2000 something to date by onlookers that dont know better. Its a car that died out in 97. Sadly it was never really replaced with any other model.

The KLDE and KLZE are silky smooth engines. they are very reliable in many aspects and a truly well built ingenious engine to say the least.

with that said lets not forget about the capabilities of the fsde and the not commonly mentioned fsze, both are the 4 cylinder engines. Like the famous klze the fsze is the japan/Aussie version and yes has more power, due to a better intake manifold and other odds and ends.

as for the "automagic/automatic" If you plan on being liek the majority of the population and not going an extra mile in maintaining you transmission stay away from it. I rebuilt mine without removing it from the car simply dropping it down a bit by undoing some motor mounts and cross members. After the rebuild I have flushed it once a year, and put 40 000km on it since the rebuild. I'm not hard on it and actually have been known to baby it. That does not mean I dont get on it once in a while. My exhaust always begs to be opened up ;)

Inspector 24
12-14-2007, 10:35 PM
Probes are around 200lbs heavier than a given MX6 of the same trim level/model year. Not to mention in stock form have a heavier, taller wheel/tire combination, albeit shorter final drive to compensate for the taller tire/wheel combo.

Aside of that, why do you make the generalization that all Probes are slow??

For exhaust, "Ebay" hotshot knock off headers, stock cat (or highflow, whatever) 2.5" free breathing exhaust using a good muffler, and a resonator in the stock location behind the cat so it doesn't sound like ass.

lost control on a wet curve and hit a gutter with the front end, and pretty much ripped the whole thing appart. The chasis took a big hit, and between that and the 3rd engine, second tranny, 4th turbo and 3rd engine head, I called it quits. I raced that sonbitch hard at bithlo (orlando SW)

That car was pure beastiality though, we never got to see its full potential because, everytime we launched it at the track, it would break an axle. And when we reinforced the axles, it blew the tranny:lol: whiplash anybody?

Thats a good looking time. And some good looking numbers. I wish had the numbers of my car. Last turbo I put in was a Garrett t3/t4, I was pushing 12psi before blow out. I dunno, for some reason it always broke down, no matter what you did to it lol. Hence my nickname, alwaysbroken.

2.5" tubing, manderel bends if you have the $$ and/or resources, use some sort of free flow resonator of muffler in place of the stock unit, and another free-flow muffler at the rear. Done :)

Stock cat is ok, headers are great too :)

Here's something what a good exhaust system should sound like:

Couple of questions...why ditch the straight neck for a curve neck? Why supercharger instead of turbo, you will make more power on the same boost level with a turbocharger...

Third...Rims...Meh, sell them and get something better....unless you go with a gooood black, then they'll look good :)

Agreed, however the KL is not a motor built for low end torque, regardless of intake manifold, source of boost, or when you hit the spray on the nitrous, the nature of the short stroke KL, head design and cams are going to give you a motor that makes power and torque above 4k rpm, and not a whole lot below. In the end, I think you'll find that whatever you do, you'll have peak torque around 4500rpm and peak hp around 6000 rpm +/- 300rpm.

Is it any reason why all you guys have the LS instead of the RS 4cyl? I want to buy a mx6 but the 4cyl one, why? well since it has the better MPG than most of the mazdas i can afford and cuz of its look.

Of course that i'm going to do some basic bolts on and hand work to make it look nice and shiny! :D

Is the RS "fast enough" to beat some of those ricer hondas that we all see on the streets?

Any suggestions or opinions will be appreciated! (thumb)

generally, LS's are more prized because there's a better aftermarket support for them. I do believe that the FS motors that came with the RS's are not compatible with a lot of protege parts. I've never driven an RS but from the impression i get from most people at MX6 land, it's not too fast in a straight line. With a little suspension work, im sure u can outhandle many hondas out there.

I think the only reason the LS is so prized is do tot he fact you can do the ZE swap.

and of coarse you can do a FSZE swap but they are pretty rare, I think I know of 2-3.. . . (encourage)

the LS has very ample and smooth power, its described as an ingenious design and way ahead of its time in the car and driver mag i have from 93.

Thx for the replies, the problem of the RS is that it only has 118 hp when it weights +2600, while a stock 1.6 miata has the same HP and weights only 2250 pounds. Not mentioning its ability to raise revs like crazy cuz' of its gearbox and differential (braindead

Front lip is a UK spec Renault Laguna (around 1994), only cost me like 15 pounds and is an almost perfect fit... Over hangs either side by about 5mm.

I do have a proper Mazdaspeed front lip in the closet, just needs painting and fitting when I do the rest of the car.

I've also got another set of Mazdaspeed side skirts for the jspec, and these will also be painted and fitted when I get another Mazdaspeed front lip to go with it.

Is that true or not? Then if it is, what about if i get a mx3? Cheap on gas and i can find it on good deals

Help!!

They're wonderful cars, have been incredibly reliable and will continue to do so. They key as with ANY used car is you must get a good one. A shitty honda will be no better than a shitty MX6, and yes, chances are it may have been raced, although not as likely compared to buying a Civic with Altezzas and a fart can.

The most important thing you can do in buying any new car is have it examined by a shop you know and trust. :)

If you find an MX6 that's been maintained, had regular service ect ect it will provide as reliable transportation as anything of comparable year and mileage.

As a bonus, it will be a lot more enjoyable to drive :D

Interesting place to post such a question...in a picture thread ;)

But what the hell, I'll entertain your question. With a DX, and those mods and pretty much every other one in the books you'll be happy to get 170hp from the engine.

If you want a car to go fast on the cheap, pass on the DX and find yourself a GT. Starts you out with a turbo, and your dollar spent will return you four times the horsepower.

:lol:You still have the tape

Looking good!! What brand/size wheels? What tires did you go with?

Ryan

lol thanks !!! the tape has been on there so long that i bet it's a different color under :p

they're rota p45fs 17x7.5 i stayed with my same street tires ze-512s in 215/45/17 i'm thinking about gettin azenis for the street too though maybe in 225s

i like these better than the motegis since they're a tad lighter and wider, it feels a little more planted.

also, +1 on getting a 1g GT. they are AWESOME, IMO, they have more potential for sheer speed than the 2gs. piers, your car gives me soo much hope :D.

pighunter: is that a stock interior ???? (nice license plate BTW)

:) No, not quite. I had some spare money from a car accident. Used it the right way, to get rid of these once-been-blue interior. Middle is sand colored alcantara with brown leather sides. One in a while I do some more parts. Next ones may be dashboard.

Parts of it. I stripped the seats. Sewing was done by a professional according to the old seat fabrics. Then I put it back on (and installed also the pneumatic shape changing modules off a Ford Probe). Also did some foam modifications to get a more comfortable fit.

Luckily, these seat fabrics are not glued to the foam. Only fixed with clamps, about 90 per seat(boom08)

Stupid question: does a 626 count as an MX-6?

that's pretty cheap for interior and it looks awesome

ohschnapps: the only main difference is in the number of doors they have. i call mine a 626 sometimes

2001 Mazda 626 2.0L ES. Bone stock, except for the tints (5% back windows only, stupid NJ laws), and brighter headlights (not HID, but bright still pretty nice, maybe ill take a pic at night). You can see the headlights in one of the photos above.

Ohschnapps--looking nice I'm loving the tan interior. Its much cooler in the summer imo especially out here in vegas. I like how the fans oscillate I think they're the only cars that came with that

QFT means "quoted for truth."

And thank you. Yes, the tan leather has yet to burn me, though i think black would have been better looking (and a better match for the paint color). But hey, i bought it used but in great condition, so i can't complain.

it looks like the previous owner either barely drove it or loved it like a daughter. either way it looks REALLY clean. how many miles on her ?

I used to have the oscillating vents on my 89 mx6 GT, they fucking rocked, and knocked everyone on their ass when I showed my friends

OhSchnapps

I bought it at 65,060mi and it's now at 78,656mi. The previous owner was a 50-60 year old woman, who drove it as such. She also couldn't park it in the garage for crap, and both side view mirrors have scrapes because of it (you can see one in the pictures). Luckily, her husband took care of the maintainence, and did an immaculate job of keeping up with oil changes and services (it had new front tires when i bought it too, so that was great).

The husband owned a turbo Beetle, and he passed away because of a heart attack, so she decided to keep the Beetle and sell the 626, and so i got it at a great price (i think it was only 6,000 before taxes).

The downsides:

1) The car was sitting in the garage for extended periods of time. She only used it if she needed the extra trunk space, which was maybe once or twice in the year or two after her husband died. I changed the oil as soon as i got it home and insured, and had someone check the car for leaks and such, so it was fine.

2) She probably never took the car over 50 mph (or 3000 rpm lol). Therefore, fourth gear didn't get much exercise, and first gear seems to be worn out; it kind of kicks out of first into second (this started recently). Oh yeah, and it's automatic. :(

3) The engine has rust (or corrosion?) on various parts, i took pictures and will post them in a separate thread, i need help on whether it needs to be treated or not, and how i could remove some of it safely.

D) Well, there is no D. Everything else owns. :D Sounds beautiful (angry almost, not whiny like a civic), handles tight, especially for a four door sedan, looks great in black, leather is comfy, steering wheel stitches have held up perfectly, everything works, and the stock (premium possibly?) sound system has the bump i like.
