So my mechanic installed the J&S, and everything was fine, until he plugged in the gauge wire.

After a bit the unit would get hot near the plug, and start barely smoking. I have no idea what could be wrong.:(

this car has been such a pain in the ass!

I'm thinking about selling it for a big loss just to move on to something newer and leaving it stock.

I'll take $16,000. Well over $20,000 invested.

you never get back what you invest when you sell a modified car...

John at J&S said it's most likely the gauge or gauge wire that have a short. The thing getting hot is the resistor to send voltage to the gauge.

He's sending me a new gauge and wire and I'm sending him the old one's back.

Why don't you sell the J&S for a loss then?

Unit is fine.

I'm just gonna get it running good with the mods I have and be done with it. Start on a new project. Prolly an older Nissan Z with a swap of some sort.
