deleted the last resinator on my lunch break

it is perfect i shoud have deleted all 3 at once, i deleted 2 and it was louder and more agressive, now its much better it has a louder low deep rumble at idle and really gets loud when i get on it, at the same time its not intrusive on the highway or when idleing, but it does idle louder and deeper now. it really sounds great! so now im running straight 2 1/2 pipe total cost 120 bucks

Does that mess up the mandrel bend in the pipe?

I am worried it will look all jiffy rigged and shitty then ruin the mandrel bent system.

yeah you just remove the reisnators and weld in 2 12/2 in pipe, the way ripleys in houston does it doenst have any break in the weld its straigh thru, and i need to get a sound clip i have my cell phone vidoe feature i'll post one tommorw

the thing by the tail pipe , it looks more like a muffler , its just a straight thru resinator, i noticed the most difference when i removed the one that i just removed which is the one next to the cat in the back, if i could go back i would just have removed all 3 at once , you wont regret it, ill post a sound clip tommorow , it perfect its not loud at all at highway speeds but when you floor it especially in lower gears it roars, and it doen'st touch the manderal bends

first off i dont know if it has 2 cats and 3 resonators or not....thats why i asked, then the feedback I got states what i thought...that theres only 2 cats and 1 resonator. I still dont know for sure, i could tell you easily if i had an ms3 but i dont. It certainly seems pretty wierd to me though that a 4 cyliner car would have 2 catalytic converters, 3 resonators, and a muffler....i mean all i can picture is a bunch of parts all in a row with barely any room for piping in between. I dont have a picture but I can tell you that there is only a main muffler and a resonnator near the tip. The only convertor is in the down pipe off the turbo.

soooo im sure there is going to be a dispute on this one...but its hard for me to believe that theres that many resonators and cats because it really seems excessive....if you have 2 cats then you generally only need one resonator and a muffler to keep a 4 banger exhaust pretty quiet...and the thread i posted in the above post is coming from a guy who sells mazda parts for a dealer so i dunno what to tell you guys...

bagman is a reputable source and im inclined to believe him if he says theres 1 cat, 1 muffler, and 1 resonator...and honestly thats what i would expect to see on an exhaust.

I know the corksport DP replaces just one of the cats and that you will be able to get a test pipe from protege garage pretty soon to replace the second cat. That info came from Ken at Protege Garage. No idea how many resonators there are. When I get home I'll try to get a camera under the car and post up the pictures.

see thats all i was asking someone to do, i said before that i honestly dont know...it just seemed like a lot of resonators and cats and i really didnt think that there was no muffler. I really just want to clarify...and i send another post to bagman1 just to double check what he is saying and that i want to know whats there from the turbo all the way back.

As for the group of 3 owners Im not trying to knock anyone but thats kinda the vibe I get too when I post in their section...Its a territorial thing I guess. They think I dont know anything about their car because I dont own it myself, but all in all Im interested in lots of cars and especially mazdas. Im thinking the guys at the muffler shop are not going to remove all the CATs on his car,It is not legal to do so.If they did do something like that Im sure they would let the owner know they just removed all of the CAts on his car and his cel light should come on within minutes.They will remove resonators and mufflers without a problem.
Im betting that he is right about our car having 3 resonators because he has no reason to lie about that.Im at work so Im not going to go look under my car but I think I will have time tomorrow to do so.

The one thing I noticed was a muffler that GSR kept telling me was non-existant....i dont think he gets that the muffler doesnt have to be mounted right at the back bumper and can be located further back. But there is an up close and personal shot of it in koshs gallery.

I dont know what it is but mufflers can go straight thru also.Im not sure why mazda would use 2 different typs of resonators,Thats not very cost effective.If I had to place a bet I would say its a muffler.

CT, yeah that first resonator looks like a cat, but if you look at the post where i stole the pic from you can see the second cat right infront of that resonator. The pic is of the cat-back. The first cat is stuffed into the downpipe and the second cat is on the mid pipe. Its amazing how many bulges are in the exhaust. But that last thingamajig looks like a muffler, honestly i dont think it really matters, it could be a straight thru muffler but if you can see through it clearly then i would call it a resonator. But lets not get caught up on little words.

Moral of the story no cats were deleted in he making of this exhaust.

lol the ms3 has a muffler. its connected to the tip of the exhaust. a regular 3 has a tip bends a bit then the muffler.
but to honestly tell you all, i have removed the 2nd cat and all the resonators. the sound you get is it basically sounds like a wrx or sti with an exhaust system but that is more when your on the gas other than it pretty much sounds normal when you use your gears to hold you back on hills o what not. for me i wanted a louder sound and i like the sound of wrx and sti's so i removed the resonators to see if it would bring it out and it did, But for me i think it was a bad move cuz every now and then i lose power at 6k rpms. but that is once in a great while but when it does seriously i feel a big lack of power.

i coudn't upload my cell vid on here but i posted it on youtube its alot louder and deeper in person, but it still pretty loud on the phone, just go to youtube and type in mazdaspeed3 without resinators, it just me starting the car. let me know what you think

It sounds like its broken or maybe its just since you did it on a cell phone. But it sure doesnt sound smooth like the CPE vids we have seen.

Seems to me it would have more of an SRT-4 sound if you pulled the resonators out... SRT-4 has a great sounding exhaust from the factory.

by phone doens not pic up the base or all of the sound its louder in person, yet it still really nonintrusive in the canbin especially on the highway, it positvaly roars when i floor it, im flooring it all the time to get that angry roar , its addicting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea its not that hard and if the last one is a resonator then a lot of people are buying resonators and putting it on their cars. in fact there is a lot of false advertising since they say its a muffler when plainly its a resonator cuz you can see straight through it. For example a cherry bomb exhaust is actually a cherry bomb resonator

How can you assume they cause backpressure and give you more power by taking them out? Air isn't blocked by these things, it changes the way sound waves travel through. Cats cause backpressure because they are packed with material that the air has to travel through.

no man there is alot of backpressure, if you look in the resinator the air it cuaght up in the chamber increasing backpressur

I was just commenting on the way the exhaust sounded in the clip. I know all about cell phone recorded audio and compressing stuff to go on the web.

i must say i think mazda ran out of money for the ms3 then cuz the last resonator is so a thin piece of crap they could only afford to put 2 solid resonators on, which brings to my attention that must be why sadly but thankfully no one got hurt in their ms3, that the ms3 has had their motor drop almost to the ground on the driver side due to not enough funds to put in a good bolt for that one mount.

mdl247 i love my car, it was a specialty car developed by mazdaspeed of amercica. they developed and came up with the idea for this whole car mazdaspeed3 alexa, mps it was there idea . was all some guys at mazdaspeed of america , so give them some credit, yeah theres one or two imperfections but they did a good job

WOW so much damn stupidity over a muffler and a resonator.............
First off resonator and a muffler do the same thing...... they both make the exhaust a little more quiet. A resonator does this with less backpressure than a standard typical "muffler".
Yes they make mufflers that have a straight through design and others that are baffled (flowmaster for example). Typically a car has one resonator and one muffler, the resonator helps kill the sound effect more than anything(droning the cabin), mufflers take it a bit further and slows things down a bit to help make it quiet.
Now i'm pretty sure there's a thread around here that shows NO PERFORMANCE GAIN from removing the exhaust. if thats true then replacing the resonaotors with striaght pipe did nothing but make the car MORE AUDIABLE........meaning LOUDER!!.

IMO the car has 2 resonators , 2 cats and 1 (ONE) Mufflers that is of straight through design.
This is one of those the glas is half full VS half empty... Either way, the only thing you changed was the sound, thats it. If there was any performance increase, YOUR BUTT CERTAINLY DIDN'T FEEL IT. exhaust changes are usually miniscule in performance unles a full tuned exhaust was installed and tuning was done to compensate.
For me a DP and a cat delete wpould be worht the money to change out, but anything else is a waste, UNLESSS you want more sound.

You have pictures of what was taken out? Mine are staying in and I don't have any other way to see what you are talking about.

Don't mufflers have resonators and resonator chambers in them? And you can have just a standalone resonator without being in a muffler?

Plus the welds in those straight pipes that replace the resonator or muffler in there aren't as smooth as normal exhaust pipe on the inside. That in itself would cause more turbulance in the airflow. Not that it is terrible or even noticable but don't claim performance gains if is isn't quantitative.

I just had the muffler thing on the end and the resonator that is right behind that removed today.They both go straight thru and have those honey comb chambers in them,I dont know what it is packed with.The guy at the shop and I cant figure out why they didnt just use a resonator at the back instead of that straight thru muffler thing.We think it must just be for the sound change.
I do like the sound much better with just those 2 removed and it dont really cost much to do it.I had them put stainless steel in there so that was a bit extra but still it was only $110 with tax.I dont think there will be much if any gain in performance but the sound is better.
