can anyone tell me whether there is any problem if u shift into neutral on an auto trans while at high speed?.,.,,i thought this will have less stress on the engine while going down on a hill or speeding and let in on neutral so it will go on momentum :D .,.,.,.,does it make the transmission hot?,.,.,.,.i know it is kind of stupid,.,.,.

i would think it would damage something, but i have never owned a automatic to really know what the jerk feels like

there isn't a jerk as I recall, it's just shifts into neutral and back into drive

You have to blip the throttle to bring up the revs to ease out the "jerky" feeling.

BTW I used to manually shift an auto on a 94 civic. It's toast.

as long as u don't rev it up it should be fine
but anything like a neutral drop is really bad i had a 79 dodge with a slant 6 in it and auto and the olny way it would spin tires was to rev it up in
neutral and slam it into low gear well i did that one night showing off and it cracked the casing and destoried the cluches so be kind to you tranny

thanks 4 the response guys,.,.,.,.i thought it would distrupt the 50;50 ratio.,.,u know like keep both the engine and transmission from speeding more one than the other,.,.,..,.so today onwards i wont switch to "N" :D

thats prolly a good idea...no offense but anytime i ever saw someone doing that i thought of how stupid it was...for some reason people think they are saving tremendous amounts of gas by doing this and think they are helping the trans...but in reality they arent saving enough gas to make it worthwhile and they are wearing the trans and torque converter down with the unneccesary shifting....plus its just really gay...i mean if you want to shift yourself while driving just buy a manual car!

so people with manual never drop out of gear into neutral if they no their fixing to come to a stop or a turn ahead if there at 60+ MPH.

^^ on our cars, with a manual transmission, at 0% throttle position the fuel injectors are cut off. Going into neutral down a long hill will:
1. consume MORE fuel
2. eliminate engine braking (so you gotta use the brakes a hell of alot more)
3. put you in an unsafe situation because if you need to make an evasive maneuver you have to put the car back in gear first. <-- this is also why it is ILLEGAL to coast down hills (state law but it's like that in most states)

if i am approaching a turn or coming to a stop i downshift so i don't have to use my brakes as much.. i would never just dump the stupid thing into neutral and drift to a stop (with or without brakes).. what if I had to swerve around somethin anyway?? then i'm out of gear!!

plus, doesn't it sound so much better downshifting to a stop?? (thumb)

actually in some states it is, i think the law started because of guys in 18 wheelers or big trucks were coasting and then losing control of their rigs...thats why you see signs at the top of big hills sometimes that say to stay in gear while going down the hill.

yes, it is illegal to coast in neutral, and yes it is dangerous because of having to suddenly move, and yes it is bad for you drivetrain, so all in all, don't do it

Yea there's honestly no point in coasting in neutral to a stop? Either downshift, or brake. I downshift myself, and I always hear folks say its hard on your engine. I have 90,000 miles on my engine, purchased my car brand new and have had no problems?

how is coasting in N hard on the engine. its just like sitting still in N

He's talking about downshifting.. people say it's hard on the engine.. if anything, it's hard on your clutch if you don't know what the hell you're doing. It's not hard on the ignition system, not hard on the fuel system.. the engine is just sittin there pumping air in and out, sounds relaxing to me :P

Oh.... a quick ?. Does the protege trans have a thing where it locks you out a certain gear if ur going too fast for that gear??? My dad 80 something truck does it but i dont think many newer cars do.

coasting in N isn't hard on the engine, you're right.. it's when you're already moving XX MPH and have to put the car back in gear that hurts..
