Trunk Release

Has anyone tried to use their trunk release leaver right by the driver seat, and nothing happens? The other day I went to the airport to get my dad and used the leaver to open the trunk, it worked. When I got home the leaver went up but the trunk didn't open. Anyone ever have this happen? I really don't want to take apart my whole car to find out its a simple fix.

There's a small lever on the side of the trunk latch that disables the driver's release. You may have tripped it when you pulled something out of the trunk. Try flipping it up or down.

So I took my car to the Mazda dealer because I couldn't find this leaver. When I got there they had three people look at it and told me they have never seen this type of set up on a Protege. So I'm wondering if any if you have seen this set up. The piece circled in the second picture moves, but doesn't hit the piece in the third picture. One more thing the Mazda dealer said the trunk release line is suppose to go through the trunk well in the forth picture my trunk release line is right above the red line.

I have an '03, but mine is very similar. The lever on the side of the latch in picture three should snap down, so that the lever in picture two pushes it to the left when you pull the driver release. This is what pops the latch open. Also, the release line is in the correct spot. Mine runs in the exact same area of the trunk well.

First off I must say that the people at the dealership are morons. This setup is on every protege. You have the lever circled in picture three, when it is in the downward position the trunk release leaver by the driver seat should work. If it's up or halfway it won't. I hope this helps.

Oh yea mines was like that. you have to bend the peice on the bumper back to were it touches i beleive is what i did.
