View Full Version : update to my overboosting issue...

Okay, so first off I replaced my turbo with a brand new (factory) turbo. Same thing still overboosting. Second, I don't know if I have ever really experienced the turkey...because now I get this almost "flutter" noise that sounds a little like a turkey...and it makes a noise when I turn the car off. Also sounds faintly like paper hitting a fan. The car runs and boosts perfectly (with the exception of the overboosting). So I am stumped. Is this flutter/turkey ok? and why is my problem still there?

still stock wastegate? you try blowing into the vacume line leading to the wastegate to see if its still good? do you have any from of boost controller ?

sounds like a bad wastegate

No boost controller. With the original turbo I replaced the WGA. Still had the problem. Now, new turbo w/ new actuator...still there. Vacuum reads normal. boost seems smooth.

Bad wastegate? What are the odds? A brand new turbo. Well, how much and where could I buy the internal wastegate for our turbos?

our turbos are externally wastegated
take a look at teh ATP wastegate, *************.com sells them

they sell a direct replacement for our turbo and yes it definetly sounds like a bad wastegate

Is that "flutter" noise normal? Like a faint turkey combined with paper hitting a fan (just not as dramatic).

But guys this would be a forth ATP WGA...seriously on 2 turbos...1 in which was brand new.

hey you realize that a WGA and a WG are two totally different parts right? one is the wastegate and one is the actuator for the wastegate...you are throwing money and new parts at your car and you dont even know whats wrong with it...i wish i had that luxury. Dude seriously take it to someone who knows what they are doing...
and if the reason you havent taken it to mechanic yet is because you think he will rip you off then think about how much youve ripped yourself already by just throwin some super expensive parts at it...Its obvious you dont know what youre doing so have a professional look at it...theres no shame it getting it done right.

Are you sure you ordered/received the correct part, the actuator may look similar but boost completely different.

I know there is the WGA and the internal wastegate, 2 different parts.

Have you replaced the vacuum line that feeds the WGA? A leak in that would have the same effect as a bad WGA.

AND NO! OVERBOOSTING IS NOT A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THESE CARS, SO I DONT KNOW WHERE YOU HEARD THAT SHIT
From all the posts I've seen with people complaining about overboosting and the fact that I've personally had the wastegate seize on me. It seems to be a common problem, which will become progressively more obvious as the cars get older.
Not taking sides, just clarifying.

It's pretty easy to move it manually, Go give it a tug and see if it's stuck.

I gotcha....what i mean is that yeah wastegates/wga tends to be a problem...he is saying that his wg/wga are fine and that overboosting is common...i was just sayin that overboosting in other situations(since he says his wg is fine) is not a common problem...i guess i couldve been more specific...

All the lines are replaced and checked. I guess I will try the internal wastegate. Seems odd that two turbos would have the same problem.

how many threads are you going to start on this?!?! Just bump an old thread w/ your "new" info....and grow up.
I got a better idea...... listening. even before you replaced the wga you were told to test it before replacing it. you went ahead and replaced it and then said "It's not the actuator!"
relax dude. you're only frustrating yourself and pissing money away. if you can't diagnose the problem take it to someone who can.
take this advice to heart or take it as a flame I could care less. it's your money and stress.

what if you put a presure on the actuator as the turbo would, you'd need an air supply with a regulator and a gauge but it should open at around 7psi. That would work to tell you if it's the actuator.
Thread cleaned up. Now LOCKED.
StreetStyleJPTI -- everyone is right in that you need to stop creating new threads for this same problem. You are in fact making it more DIFFICULT for us to help you diagnose your problem. If you bump your old thread with new information, than ALL the information pertaining to the problem will be available for us to view -- not just the most recent bit. Not to mention that it clutters up this section, and makes it harder for other people to make their threads visible.
As far as the obnoxiousness is concerned .. I'm quickly getting tired of giving out individual warnings in the MSP Section. Don't try my patience, especially with crap like that childishness. It's thin enough.
