the other day, when leaving from work, I was greated once again by the unavoidable traffic in Hialeah, FL. while on the two lane street, the left lane was creeping faster than the right lane, so i decided to stay on the left. slowly but surely I approach a '90 nissan 240sx being driven by a young guy with the windows down. ever since I installed my CP-E CAI, i have been expecting situations like these where I could blow off some pressure at drivers with their windows down. so I waited until I increased the gap between me and another car in front of me, then I gave gas and let off...WHOOSH! as I passed him I was halted by the traffic ahead, soon after I hear his loud exhaust come up to my right side and then he asked "that has a turbo?" in a confused manner. ofcourse I told him yes and he became impressed. he then said "go ahead and do it again" as if he couldn't believe it. when he continued going with the traffic he would let me pass him all the time and wave his hand out as if to make me pass him. so ofcourse I passed him an additional 3 times until I lost him at an intersection. im sure others have had similar encounters like this?

I have a mazdaspeed cai installed and I revved my engine while out with the FAGMOB and they asked if I even had a bov. I have plenty of spool sound but I'm just not hearing blow off at all :(

I had an older lady tell me "nice car" in the parking lot at the Super Giant. I think she was being nice because I waited for her to cross. That, or she was a cougar and I totally missed my chance to score some mid 40s trim.

I seem to get stares and comments from teenage boys/early 20's guys, and thats about it. No one else even notices the car. I had an SUV full of em drive by with half their heads out the window as they passed me staring at it. With out the badge on the back the majority of em wouldn't even notice the car was anything special.

Sometimes some people don't even believe that what I drive is Mazda. They tell me that I slapped a different engine in it. Then of course I pop the hood if I get a chance and they are astonished.

The spot where us FAGMOB go bowling is packed with high school kids. There is a speed bump right in front of the main entrance that has a pretty sharp peak so going over 5mph isn't a great idea. I'm just minding my own business trying not to bang my rims against the bump taking it nice and slow and these little shits yell at me 'ya you are cool shitty ass mazda'

I drive so conservative and I wasn't trying to draw any attention to myself but it pissed me off a little. I wanted to get out of the car and back hand those kids. No respect for their elders :(

on the way to work I was approaching a 90 degree right turn that was several bumps on the floor, so I slowed down below average speed. the woman in the 4runner behind me started getting on my ass as I was making the turn slowly but surely. i wasn't going slow bother anyone else at all, just making sure i dont mess up my car thats all. exiting the turn i gave 50 % throttle to get out of her way onto the left. my 50% was 100% throttle for her SUV so therefore she still remained behind me on the right lane and thats when she pulled out the birdie
BAM! (bird) so eventually i resumed back to cruising speed and she just didnt let off her throttle and stormed past me...people are incredible these days!

So the woman gave you the bird for not flooring it around a turn? Probablly just pissed her vagina is dry and smells like bad fish.

People who drive suv's and camerys usually piss me off the most in my daily driving. Camerys for unnecessary breaking around not sharp turns and suv's for not being able to stay in their own fucking lane.

A kid in a Cobalt SS stopped after I got out, complimented the car, then asked a bajillion questions. Asked if I'd run it at the track yet but me thinks he was fishing for a race.

On that note, there a crap load of Cobalt SS's around here and with light mods they're a worthy straight line adversary from what I've seen

i was on my way home last night and some random lifted silverado revved on me. there were 2 bro's in it. so, naturally i ripped it. 45 seconds later, when they caught up, he flipped me the bird. hahahaha. why is he mad? probably cause he wasted 10 bucks revving on me.

Just like CTGrey said no one notices my car which is great. I've gotten stares only from few young kids driving other sport compacts. The last thing I want is to draw attention to myself in my cop infested hometown of Northern VA. In my experience with them, being Asian inside of a Japanese import has been bad enough. >_<

well i might as well share my birdie story...im driving on okeechobee blvd heading west and i come up to a light and theres a old guy on a harley behind me. the light turns green and i accelertae slowly like i always do to save gas which means im shifting at 2k rpms...its pretty slow and the guy gets mad and starts honking his bike horn at me..i eventually get up to speed and he stays behind me and we come up to another light. this time i knew he was going to try to pass me and the light goes green and he indeed does. i floored it and left him pretty bad and he pulled up next to me and BAM!, i was laughing while he gave me the bird and i waved at him but i was laughing so hard and he shook his head after he gave the big sesame street size bird.(fu)

Right on. When you get the bird it is always good to just laugh at the person. Always pisses them off more. I can't believe how bitchy people can be about something like slow acceleration. I have been granny driving the last week trying to see if I can get 300 miles on a tank and I get a few nasty looks from drivers. Usually the old people in their 50k sauerkraut burners.

I feel you on that since I get all the nasty looks when I slow way down for dips, pot holes, or raised bumps in the road. The guy behind me doesnt give a shit about their car and just plows over them while I slow all the way down to 2nd gear and navigate over them as smooth as I can.

personally i kind of like the fact that i dont get many compliments or attention in the car. To most its a nice looking station wagon/family car. 99% of the people dont know what it has in it or what it is capable of. I used to drive an SVT Focus and everyone and there mother wanted to race. In this car...nobody! its wonderful. IMHO it is the perfect sleeper and i like it that way

I have to admit the speed3 is one big sleeper... the only ones that notice seem to be the ones that know about cars and they usually arent the ones being an ar$e on the road.....

Full tank of Gas.... 50 bucks
Nicely equiped MS3 ... 20 something grand
Faces from oh so many Audis, BMW, and Acuras who cant believe this little thing is out accelerating, out handling them onto/on/and off the freeway.... Priceless....

One negative: nobody I mean NOBODY gets out of your way....

I had that problem with the focus too until I started driving with my Fog lights on like I do in the Mustang. People seem to clear out after that. With the Speed3 I drive with the HID's on all the time and it seems to get the same effect. Flip your lights on during the day and see if you get better luck.

on the way home from my golf match last night a car full of kids (im assuming mommy or daddys car) in a Nissan blew by me, did a double take and slowed down to my speed. They were looking out the window and wanted to run... i dont normally do that sort of thing, but i was cruising at 55 in 6th gear, so i just hit the gas. Even using just 6th gear his altima was no match...the comment i got was "Dude! That thing is fast!!!"

I usually just get the "Is that car turbo?" or "Did that come stock turboed?"

Yesterday I had a car pull up next to me at a light and the guy was like "Dude does that come with a turbo?" I of course said yeah. Then he looks over to his girl and she goes "Oh, it sounds good." :-)

The other night I was parked and an RX8 with an exhaust pulled up, with a girl driving it. She was there to talk to some of the people I was hanging out with. Then she looked over and goes "Who's got the Mazda over there?" Everyone pointed to me and she just goes "NiiiiiiiIIIIICCCeeeeee!"

I have the only Speed 3 running in the COM Sports Car Club track events this year. After being a little tentative at Watkins Glen (My first event with the car and first time at the Glen), other drivers of fast machinery now are quick to comment on their amazement of the way the "grocery getter" (coined by the drive of a NA Porsche 911) runs with them, or wooops butt. At a recent event at Mosport, an STi driver (he set fastest time of the day!) commented that the 3 was making some "crazy power" and he could not over take me on the 1/2 mile, 130 mph, straightaway. (bowdown) I just grin at all the great compliments, but now the secret is out and lap times are being compared to the MS3! (sssh)

I saw where you can buy the matching TURBO badge and I'm contemplating buying it. But I think I'll see what it's like a little longer driving it without people knowing what it is.

Especially now that I still don't know how to drive a manual fast, and I still kill it every other day! People would think 'what the F is she doing driving that fast car?'

People in Atlanta are all dicks. I always get shit from high school kids since I look like I'm 17. Some high school kid even yelled shit at me the other day when I was riding my bike. People at work even ask if I'm here to have lunch with my parents. 7 years since I graduated high school and I still have to put up with those pricks :( i blame it on too many rich people around here that spoil their kids and get them cars that they parade around as status symbols. I won't ever race someone unless it looks like it will be worth my time. I'd rather kick the parent's ass with my sleeper ms3 than take their kids.

haha... yesterday I got all excited because I saw a black hatch come up behind me in traffic. I wanted to show off that mine was cooler than theirs, but it ended up being a middle-aged woman who looked like she cared less. :/

lol~ I know exactly what you're saying. On my way to work this morning, I spotted a silver 3 hatch right in front of me on I-66, and as I was about to do a friendly wave I noticed it was a lady as old as my mom who probably couldn't care less about cars. >_<

I didn't understand it and I typed it. My cold medication is pretty far out.(loser)

I feel your pain. My office is arctic cold, and I'm shivering under a tech vest. It's probably like 100 outside right now. (I dare not drive out for a lunch) >_<

And I thought the older ladies were hot for me. Dang it. The car I had 2 cars ago was a Chrysler 300M sport. The seat leather comes impregnated with ben gay from the factory . I went straight to blue hairs with that one. Used to cruise the bingo halls around 9pm blasting some Perry Como. That's the hook up. If you can stomach relations with someone in their 70s, it's win win. No chance of pregnancy and they make the best fricken dinners you ever ate. I dated this one granny chick who used to pop her hip outta joint.........

'99 BMW M3 Driver: What's under the hood of that thing?

Me: 2.3 Turbo.

'99 BMW M3 Driver: Damn man, what kind of power is it making?

Me: I dunno, it's rated 263 HP at the crank.

'99 BMW M3 Driver: I gotta get a new car, I can't handle this. I just put $6000 into the motor at Dinan.

Me: It still goes pretty good man!

'99 BMW M3 Driver: Yeah, it's ok, 278 HP at the wheels.

Me: That's not bad.

Then the light turned green and we carried on our seperate ways. All this after I beat him by about half a car from a 5mph roll to somewhere in mid 4th, where he launched the car and I went easy in first because of a bumpy area in the road.

i've only received compliments from people at the dealership. one of them was from some guy who works at mazda and said, "yeah, we did a great job with this car."
hahaha. he complimented himself. aside from that, i just get looks every now and then from people i pass.
it is a nice sleeper

So far I've only gotten one compliment from a stranger, I'm sure mostly due to the sleeper nature of the car.

I pulled up to a little strip mall where this Sprint rep was smoking outside his store and he said "I like your MazdaSpeed3". He only saw the car from the front, so he must know enough about them to tell it apart from a regular Mazda3.

haha. no one knows about this car. it's fantastic. i told one of my friends that i got a new car. now, he's a car enthusiast and a tuner as well. and he asked me what i got. i told him an ms3, and he was like, that's cool. he had no idea. i called him up about a week later asking him questions about blow off valves, and he was like, "you're car has a turbo?!?!?!"

i laughed my ass off

You think that's funny, I took my car in for service and the DOdge tech asked me how long it took me to build my car. THEN he argued with me trying to tell me Dodge never made a Turbo Neon!! I left and went to the Toyota Dealer.

back on topic

last night, i was driving home at 3:15 and this cat comes up beside me on the right in a tiburon, and rolls down his window.
he asked, "that's the speed?"
i said, "yeah."
he asked, "it's got like 260 hp?"
i said, "about that."
he continues with, "damn...it's got a turbo, right?"
i said, "yeah."
further deepening the questioning, this guy asks me about the srt-4. "i bet you spank on them srt's."
i followed up with, "i haven't seen a lot of them, but i beat an s2000 earlier."

then the light turned green

I had an older lady tell me "nice car" in the parking lot at the Super Giant. I think she was being nice because I waited for her to cross. That, or she was a cougar and I totally missed my chance to score some mid 40s trim.

I had a Ford Probe GT. While stopped at a light, and old lady in the car next to me asked, "Is that a GTO?"

I still don't know if she meant the Pontiac or the Ferrari. (This was years ago, long before they reintroduced the GTO.)

A guy I work with, I see him every morning. He drives a nice lexus IS 300, exhaust, huge volk rims. So he asks me about my new car one day and looks totally dumbfounded when I explain to him it has a turbo. I thought for sure this guy would know his stuff but it seems like the ms3 really is the sleeper of the automotive world right now. I dont think he knows just how fast I can go(headbang)

False! My girlfriend in high school had a 99 beetle. The front seats fold forward pretty far, leaving plenty of room on the back bench. You can't lay down but she can ride your lap all day.

If they were 70+ they may be worried about injury. You aren't as flexable at that age and one wrong move and you need a new hip. Any car with a front seat can accomodate 2 people getting nasty but they probably wanted something with a bit more room to move around and explore the space of the vehicle. +1 for sex in the car.

Here's my 2 cents worth...

I'd say this is the perfect "sleeper". The only people you should expect to get noticed by are ones you race or that know about this specific model.

I really like the looks of the car myself, but really, there are a number of hatchbacks that look kinda like it to the untrained eye (which is most people). If it were a sedan - it would be even more so!

If you want a car that is reasonably priced and "kicks butt", this is it. If you want something you get noticed in, restore a car from the 70's or earlier. Just about any make/model will get lots of comments wherevever you go.

I get more comments about my Restored Jeep or Harleys on any given day than I will probably get on this one in a year.

I LIKE it that way. This "sleeper" is a keeper!

I get plenty of looks in my car, but mostly after ppl hear it :)

and, well if it is truly a restored CJ-8 then I have no doubt that you get PLENTY of looks, those things are sweet (pics?). My dream restore is a '85 M5 or go extreme classic and fix up an old camaro, I would def get some looks in those cars!

Don't get me wrong...it is a great looking car. I just feel that the Speed3 makes its biggest statement by far in the performance area. It's hard to "see" performance for the general public and it doesn't come stock with a lot of "bling".

Case in point...I have two Harleys. One is pretty new and dripping in chrome and has won a few small shows. The other is a 48 year old bare bones chopper. Everybody looks at, and many comment about, the chromed-out springer, but many less stop to talk about the '59 to which I have made quite a few mods and it can outrun the springer. The people that comment about the '59 know what it is - just like I would expect with the Speed3.

Probably nothing more to say here besides this: I have owned/restored/sold many cars and bikes over the years, and I can't see myself getting rid of my new Speed3 any more than I can my Jeep or Harleys. I believe that says it all.

I'll PM you a couple pics of the CJ-8 Scrambler to try to keep this thread clean and focused on the Speed3.
