Hey everybody, i did my first mod to my pro5 today and installed a intake, its a BOMZ intake, with a K&N air filter. I had to cut the pipes a little to make it fit and I also made my own mounting braket. Anyways, tell me what you think?

P.S. check out my lincense plate screws in the last pic, thought they were pretty cool, haha

Also, after installed, when i first started the car up and let it run, the check engine light was on, then i shut the car off and started it again and it went off? Anything I should worry about?

Only if it comes back on

Anybody Else? Does it look like it sitting right? I think i need to do some more cutting and position it better, well at least by looking at other pictures on this forum

Did you reset the ecu (disconnect the battery) when you put the intake in?

The position looks fine to me

It looks fine, but the rest of your engine bay looks like crap.

Plus... if your going turbo dont waste your time and money on N/A applications...

I actually did some more cutting the intake tonight, got it to fit without rubbing on anything, and it seems to even sound and feel better now. Check it out. Im probably not going turbo, unless i hit the lotto or something. Im just going to go with Intake, Exhaust, and header sooner or later. And Speaking Of exhaust...Look what UPS dropped off today....Drum Roll....

thanks, when i saw the size of the tip and muffler section, I was like Damn thats Big, but Im in love with it. I got it from a member on here that only used it for 4-5 months, only paid $300 shipped to my door, going to install it hopefully this week, depends on how much guts i got, im not very mechanic worthy or havent done much. it seems pretty simple, unbolt stock and remove, put this up and bolt, new gaskets, and i got kartboy exhaust hangers.

Its just a cat back right? Or does it include the mid pipe? The only hard blots on the exhaust are the spring loaded bolts on the front of the mid pipe. And make sure you have a new set of blots as well because if im not mistaken your blots on the axle-back portion may be tack welded on.

BKJT05

um, its a full cat-back. My dad and brothers and I are going to do some bonding and try to install it. or ill start the install and they will help when i get confused. ill make note about new bolts

well if you have 2100.00 by september its being sold to the first person who offers me the cash.. and when i say complete i mean complete..

only thing u have to do is cut the holes for the intercooler pipes and thats it.. everything is custom fit for the MP5 whoever buys the damn thing is getting a good deal on it

sorry to jack ur thread... but looks nice

i just ordered the exact same intake less the K&N. Does the ecu have to be reset before the first startup?

You dont have too, but you might as well, because its gonna have to re-learn everything anyways, probably will end up adding more fuel sooner if you do...

My only suggestion would be to find a mounting point for the brace that moves with the engine instead of one that is stationary with the body so there's no tug of war due to engine movement. I used a wiring loom bracket that's on top of the tranny that had extra hole in it & there's also a bolt on top in the same general area. I also opted for the turn to side towards the cai hole in the body vs. down into the heated & possible rain soaked path behind the radiator opening. K&N also makes a prefilter wrap thing just to give the filter another level of dirt & wet protection. Nice job, now you have the mod bug & you cannot give it back, you're trapped in a world of tweaking & twiddling with all that can be, you're wallet is shrinking, your free time is fleeting, your girlfriend is jealous, oh no let me out, no no no........LOL, it's all great fun, you'll love it.

How many hours should i give myself? first time exhaust install too.

because im a rookie and idk if i have the tools etc to do the install. any tips or tricks i could know to do it myself. I got this sat off so im going to wake up early and install my exhaust, if i got time, i might try to do the springs. Im hoping the exhaust wont take long, the springs shouldent, and after installing the intake i got some confidence.

That's the spirit! Search the 3rd Gen how-to section, I KNOW there's how-tos on spring installs. BTW, don't rent Advance Autoparts shitty spring compressors. Got to harbor freight. Theirs are like $8, and 10 times better than the ~$50 ones from advance / napa / pep boys / etc. Make sure you use WD-40 when loading them up tho, b/c you may over heat them and shred the threads (but that's w/ any spring compressor)

Looks great! Keep an eye (or ear?) out for the intake hitting the brake master cylinder as the engine moves. I cannot tell from your pics if you got enough clearance. Here is mine. I added an elbow to allow for a RAM air hose.

Not bad, but if you bought some more piping from autozone you can make it a true CAI like I did and rout it to the wheel well:

I replaced it with a weapon R coolant overflow can. Yah I forgot to mension you will either have to move the stock overflow tank or get a catch can like I did. I bought mine from protege garage:http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/product_info.php?cPath=281_21_31_135&products_id=632

cool, thanks. i think im going to keep mine how it is, just cause its done and i dont wanna mess with it, and now its time for the exhaust, and then i think im going to try to clean up and make my engine bay look better, maybe paint the heatshield etc, new hoses or something

Are you getting a CEL???

BKJT05
06-21-2007, 04:57 PM
Are you getting a CEL???

no, at first after installing the intake when i started it for the 1st time, the check engine light was on, then i drove it, turned it off, then started again and the light did not come back on, and the car drove fine, but then i did some more cutting to the pipes to make a better fit and now when im a red light or something it sputters and wants to die, but then it doesnt.

sounds like an intake leak past the air meter. Check your connections. Probably getting some un-metered air from somewhere.

If the IAT or MAF plugs aren't all the way plugged in you'll get an immediate CEL. Idle thing may just be coincidence that the egr needs cleaning too. Don't forget to do the IAC when cleaning the egr. Both will mess with idling if dirty. Both attached to throttle body. Do search on egr cleaning to find the how-to for doing both.

i dont know how you got it to fit the, cause if i would of kept mine stock size, it would of been forced against the radiator and resivor, and hit everything on the way. ahah. i love the way it looks, but idk y its idling so funny

i used one zip tie attached to the engine on the crane support to keep it off the brake resivoir, then i used another zip tie wrapped around the upper radiator hose to keep the intake from rattling against everything. havent had any problems with it other than the zip ties are leaving rub marks on the piping and the metal "bracket" gets so hot that it bends. eh its w/e my car is far from show worthy, and i hardly ever pop my hood for anyone so it doesnt really bother me. i mostly got it for the sound. i plan on having it powder coated silver sometime though

sorry to bump this old thread, but didnt wanna make a new one, anyways i figured out why my CEL was on? today i was going to put back the stock airbox etc becuase my car has been running bad since the intake install, well anyways as i was getting ready to unscrew a bolt on the intake, i noticed a small hose not hooked to anything, found where it needed to go, reset the battery and took a drive, and that turned out to be the problem. I was a happy man, car runs so good now with intake and evo2 catback. just thought id let everyone know in case someone runs into the same problem some day. THANSK
