Cruzing along, late at night on the ONE winding road we have here. From a stoplight went smoothly from first, to second, to third, and just stepped on it for a second. I shifted into fourth and was off the gas when I passed the cop.

LOL, I cant tell you how many times I have been just putting along slowly just for the hell of it and come up on a cop with a radar gun. If it would have been one of those days with a heavy foot I would have earned a fat ticket like you.

Wait until your insurance comes in and see what happens. Not sure about Canada but here in USA that amount of points will screw you over.

I'll fight it and most likely get Zero points.. but will still have to pay the fine.

But ya, 4 points would increase my insurance by 50-150%

How bad do your nuts hurt after that kick to the groin?

So how will fighting it erase the points?

In the US if you go to court on a speeding ticket the judge will reduce the ticket to 9 miles over or you get drivers school and the ticket comes off your record. You pay court cost and your done.

I got a ticket 2days after I picked my car up 81 in a 60 construction zone. judge reduced it and its not on my record. Just wasn't paying attention to my radar churpin I was looking at the needle go!!

I never had to go to court but as long as you dont get more then 1 in 1.5 years you can do traffic school and its off your record.

I am not so sure that what you are saying applies to every situation, you may have been fortunate enough to have a nice judge.

That's totally dependant on state. If you get a reckless here in Va as your first ticket there's a chance you'll be hitching a ride home.

wow. They are very easy in the states. In Montreal, they have cameras, and if you go to court, they just show you proof that you were going too fast, or that you went through the light, etc.

I can't count the amount of times I nearly got caught. So far I've only gotten one ticket out of town. I didn't have my radar detector then and the cops were hiding behind some trees. They got me for 74 in a 60.

Anyway I've come up on at least 3 cops with what looked like laser and either wasn't speeding at the time or wasn't the target. And I sh*t a brick every time because most detectors (including mine) won't pickup laser unless it's pointed directly at the car.

Radar is another story though, my detector has already saved me more than 3 times already (and paid for itself twice over). I suggest getting one if you have a heavy foot like me.

I'm sure it does depend. So far in NC, TN, GA my logic has played true.

Betelgeuse, I invested, key word invested in a system with ESCORT called the 8500 x50. This system works in conjuction with a laser diffuser system called the ZR3. since then i have never worried about laser tickets.... If I see them great if they see me and clock me I don't worry as they don't get me as their signal is diffused. WELL WORTH THE investment. I was doing about 110 thorugh GA (which is notorious for Laser). They clocked me it went off I saw them they saw me but no one got a ticket! This has happened several times.

Escort also makes an 9500 and the sr-2 systems which have more advanced features than mine. But to get started the 8500x50 is the way to go.

We're too "elite" to have radar detectors here in VA. lol~

Let me enlighten the Ontario Posters on the effect of convictions on your insurance.

Here's how it works with the company I work for.

With no convictions, a 15% Conviction Free discount is applied

With 1 conviction, there is no discount but there is also no surcharge.

You only start getting surcharged with more than 1 conviction regardless of points.

The Personal auto Insurance industry is very heavily regulated by the government in Ontario so you can bet the system is similar across most companies.

Nice! I might have to look into this if I see more and more lasers. Luckily right now, lasers are still pretty rare here.

In case anyone was wondering the outcome of this...

Met with the prosecutor last Tuesday. Got it reduced (without any effort on my part) to "failure to obey a posted sign of the road" or something like that.

$200, no points, and most importantly it will not be entered as a "speeding" ticket.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

4 points! Ouch! That is gonna hurt the insurance for real.

Edit: Just saw the result after reading the entire thread. Lucky. Note to self: meet with the prosecutor for all future tickets...LOL!

This is how it works in Ontario now:

You exercise option 3 on your ticket.

You fill out a form.

You get a first attendance appointment with the prosecutor.

If you come to a plea-bargain you go to court immediately and have it put to record.

If you do not come to a plea-bargain, you set a court date to fight the offense. No plea-bargains are given on court dates anymore.

More like $1300 a ticket.

$1,050, plus $61 in court costs and a fine that is typically about $200. - quoted from USA Today -

On the subject of radar detectors, what's a good one to buy?

I did some research here:

http://www.radarbusters.com/

and settled on a bell rx55 which I picked up for under $200. It's not the best out there and gets lots of false alerts but it saved my ass enough times that I ain't complaining.

Unfortunately with radar detectors you get what you pay for. The more expensive models >$300 are usually among the best with the least false alerts while the sub $300 range is the middle of the pack and so on. I'd aim for the middle or higher. If money is no problem then just get something like a valentine 1.

got nailed for 124 in a 65, Reckless driving(improper lane change) and driving with no headlights.

308.50 for the speeding and 118.50 for the other two. Went to court on July 3rd for all 3. Judge was sick so they withdrew all points and fines and just charged for court fee on a plea of no contest. Only paid 280 total with no points.

wow that was lucky for you! I've only had one ticket and it was for making a right turn on a red (cuz i didn't see the no right turn sign.) and a cop was sitting like right behind me when i did it, and i didn't think anything of it cuz I made a complete stop! And then when SHE pulled me over, I was like "umm...what did I do wrong?" :-(
