View Full Version : What is my freakin' problem?

I know I am a pain in the ass, however, I do apologize for the inconvenience. (updated)Well, I have a new factory turbo on the way, but I am still trying to figure out if that was the problem all along. If you don't already know, I have an issue with over boosting...and when I stomp on it, in 1st, it sometimes doesn't build boost... but the rest of the gears seem to...it also seems like its to quick to build boost...like there should be more resistance/hesitation...but when it boosts, it shoots up to 10 psi+. My boost gauge reads 21-22 HG idle...and 23-24 when I let off the gas and I'm driving. No manual boost controller...WGA has been replaced (a week ago)...just have a AEM CAI and Greddy RS BOV...all vacuum lines have been replaced and zip tied/clamped tight...no unusual smoke...Also, when I'm driving I can hear this weird sound, but not all the time though...just usually at lower rpms when I hit the gas, and it's not a whine/grind/or whistle...not turkey either...it's like the sound you would hear if your car into 5th right away and floored it (at lower speeds where you should only be in 1st) and imagine that sound a lot louder and more distinct.

So...what's the problem? the noise? over boosting?
my car will not build boost in first either, never seen an issue with it.
all your vacuum readings are correct
it's a small turbo, its spools fast and dies quick
is that noise your cai? it's going to make incoming air sound a lot different.
if you dont have any boost control i cant imagine anything other than your wastegate or line to it,
sorry im not of any real help.

I know its not the CAI (the sound is new and different). The line to the wastegate is perfect.

Is it dirt slow or does it run hard? You won't ever build boost (at least on the gauge) in 1st.

Mine never builds boost in 1st too. Never knew that was normal and thought it was odd so thanks nvmsp.

I build boost fine in first gear

I wouldn't say it runs hard, and its not really slow. Like I touch the gas and boom I'm up to 8...10...psi+.

The problem is...you don't have a problem.

1. 1st gear is very torquy to begin with...you won't feel the build up like 2nd gear and on.

2. Spikes... well you most likely had a weak WGA but it didn't help by putting an aftermarket ATP WGA.

3. I would get spikes of max 9.5psi and held 7.8psi when on stock boost with my ATP WGA so...that sounds normal to me to. Who knows how accurate these thing are made.

Try another WGA and also try shortening the vacuum line to WGA as much as possible.

I'm not saying it won't build boost in 1st, I'm saying it won't show up on your gauge.

StreetStyleJPTI

It is a problem, because it isn't a spike. It just builds boost and keeps going.

What boost gauge do you have? and Ask others if boost shows up in 1st on their guages.

Mine never has shown boost in 1st and I know many others who will tell you the same. It doesn't even only apply to msp's. I've seen the same thing happen in RX7's, 1st gear is too quick.

SW boost.

I dont understand why it wouldn't show boost? The car is making boost, so the gauge shows it, no?

the gauge reads to 10psi (i dont push it any further). It builds up to that (no spike) I mean it seems to build quickly if that makes ense...like i hit the gas hard and a couple seconds later and im at 10psi.

Let's talk rpm's here and beyond 1st gear. What rpm's do you hit full boost in 2nd and 3rd?

man im sorry but how dumb is that? i can hit a decent amount of boost (and it shows up clearly on my boost gauge) in first gear. my friends wrx shows boost on the guage in first gear. my friends turbo gsr shows boost in first gear.

our stock turbo spools faster than shit. if it isnt showing up on the gauge then something is wrong.

sometimes u cant get in boost cause of the lack of engine load. thats why 2-5 will show boost. when u have a boost controller thats y they tell u to test in a higher gear, cause u might not be able to get enough load for the turbo to spool to full boost in 1st or even second. it depends on car, if ur on a hill etc.

but yea, if ur making boost itll show up unles ur gauge is broken. thats just silly to think it wont show cause ur in 1st but its really making boost.

I didn't show boost in first until i went to hard pipes, intake and a catless exhaust .... then I finally could boost in first ...

Bullshit. The most your gauge will show in 1st is a few psi AT MOST. Your lying if you say in 1st your car's gauge shows full boost.

Gauge isn't broken been doing it since day one and boost holds and doesn't move.

watch your gauge next time, and post what amount of boost you hit in 1st.

I bet it's lower than what you boost in other gears.

its load dependant, so if ur goin up a hill in first youll show alot of boost, if ur flat youll show less so argueing about this doesnt matter. lets all hug.

if what u and msphtown isnt argueing than i dont know what is. anyhow its a miscomunication issue. what you said is that it will build boost in 1st but wont show up on a gauge, which makes no sense. as a gauge shows boost if its boost, plain and simple. now, thats not what u meant but thats how it sounded.

see? boost will show on a boost gauge reguardless. i know what u mean now tho, just saying its possible to not see full boost in 1st cause its so quick.

so as i said before, lets not clutter the thread.

if there is a load, there is boost, a boost gauge reads boost, if your gauge doesnt read it man your gauge is prolly fucked, or your car is.

there is only one factor...your gauge reads boost or it does'nt, to say that the car only builds "a few" psi in 1st gear is STRAIGHT UP dumb. i would say that if your gauge is giving you that indication, your gauge is not working properly.

NVMSP- i would check all your facts before you start a rumor such as: "the msprotege does not build but only a few psi of boost in 1st". clearly the video that msphtown posted shows that the car builds more than "a few". I also agree that talking about fighting is dumb, especailly when I know msphtown very well, and i hang otu with him at every car meet, and he and his friends know that im the guy that kicks everyone's asses.

but to crash kelly

you should refill your v-tach fluid and change your brake pads...i had the same problem on the stock amp, but when i siwtched my pads and went for the aftermarket amp i was reading full boost fine after that....but usually i run with my turbo turned off anyways...

I can say with absolutely no doubt that I cannot build more than 1-2 psi in first gear - if you'd like I can take a video of it. You said it yourself "if there is a load, there is boost" however the amount of boost is determined by the amount of load applied - this is the reason we can avoid going into positive boost during daily driving to conserve gas. Now, you might be asking why at WOT in first gear I'm not getting the full 8 psi of boost I see in other gears. The answer is simple - there is not enough engine load to develop more than 1-2 psi. Now there are two big reasons for me why this is so - those being I am running a severely lightened flywheel and a lightened crank pulley so there is less external load on my engine than there usually is. Before these mods (well the flywheel at least) I could build more boost in first gear. The boost building is also a function of the turbo. If I have a much larger turbo I probably wouldn't be able to build any boost in first gear (or possibly second for that matter). Likewise, if I had a smaller turbo (is that possible?) I could probably build more. Take it how you want, but this is how I see it.

For reference, even though my boost gauge does not "center" when off, it reads a perfect 21 mm Hg vacuum at idle and boosts up to 7.5-8 psi at WOT (not in first gear) so I'm quite certain my gauge is not off.

mspHtown

Is it dirt slow or does it run hard? You won't ever build boost (at least on the gauge) in 1st.

here is the main point of my argument ^^^^. i never denied that different factors affect boost (especially altering the load w/ flywheel, pullies, etc.). i made the video to show that indeed you do build boost in first gear and THAT IT WILL SHOW ON THE GAUGE. if you build 4 pounds of boost, it will show on the gauge. my car hits full boost in first (12 psi) when i go WOT on a flat road, on a hill, etc. it is absolutely ignorant to claim that the boost gauge wont read the pressure if its there.

Speed_Racer
06-13-2007, 10:26 PM
oh btw, guys in all seriousness I will say this. I have hit boost while my car was OFF THE GROUND being suspended by a lift while checking for a boost/exhaust leak.

yes, I said it, positive manifold pressure was achieved and you better believe it reved out like a bat out of hell. nuff said.

the ONLY cars that shouldnt hit boost in 1st from a roll are FULLY F******* built drag cars that make ungodly power on just as ungodly turbos.

edit: yea even 1st gear built a pound or two. not the surprising considering you can build a pound of boost just reving your engine in neutral. seriously, who even started this arguement?
