It's been a little while since we talked about the Cobalt SS Supercharged and maybe that's part of the problem. Although this sporty version of the econo-minded Cobalt and one step up from the non-blown Cobalt SS has won its share of accolades from sporting organizations and publications, it hasn't seemed to keep up with the vehicles at the head of the sporty compact class. We know that it is a competent performer, but it seems that GM has quietly decided to discontinue it. The naturally aspirated SS, however, will soldier on, but with a new name. For 2008, the Cobalt SS becomes the Cobalt Sport, and the Cobalt SS Supercharged is being dropped altogether. It could be that Chevy wants to focus more attention on the upcoming HHR SS we showed you a little while ago. Whatever the reasoning, it appears the little Cobalt that could, will be no more. Unless, of course, Chevy is just working on finding a way to get the GXP/Redline 260-hp mill into the Cobalt's engine bay. Follow the jump for the full list of changes for the 2008 Cobalt.

interesting. i guess my view of the cobalt is the same as everyone else's which is why this decision was made: it's ok overall, it's a good performer, but i wouldn't even test drive it if i was in the market for a car like that

Yeah,
When i think of the cobalt ss (supercharged or not), the phrase "polishing a turd" comes to mind.

It was a valiant effort and had a solid motor and not bad looks. Wasted potential IMHO.

If they'd supercharged the 4-door, I'd have seriously considered buying one. Most reveiws I read said it was very quick, and not a bad handler, basically, pretty great for the money. If I could have one with kid seat access, I'd have really thought hard about it.

This is a underrated car. It performance and handling are really good. Add the GM performance packages to it and you have a car with Mazdaspeed3 performance. Chevy should have uped the horsepower to 260hp to compete with the Mazdaspeed3. My cousin has a stage 2 Cobalt SS S/C and its fast and handles alot better then the stock S/C.

I agree with you Mikey. Definitely a car with great potential especially for the price. I cobalt ss with the same amount of mods as my MSP would rape me in a race. I just hate the way they look. Especially the rims.

I actually kinda liked the rims. It was like the everyman sport coupe. you know the MS3 was sorta rip-snortin yet different, the GTI is sorta uppity and well, german, the Cobalt SS was just sorta like "meat n potatoes". With some spices and the right cook, it coulda been a contender.
BTW: Yes I'm watching hells kitchen again so expect a lot of food terminology :)

idk i kinda agree with the polishing a turd...i mean my friend just bought one and he paid more for it then i paid for my Speed3 and he has had it bac to the dealership 3 times already for a checkengine light that chevy cant seem to fix and as far as keeping up with me he doesnt have a chance stock so i cant really see that car as a good deal.

I also agree with mikey. If you have driven one you will probably have a different opinion of them. Good little cars and 10x better than the Cavalier they replaced.
I also drove a 4 door SS once and it was a pleasant surprise as well.....in both looks and HP. But coming from a 95HP Protege, anything will have better HP than what I got now. Hahaha.

My buddy has a Ion Redline (Saturns version) and he is in the low 13s hi 12s. Its a very reliable good handling car.

that's the problem isn't it? people don't really consider them if they're in the market for a car in that category

i had a rental regular cobalt and it was still 100% terrible, especially in the snow where it was tail happy somehow and when trying to make it up a hill the traction control was making it so i was almost stopped because it wouldn't let the tires spin a little
