Hi,
My neighbor is selling me his 1996 Protege (1.5 lt engine). I believe it's a DX model - it has no power anyting- manual window cranks, no power locks, etc.
It is a 5 spd manual and the car is in avg condition. He wants 1000 dollars.
Recently the car has had a new A/C compressor, and related parts. Also last year it had a complete brake job.
He bought the car from a college girl 3 years ago and to his knowledge it has not had the timing belt done, unless it was done at 60K miles. It now has 116000 miles.
If the timing belt does break, will I have clearance between the valves and pistons? Anyone know? I may use the timing belt issue to come down a bit more on price.
I drove the car and it is very solid. Great brakes, no suspension problems, and it drives straight, with no vibrations in the steering wheel. Other than a cracked windshield and minor scrapes and dings, the car is really nice.
I've owned a 1.8L 5spd Protege (1991) in the past and loved the rock solid engine/tranny. Is the 1996 as dependable? The 1.5 liter doesn't have much power but it seems to be very miserly on fuel which is what I need for a 2 to 4 day a month commute of 300 miles round trip and errand running around town.
Does anyone have experience with the 1.5 liter DX? Opinions?
My friend wants 1000.00, I'd like to offer 800.00 because I'd like to get a new windshield and it needs a hubcap. KBB show a private sale of 1000 and some change based on avg condition and miles stated.
Thanks
David
