I damaged my key fob -- essentially it came apart in pieces. I managed to put it all back together except one part seems to be missing -- the metal contacts that holds up the buttons and makes them work. The key will open the doors manually and it starts the car, so obviously the chip is still working. Is it possible to keep the key part of the fob (it just snaps in) and buy a replacement for the rest of the unit? If so, how would I program then new electronics?

I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Try the dealer and see if they would replace under warranty.

Jason at onlinemazdaparts.com has great prices for parts. He may furnish you with the programming instructions if you ask him. The dealer charges a lot for the programming. I programmed a flip key to work with my MZ3 in about 5 minutes. I assume you can use the same instructions. Keys and fobs are sold separately and program separately. If you can't get the instructions from whoever you buy the fob from, shoot me a message and I'll try to dig them up. Or I can tell you where to search for them online. Good luck.

Yes you can just change the button portion of the switch... there is a simple programing sequence with your door light switch and ignition.
Ask your dealer the "how too" sequence"

I got the key and reprogrammed it with few problems. I used the following reference which came from the Mazda3 forum. The PDF is an official Mazda service bulletin and covers both the 2006 Mazda 5 and Miata. The only difficulty is doing the timed part of the procedure within 24 seconds. It takes a few tries, but it works. Here's the url for the PDF:

Does anyone know if a key from the newer Mazdas with the remote buttons built into the keyhead will work in our cars?
