got a p5 with a seized rear caliper, its no longer squeezing the rotor

what is the best option for fix this, the set screw is totally seized in place
mazda wants $600CDN to fix ONE caliper, i laughed at the guy on the phone. however, should i go with a big brake kit? or get aftermarket calipers of the same size and keep my rotors.

im hoping to spend less than $300 if possible, this is only for the rear calipers (i prefer replacing both of them since the other one isnt squeezing as hard as i want it too)

just buy a replacement caliper. do both sides while your at it. just to be safe.

big brake kits arent really worth it. unless your packing some serious power and need some good stoppage.

but $454 for ONE Caliper? (plus labor is where the $600 comes from)

at protege garage its $331 for 2 larger calipers, 2 rotors and brake pads

of course this is for the front and im sure i can get some kind of deal for the rear.

you dont need calipers from mazda. any good auto part store should have good replacement calipers for a good price.

I dont pack serious power, but my big brake kit has saved my ass from some serious accidents. I know that it has gotten me to stop short where the OEM brakes would never.

where did you get your big brake kit? protegegarage? is it only the fronts?

yeah Protegegarage. Ken is prolly the best vendor on this forum IMO.
got a smokin deal when he had a sale, and a litle mistake left me with two sets of rotors, both slotted/dimpled and the standard ones as spares.

But yeah just the fronts. I see no need for the rears at all. These seriously increase your stopping power. even though the rotor is only like 1" bigger.

go to Tunerworks and talk to Andy. I got my rear caliper for around 350 but you had to give him the old one. Give him a call. I got mine the same day I called him.

that is a damn lot of money for one caliper. I be Ken could do far better.

you are right, both rear calipers for $350 shipped from ken, PG FTW!, ill jump on it when i get another pay check,

4x tokico struts, 22mm sway bar, calipers, new mp3 player and a part for my CAI all on the same check may not be the best

How about removing that "toasted" caliper, then pump the brakes until the piston pops out (if it can).

Then trying to service it from that point on?

There are times that the retracting screw will not pull in enough for me to fit some meaty brake pads (like my Hawk HPS), so I had to use a C-Clamp or a disc brake spreader to assist it to retract.

One problem I can see is that if you do pop out that wheel cylinder, and everything is really FUBAR, then you have no rear brake.

I dont understand how calipers are so expensive.....
