GAS PRICES - OUCH! Just in time for the holidays

Are we getting worked by the oil industry right now or what? The gas prices in San Francisco almost $4/gallon.

Gas is always going to go up, I dont think we will ever see anything under $2.50/gal again, but who knows.

I think it will be around $4 over the summer then drop to low $3 over the winter. If we get hit with hurricanes though there is going to be some serious (upbum) going on.

I've given up worrying about the price of gas. It's all a fixed game in so many ways that the only way people can protect themselves is to limit their use of it.

I currently ride my bicycle to work on any day it's not raining, and ride the bus when it is. This has eliminated our need for a second vehicle, cutting our payments, miles driven, and fuel cost in half, plus our insurance has gone down by about a third. In fact, if we were willing to make other compromises, we could probably cut our mileage driven by half again without too much sacrifice.

It's all about taking a serious look at how you drive, where you drive, and how economically you plan your trips. When gas hits $10/gallon, it won't stop people from driving, they'll just do less of it with internal combustion vehicles, ride share more, work closer to home, and plan their errands better.

The bottom line is that it is NOT going to get better. If people can barely afford the gas to commute, then it's time to make a change, because the oil companies and OPEC aren't going to lose any sleep over it.

We in the States have nothing to complain about Gas Prices. I was in Canada for 2 weeks and everytime I filled up it was $50.00 U.S. dollars. Now, granted they have a better transportation system. I was happy to come back and pay $38 to fill up.

Gas prices don't bother me. Maybe I'm a sicko, but I actually like higher gas prices, because it'll force people out of those gas-guzzling SUVs and cause people to conserve and maybe respect the planet a little bit more. I was an impressionable kid in 1980 when the gas prices were also high, everybody wanted to be efficient and conserve, and all future cars were going to be FWD that weighed 2500 pounds and got over 40 mpg. Obviously we were kidding.

I remember thinking when I bought my Protege that even though gas was about 95 cents a gallon, that sometime during the life of that car gas prices were going to skyrocket and I'd be thankful I bought a car that gets 35 mpg. We all make our choices...I don't feel particularly sorry for the Suburban driver that now has to pay over $100 to fill up their tank.

^ very true. but it would take something more extreme to get people out of roomy gas guzzlers and stop car manufactures from even producing them in the 1st place.

but i do like where your minds at, high gas prices hurts us all, but some more than others. whether we like it or not, it seems to be a neccessary evil.

It would be nice to see that people stop using gas guzzling SUV. But look at Europe. Most of the cars 1.3L - 1.5L engines and you know their gas prices.
I'm pretty sure that NA gas producers will use as excuse low consumption for another price hike.

NBC Nightly News just had a piece on the SMART car coming over to the US in like a year or two. Now, I personally think cramming yourself into a two seater sardine can is a bit extreme, but if it puts more people on the road getting 40+MPG I’m all for it.

I understand this by having a wife who is originally from the Old Continent. First time I went to visit her I couldn't help making fun of her Nissan Micra, until it was time to fill it up... Daaang! Ka-cheeng! (the car's name said it all. It had a 1.3L engine which sounded like it had a little squirrel running on a wheel rather than real pistons and it could not go beyond 140Km/h in the "autobahn").

Now, the in-laws still drive a "larger" Beemer 5, but I can tell that their trips are much better planned so they use gas more efficiently...

My understanding is it's the other way around. High gas prices due to taxes lead to smaller cars, smaller engines, and more diesels, and a much more environmentally responsible way of life.

The world didn't cave in when gas prices were high in 1980. We drove less and bought more fuel-efficient vehicles. Cheap gas isn't a right unless you own the oil rig and have an unlimited supply flowing. I'd say we all made a choice to buy Mazda5s, which is a start in the right direction....

The part that bugs me the most with the gas prices continuing to rise is the oil companies saying that they have to increase the price cause of shortages and other excuses that make it seem if the price doesn't go up that they'll be taking a loss, yet every year for at least the past decade they have had record breaking earnings. I can't think of any buisness that has made record breaking profits every year for that long. Greedy bastards.

Actually the Smart is one of the safer cars on the road, Now try to put a weeks worth of groceries in it and you have a problem. Somewhere on youtube, there are videos of crash testing in the scenario you described and the smart car just seems to bounce off the SUV and stay far more intact than you would expect
