I have a 2003 mazda protege (LX)...

the engine says 1.6 DOHC or 16 DOHC, can't remember.

previous owner says its 2.0 L... is it a 1.6 says it says right on the engine?

Im am kinda confused and don't know much about cars.

Oh, how many lug nuts are your wheels?

16 DOHC, its a 16 valve engine. 2003 its a 2.0 not a 1.6. 2000 i believe was the last year the protege had the 1.6L in it...i could be wrong though.

Lug-nuts wouldn't make a difference, take a picture of the engine. What country are you in? In the U.S. 2002+ Proteges were only offered with the FS-DE 2.0L.

A better question would be, are your headlights one piece or two?

Canada....as for headlights, I am not sure. Thats how much I know about cars! kinda sad, still learning though.

I'm pretty sure its a 2.0 L engine now, just that before I thought I saw a 1.6 DOHC

but it says 16 valve DOHC

Its the 16 valve DOHC 2.0L FSDE, and it really needs cleaned up! And if its an LX it would have 5 lugs, but that dont matter.

Actually if it was an LX, it would have four lugs. The DX/LX are identical. It's just interior features and side markers thats make the difference. Both have the totally awesome rear drums. (drive2)

That's the nasty-est (not sure nastiest?) 2.0 16 valve FS-DE I have ever seen. I will link pics of mine just to compare when I got home.

yeah, the baby needs a cleaning. High pressure water spray good?

I'm a total n00b when it comes to cars, which is sad.

We have a winnnerrrrr (thumb)

As for Lug patterns, DX and LX are the same lug pattern, 4x100. ES, P5, MP3 & MSP are 5x100 or 5x114.3.

Well basically all it takes it a lot of time and dedication. I use a bottle of Simple Green and a bottle of water and a ton of rags. Using that combination you just go inch by inch cleaning everything. Don't spray alot of fluids on the electronics obviously. You just wet your rags with simple green and water until it is damp. It helps to remove the battery, the intake, and the battery tray.

Also you can get some electrical tape and clean up some of the wire rat nests.
