Hello, everyone!
After reading the various threads about the wonders of Seafoam I went ahead and used it on my 2000 LX Protege. The car has 120000 miles on it, so I thought it couldn't hurt.

I applied half of the Seafoam through the brake booster line and the other half thru my fuel tank and followed all the instructions on this site. I thought everything was fine until I started driving the car.

I noticed immediately that the car would start at lower rpms. Before it would start at around 2000, but now it starts at around 1500 rpms. A 500 rpm difference!

Here is where my problems starts: While driving, if I come to a sudden stop, the rpms will drop all the way down to 0 and immediately jump to 700 rpms, then back to idle at 500 (normal).

The car acts as if it is going to die on me (when it drops so low all of a sudden) and has in fact turned off on me once during slow rush hour traffic! The car never did this before I used the Seafoam, so I'm thinking it is a result of the engine cleaner?

What could be causing this?

Any help to diagnose or pinpoint the problem would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!(help)

Have you tried resetting the ECU? Does your vehicle have an IAC? Perhaps it needs to be cleaned, Checked the PCV system? I would start with the easy thing by making sure you have all passwords/ security codes you need and reset the ecu by disco'ing the battery for @ least 30 min.

If not start checking the other options but if it is happening when you brake hard sounds like you might not have gotten something connected back where it needs to be . I.E vacuum loss from the brake booster? Perhaps ? These are all just shots in the dark of course.

make sure whatever lines you messed with are reconnected, sounds like a vac leak to me.

vacume lines that you used.... check all those first, make sure that ther on good!!... then make sure ther are no cracks in those lines, or if you removed any of the intake, just redue those steps, chances are somthing just isnt tight enough...

Thanks for the replies!

I only unhooked the brake booster line, so I'll give it another look and make sure it is on properly.

As far as the battery, I unhooked and let both terminals touch for a few minutes. I'll disconnect it once more and leave it overnight.

Let me try these!
Edit: Now I have to wait for the ECU to reset? I'll see.

Thanks!

an easier way to reset the ecu using the battery terminal method is to disconnect the positive, and then go inside turn your head lights on and push the brake pedal that will drain the power and reset the ecu, start it up and it will take a bit for it to run through all the sensors, and settings then it should drive fine.

Just to be safe check your spark plugs. I have had an issue lately(NEVER GET BOSCH PLATINUM +4 for the protege im gonna post what happened later)..and my car was acting up then somethign kind big happened. Just check them out to be safe, seeing how they would take a lot of the abuse from the cleaner, and its a 5 minute check.

Also maybe coincidence and you think its the cleaners fault, but you may have hit another vacuum line while under the hood. check the one that leads to a Mitsubishi Sensor on the back side of the passenger strut tower, that came off on me and really messed with my idle.

you said your car his 120k on it right? i have heard of people saying that puttin cleaner such as seafoam through a relatively high mileage engine works against it sometimes. because it cleans all the gunk and whatnot out, but that gunk was what was holding everything in place and sealing everything. this might be a suspect in why your car is running funny.

but check the vac lines like everyone suggested, hopefully the problem is due to that issue and not internal engine problems.

Eh, I ran it though mine... in fact 2 cans worth in 2 weeks... at 150kand I didn't notice anythign with the exception of the car acts like it wants to die from time to time. That is why i ran 2 cans.

Thanks everyone!

I reset the ecu and double checked the line. The car returned to normal after a day of driving.
Is was weird.
