As one of the most notorious supercars on the planet, the R34 Nissan Skyline ceased production in 1999. With massive dealer demand and Nissan enthusiasts around the globe calling for a successor, it was at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001 where Nissan unveiled the GT-R Concept confirming that the GT-R legend would live on. Then after two years of silence and a growing restless public, Nissan announced at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show that the GT-R would be released in 2007. Now with the launch of the production model getting closer, Nissan is set to unveil a near final production model called the GT-R PROTO in one week's time at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show. One week ago Nissan released some teaser design sketches of the Nissan GT-R PROTO Concept. Stunning!<O:p</O:p

Seen here testing at the Nurburgring test track in Germany is a Skyline GT-R test mule wearing a heavily modified body of an Infiniti G35 Coupe. To clarify, the G35 Coupe was named the Skyline in Japan since 2001 but never received an ultra-high-performance engine/drivetrain and therefore never lived up to it's predecessor's supercar status. But that's all going to change now with the new GT-R. Taking a closer look at these photos you'll notice the slightly more acute roofline, hood air-scoops, widened body with flared fenders, rolled out rear quarter panels and rocket launcher like dual exhaust pipes which is rumored to give way to 480hp from a 3.2 liter twin turbo V6 engine. Sources say that the purpose of this particular testing session was to evaluate the GT-R's suspension which is being tuned by Lotus at their development center in England. This GT-R will be exported globally and that includes US (under Infiniti brand) and Australia. Look for a price tag around $80,000 USD.

I think it rouins the sexy lines of the regular skyline/g35I agree...A regular G35 with 480 HP would be a lot nicer IMO...THe G35 is about my favorite car right now....Has been since it came out in this style...The 350Z doesnt turn me on at all without a nice body kit though...Weird.

Latest estimates move the power target north to 450 or even 500 hp, with speculation centering on either a twin-turbo variation of the current 3.5-liter V6 as found in the 350Z and Infiniti G35, or a version of the Infiniti 4.5 liter V8.

According to Autoweek.

dbzeag
10-19-2005, 07:21 AM
I think that looks great. Looks like a menacing ride that you would see in a futuristic video game and that's what the Skyline is. It's essense is to push the laws of physics to what is normally thought realistic and does things beyond expression. The design of this car reflects that idea. This car looks like it can bend time if the driver wanted. This car looks like it owns any road or any condition you throw at it.

The Vette looks and acts like brute force slamming head on into physics and brutalizing the road with sexy grace. This looks like it could carve the road with samurai precision.

Anyway,my buddy sent me this,it's alright! At least,it's not as boxy as the r34.The side view looks like a mix of the R34 in the rear and a Z in the front. The rear looks like the Elise since it's got a curve in that booty(lol2)!And yeah,I'm w/ Iggy, the front reminds me of the Celica.

Bidding to set a record for the longest drum roll in automotive history, Nissan unveiled yet another concept edition of its next-generation Skyline GT-R during the Tokyo Motor Show press preview on Oct. 19. It’s called the GT-R Proto (as in prototype) and a production version is coming to America. Eventually. If you’re thinking “haven’t I seen/heard this before?” the answer is yes, and no...

you know how much that would piss a lot of NISSAN enthusiest off?

i'd be NISSAN suicide.

chances are they will be using a variation of the 350Z/G35 engine the VQ35DE,most likely comming up with something like a VQ35DETT,or a VQ40DETT

eting_pro5
11-13-2005, 12:29 PM
But how many of the middle age guys who buy it are going to know/appreciate the heritage of the car. It's not exactly in the average enthusiast's price range. I could see them using a V8 to compete with the Z06/GT/Viperish

LASERBLUE135
11-13-2005, 02:13 PM
the reason a v8 was brought up was because they said the american customers needed the v8 to compete with cars in the price range. I disagree. the skyline name is huge in USA because of games like gran turismo, so a turbo 6 is really the ONLY option they can go with IMO.

Once again making the rounds at the Nürburgring race track in Germany is this super-powered, special-bodied Infiniti G35 Coupe. But insiders tell that this isn’t an Infiniti G35 at all. It is really a test vehicle for Nissan’s upcoming super sportscar, the Nissan Skyline GT-R.
Power for the Skyline is rumored to be a 450 hp, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, which will put power to the ground with all-wheel-drive. Naturally handling is a top priority, and it is reported that Nissan has contracted with Lotus to help fine-tune track performance.
The car in the photos is obviously made up from Infiniti G35 coupe sheetmetal, substantially modified to fit the huge tires, and with a big front airdam. This is a test mule, though, as indicated by the poor fit of the rear bumper to the taillights. The final design will be much more like the Nissan GT-R Proto concept car that has recently been shown at auto shows.

Yeah, this is precisely the same thing Mazda did when spy photos of the new MX-5 first surface and they chopped up the body of the RX-8 and tossed it on the new MX-5 chassis. IIRC, the wheels didn't even line up in the fenders though, whereas this Skyline is very well put together for being a test mule.

The enthusiast world has been waiting for the next Nissan Skyline for some time now, particularly American enthusiasts, who are set to get their first factory-sanctioned taste of the performance legend when it makes it into US showrooms for the first time.
Looking very close to the sensational GTR-Proto concept shown back in 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the 2008 Skyline appears to be in its final stages of development, as evidenced by these KGP Photography shots of the car caught testing at the Nürburgring.
While all previous Skylines were sedan-derived, the new model will reportedly gain its own two-door architecture, which bodes well for the car from a performance standpoint.
Prevailing rumors have the car taking on a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6, itself derived from the engine in the 350Z. Power bogeys put the mill in the range of 450 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of twist. In true Skyline fashion, the car will be all-wheel-drive, with a further evolution of the GT-R’s electronic ATTESA ET-S torque-sensing system, tied into a four-wheel steering system.
All of which should be good for a 0-60 miles-per-hour time of well under 4 seconds, and a top speed somewhere on the ambitious end of 180 mph.
Interested parties might want to start inquiring with their local Nissan dealers now.

Best shots yet

These are the best shots yet of what’s to become Nissan’s answer to cars like the new Audi R8 and the future Lexus LF-H.
The all-new Nissan Skyline GT-R, likely to be introduced in spring 2007 as a 2008 model, was snapped testing at the Nürburgring in Germany by Nissan’s motorsport department.
The car features relatively thin disguising and yet gives away major details such as air-intakes in the front fenders and on the bonnet as well as two pairs of impressive exhaust pipes and a huge rear wing.
Reportedly, the car will be equipped with a 4.5-litre V8 delivering some 450 bhp.

That's bc they discontinued those cars so the demand for them are high since car guys like us want a Supra, a 240SX, an 86 Corolla,so we are willing to pay that much for one just to have one.I mean unless they discontinue the GT-R 5,10 yrs after it's release(which I highly doubt),the price will go down.

Photos of a masked Nissan GT-R lapping the Nürburgring last fall received more hits on the Internet than Miss USA did after a night out on the town. The reason: Despite its expected price tag of about $70,000, the GT-R will be the most alluring Japanese sports machine to come our way since the Acura NSX in the mid-1990s. Previously sold only in Japan, the GT-R (Skyline GT-R as it was formerly known) has been an icon to boy racers and aftermarket tuners alike since the R32 appeared in 1989. The upcoming version, which will hit dealer showrooms in late 2007 or early 2008, will be the first model marketed worldwide, thus the first official version available in the U.S. Nissan has remained mum regarding this sixth-generation model, but we have discovered some interesting new tidbits about the car.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn confirmed that the GT-R will be built in Japan. The chassis will be assembled in the company's Tochigi factory while the powerplant will be produced at its Yokohama engine plant. The official logo for the car has also been released. As for the performance of the GT machine, here's what we know so far.

Power will come from a 3.7-liter version of Nissan's VQ powerplant. A pair of turbochargers will help it produce about 450 bhp and 360 lb.-ft. of torque. Because longtime fans of the GT-R are accustomed to more output via aftermarket tuning, Nissan has seemingly left some room on the table for buyers wanting to increase the power of their GT-Rs.

Stock boost pressure will be limited to about 10 psi, but we hear that the engine is capable of handling a lot more. A tamer version of this V-6, codenamed VQ37HR-TT, will make its way into the upcoming Infiniti G35 Coupe. Key differences between the engines are that the GT-R's VQ will have the twin turbochargers, lighter pistons and connecting rods, as well as a beefed-up crankshaft. Other custom parts may make their way into the engine, including racing profile camshafts and new valvetrain. It will come mated to a Getrag 6-speed transmission or a paddle-shift sequential automatic with seven or eight gears.

The GT-R will have awesome stopping power, especially if it wears the same brakes spotted during testing at the Ring. Gold-colored Brembo calipers sparkled in the sun as the GT-R attacked the famed Nordschleife. Upon closer inspection, the fronts appeared to be 6-pot calipers. As for the car's handling, we're pretty sure that it will be all-wheel drive, with a new version of Nissan's ATTESA system. For the record, the car had little trouble negotiating the Carousel at more than 110 mph. Its lap times were reported to be around 8 minutes flat, quite impressive for a test mule on a somewhat crowded track. Could it match or eclipse the Porsche 911 Turbo's time in the 7-minute-40-second range in an all-out effort? The answer awaits us in just a few months.

I was wondering what the GT-R concept would look like in a different color. The next G35 coupe gets a new VQ engine. Infiniti should just put the 4.5 from the M45 under the hood of the coupe.

Adam Sessler probably doesn't know how to drive stick, or is one of the people who drive 10 below limit in the left lane. Either way, I'm liking the GT-R. I'm hoping Toyota will rethink the Supra and make it competition to the GT-R. Definitely not big on the whole N/A thing. Twin turbo baby

Around 5:30 Monday night, Keith (evo4g63) and I were heading down Cerrillos Road when we spotted the silver prototype Nissan Skyline, along with 2 black Armadas turning into an Amigo Mart on the opposite side of the road. Being that this was a rare sighting, we quickly flipped a "U" and pulled into the station. As we pulled in, the car was surrounded by roughly 12 Asian guys who were logging information. Hoping that they spoke English, we decided to get down to talk with them about the car. I asked one of the guys what he thought of the car, and you guessed it, he had no idea what I was saying. However, he did manage to whisper a question into my ear, "you know GTR", in which I replied, "heck yes". As he asked me that, I noticed a large bulge on the right hand side of the covered interior. To my pleasant surprise it was a Japanese version Skyline equipped with factory turbos. We spoke with the reps from Nissan Japan a bit longer, and after a good 10-15 minutes of leg humping, let them get back on the road. The car has Michigan plates, and is being tested on US roads, so make sure to keep an eye out for it!

Keith managed to snap a quick photo of the car, so hopefully that little whore bag will post it in the near future for y'all to scope. (In other words, PM him and bug the shit out of him!)

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R on the track

Our hunt for the latest on the 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R continues. Nissan's engineering crew headed north after a brief stint on the streets of L.A. (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=119564), so naturally our road-weary spy shooters followed. The destination for the Nissan Skyline GT-R prototype and its Porsche 911 Turbo (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/porsche/911/100702449/prices.html) chaser was Sears Point Raceway, a roughly 2.5-mile road course that has the odd distinction of hosting one of the two road races on the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule.

According to our shooters, the bulk of the day was reserved for solo hot-lapping with the Skyline GT-R, although Nissan's test-drivers also laid down a handful of laps in the 911 Turbo. Unlike NASCAR, which uses an abbreviated version of the Sears Point road course, Nissan was using the more traditional setup favored by IndyCar and AMA Superbikes. Hand-timed lap numbers showed the two cars circling the track at an almost identical 1:50.00 pace.

Two drivers were seen behind the wheel, although the majority of the laps were completed by a driver we later identified as Toshio Suzuki. A former open-wheel champion in Formula 3, Suzuki also had a brief stint in Formula 1 along with several runs at Le Mans and Daytona. Clearly, Nissan is serious about getting this Skyline dialed in just right.

Suzuki has previous experience with Nissan as one of the main test-drivers during the development of the FM platform that underpins the 350Z (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/nissan/350z/index.html). And judging by our video of the Skyline GT-R, Suzuki was pushing the prototype pretty hard. Even with its ultra-sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, the Skyline GT-R was seen hanging its tail out on a few tight turns, the result of a rear-biased power delivery.

Other details uncovered by our shooters include massive drilled brake rotors front and rear and what look like six-piston calipers up front. There were numerous tire changes made throughout the day, and we were able to identify one tire as a Bridgestone Potenza of undetermined specification.

After a full day of testing, Nissan's engineers loaded the Skyline GT-R into their support truck and headed to a local hotel. We're not sure if this is the last of the GT-R's stateside test run, but rest assured: If it comes out of the truck again we'll be there with cameras rolling.

Better hope that that is incorrect, cause my colleague has been saving up for the past year and a half to buy this thing. He purchased a G35 Sport coupe with Brembo kit in 2005 to tide himself over until it became available.

He will be SORELY disappointed if it doesn't come here.

On Nissan CA site the GT-R is listed as going on sale in both Canada and USA in spring 2008. So I guess that answers that.

So, AutoExpress releases information today that says that the new GT-R will come in at £29,000... in Japan. We're not sure how that's going to equate in U.S. dollars (or yen, for that matter), but what was even more interesting was that they divulged the varying levels of trim that will be offered when the GT-R goes on sale next year.

The "entry-level" version will come equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, four piston Brembos and the aforementioned £29,000 price tag. The next step up would be the £35,000 V-spec version, that gets a seven-speed DSG and six-piston stoppers, while the top o' the line Evolution package will get everything included in the V-spec, but will also come with lots of carbon fiber pieces to reduce weight. The GT-R Evolution will likely be priced over £50,000.

Again, we have no idea where these figures and trim levels came from, as AutoExpress only says that "sources" provided in the information. Whatev, we're still salivating.
