View Full Version : Map Updates for Nav system

Ok, another new toy question. When I registered my GT at Mazda, they offered a link for check for map updates to Navdeq. When I went to their site, they did not list the Mazda CX-9 as one of the vehicles for which they have updates.
Does anyone know whether that company is the one that does map updates?
More immediately, does anyone know what the current version of the maps is?

I think that the manufacturer of the Navi system is DENSO .. but not sure about the maps. The ones listed in the Mazda site are NAVTEQ.. I have used Navtech in my PDA before .. my CX9 maps maps seem different.

Good god. Read your DVD disc.

What's a DVD disc?(hah)
Seriously, tho', the fact that the Mazda site and its vendor's sites are not in accord on whether they support the CX-9 doesn't leave me with any warm and fuzzies about whether they are the right vendor.
So to go back to my question: does anyone know what the current RELEASED version is? And, given Mazda's inconsistency with the vendor, who is actually doing the map updates?

Well, got an e-mail back from Navteq.
"Thank you for contacting NAVTEQ. While Mazda uses our map data we neither produce nor distribute the disks for the CX-9. For update information please consult your nearest authorized Mazda dealer or call Mazda direct at . . . "
Still waiting to hear from Mazda.

If the system is DENSO - the maps used may originate from NavTeq but the mapdisc will be different format - so you cannot swap the Navteq disc to Denso one.
I know i tried on My CX7 - if you insert the Navteq mapdisc the system responds with the "not a mapdisk" error message.

So I guess we all wait to see if/when Denso comes up with a new map?

OK I just bought the new 2008 CX9 GT about 1 week ago and the CD version I have is MAZDA PART No. GP9A 66 DZ0 D. I guess this is the latest one, because on all the forums I see people only have GP9A 66 DZ0 C. Not that it matters a lot since even with the new CD the NAV sucks compared to my TOMTOM. But if any one wants the new CD version I can burn ISO and upload it to their desired location so they can download it.

My CX9 GT is one week old now. Last time I was driving on HWY#410 north bounce. After I passed Bovaird Dr. I noticed that the high way has disappeared on the nav screen. Well, the new portion this HWY is built over two years now and I expect it to be on my 'latest' toy. I'm disappointed again that my 04 TL nav with dvd room dated 2006 has this new portion of the high way.

My new CX-9 came with the Rev D. DVD label reads Mazda Part No. GP9A 66 DZ0 D (K4238). Made and ISO image and burned just fine to a double-layer DVD.
I can post to an FTP site, but not sure Mazda or Denso would appreciate that that. Drop me an email. howardru4u@yahoo.com

At www.POIfriend.com you can download various files for custom POI's. In my case, I have a file of all the Tim Horton's coffee shops across Canada... (can't live without my Tim's). After market Nav's like Tomtom, Magellan, etc have an upload feature for custom POI's using an SD card or cable.
My question is, is there a way to upload the csv file that is now on my PC to the Mazda factory Nav ? I could burn the file to a CD or DVD but there doesn't appear to be an upload function on the factory Nav s/w interface.
Anybody heard of this functionality ?
When I need an extra-large Double/Double, I'd rather not go searching...
Thanks,

The Nav system in the CX-9 is about as lame as a GPS system that you can buy. No such capabilities are available with the built-in Denso system.

SeCX-9, I agree re: lameness.... I would have expected this from GM/Chrysler
Too bad, because with the iPod adapter interface it shouldn't be hard to design an interface to the Nav. A guy could download custom POI's onto his iPod, then upload them via the cable interface.
Oh well, I'll have to resort to blood hounds to find my Tim Horton's.

Here's a great tip I posted on another board to easily find POI that are not in the GPS system.
It's for using the hands-free Bluetooth and Google Search.
Use the CX-9’s built-in address book and add “Google” to your address book. Program in the free directory assistance Google 411 phone number 1-800-466-4411. Now you can do a GOOGLE Search while driving your car, hands-free!
Now you’ll be able to use the voice CX-9’s voice recognition system to dial the Google 411 voice recognition directory assistance and search by business name or category (food, gas station, movie theatre, CVS, Tim Horton's etc).
The system will verbally list the top listings with address, connect you automatically to the business, and even send you an SMS text message to your phone if you say “Text Message”.
This is an easy way to find those Points of Interest that the built-in GPS navigation system doesn't have.
All for free without any directory assistance 411 or operated-assisted wireless carrier fees!

I called Mazda today and they told me that customers can no longer get the updates from Mazda and they have to go through the dealers. They made it sound like it's free when in reality you have to simply order the latest DVD which is 250 bucks. If anyone has an iso let me know :)

When you say Mazda, are you referring to online? I checked with my dealer last month and they didn't know..
They mean Mazda as in Mazda USA.
Mazda obviously wouldn't distribute parts direct on their website, even though we are talking about a software that technically could easily be made available for download distribution. But unfortunately, it's considered a part# for sale through the shop, not a software update. And more unfortunate is the fact that the dealership parts/service people are ignorant of it's existence and any other nav/av feature for our vehicles besides the ipod adapter.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind paying a fee for the latest years maps and software. Garmin's is a reasonable $65. Although our nav's are integrated, they are not user friendly, can't load poi's via usb/sd, and frankly not worth $250 (you could by a nice Garmin unit at that cost) for a software update...Even if your car is still under warranty! imo that should be a service or serviceable part. Not the black hole of a Mazda dealership.

I sent an email to Mazda about a navigation update and got the following response:
Thank you for contacting Mazda!
Updated Navigation Discs can be purchased from a new website that will be launching in the next few months. Mazda is now working with a vendor by the name of DENSO to develop the updated software for the maps in your vehicle.
The web address is mazdanavigation.com
Please keep in mind that navigation maps run approximately one year behind as to allow time for new software development. For the 2008 model year, there should be a 2007 disc available. 2008 year maps should be released sometime in early 2009.
If you have any other questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Assistance Center directly.

So I found two other ways: 1) Look at the included DVD sleeve; 2) Goto Nav Setup, Calibration, Map Version.

So maybe it's not THAT outdated after all. Mine is CX-9 DVD, rev B, and maps on that one are 2006 version. You've got 2007 maps. Not too bad!
I'm sure if you go back to your dealer and complain, they'll give you the correct DVD.
BTW, have you already filled out the questionnaire from Mazda? You know, the one about your buying experience? From what I know, car salespeople are always very eager to get perfect marks on those questionnaires. They always beg you to give them a perfect score. So if they refuse to give you the most recent navi DVD, just mention you'll give them a bad review in the questionnaire...
Good luck! Let us know how it all ends, and what's the latest version of that elusive navigation DVD (if you ever get one). ;)

E definitely has map updates compared to C (the only other version I've tried). Local roads in newer subdivisions in my area are way better filled in. It also added Alaska and Hawaii (which I'm pretty sure weren't there in C).
I didn't notice any obvious software changes; not to say there were any - but nothing jumped out at me.
I haven't gone looking at POI details to see what's different (and don't specifically recall issues from C to look at); but if the maps are updated then there are probably some POI updates as well.

FiveG... The most current map update will say on the disc 2008 with 2007 maps. In talking to Mazda just this week there supposed to release a new version by the end of January that we will be able to purchase online. I've noticed several major grocery stores not listed on the current version which I find very strange and like several others I'm not happy with the system greying out features once you start moving preventing you or the passanger from inputing another destination? I am however working on a solution for this and will post once I figure it out. NW (cool)

Version "D" is seriously messed up. It has me taking backroads instead of the highway when the highway is the shortest/quickest way. Then it tells me to take U turns and go up on ramps on the other side of the road.

If anyone wants to eliminate the grey-out (above >5mph),
read this thread.
It involves inserting a switch between OE VSS (vehicle speed sensor) input to NAVI with a DIY Speed Pulse Cheater. (the circuit design, etc are all included). This is only for people who can deal with electronics.
http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tundra/110944-diy-all-nav-functions-all-time/
I plan to do it when I have time. The grey-out is not so-much an issue for me YET.
Tundra? You said.
Yes, both use NAVI system from DENSO (used in Toyota/Lexus and Mazda).

K4238
On the map verision screen:
V 05.07.11
2007 ver 2
At first look I thought I was 4 revisions behind. Then I noticed mine was "GS3M" and the ones mentioned here are all "GP9A." Is it possible this is Rev. A of a whole new generation, or did I get a completely wrong disc?

I had the same reaction when I first got my 09 and the parts department at the dealership checked and said an updated version was supposed to come out in late January and that they had placed an order for me to receive it ~ I just checked with the dealership and was told that it's not out yet!

The 2009's use a different generation navigation system, you have 2 disks that arent backward compatible with the 07-08, but the 07-08 disc will work to some degree in the 09, don't know if you will get all features though.

I still haven't found a gps that doesn't take me in circles before getting me to a destination. So I'm still not ready to have one in the car that costs hundreds just to update with outdated information.
When they can make them work, I will reconsider. What they really need is real time updating, to a common database for all devices. Maybe something like Wikipedia where users can correct and add info. Pull into your garage, the car logs onto your wireless network, and updates it's maps and POIs. Or has a USB interface at least.
Until then I can read a map.

basically that's what TomTom does, minus the wireless updates but also minus the hassle of a wiki. I plug mine (now my wife's) in via USB and it updates with corrections ppl hav posted via the device. I also hav the ability to set map corrections on my device on-the-spot, and when I update mine I have the ability to post my corrections to the community.
intelligent model, but I do think the TomTom is a flawed device, and it once told me to go left when it meant go right amongst other confused moments.
on a separate note, a gal-I-work-with's husband works for NAVTEQ, but I don't know if I can get a hook-up...

I've been waiting for a DVD update for my 09 CX-9 for six months now (it still has an 07 version DVD in it) and the dealer finally told me to file a complaint with Mazda Customer Service.
I called them and the agent apologized up and down and swore that it's a supplier issue and that Mazda is well aware of the problem. He also said he'd put me on the "complaint" list and that people on the list will receive all new information as soon as it's available!
I'd encourage as many of you as possible to call Mazda to complain (800-222-5500) since it's not right to have an out-dated map when you have paid for the option in good faith!

I went to http://www.mazdanavigation.com/ContactUs/ a couple of months ago and posted a message indicating my dissatisfaction in having purchased on 09 vehicle and receiving older maps. I have had several problems with the maps, and I told them that having paid for a nav system, I expected to get something usable. I received a prompt reply and was instructed to order them from Denso (through the site), and upon receipt submit the order number to Mazda for a full refund. I did, and received the refund in good time. The rebate was even sent back since I had moved, and they were diligent about calling and resending to our new address. I did have to pay up front (with a credit card), but I was very impressed with how professionally Mazda handled the situation.
The discs are 08 discs (07 came w/our 09 cx-9), but I believe that is typical... you are always buying last year's map data. Definitely an improvement over what we had, but of course this is just the current map data and doesn't correct the often flawed logic of the GPS system itself.

We have a 2008. The info on the disc says......... GP7A 66 766 A ...... 2007 ver 1 ..... software version 1200
Is this a CX-7 disc ?
If it is......Whats the difference ?
I checked with http://www.mazdanavigation.com and for my "surprise" the latest version of the maps were way back in 2008.1, and it is not enough that but they are out of stock?!? Obviously they do not see navigation system updates as a serious bussiness, Even their price tag is ridiculous and well above the average.....(199.99), I'm surprised they run out of stock at that price!
Is there any body around that have the latest disk and willing to share an iso image? Please PM me. I have 2006.2 version on my CX-9 2007....

With Toyota vehicles, which also use Denso NAVI system, the newest disc for them is 2009.1.
Mazda is simply way behind in map update.
Unless I see 2009.1 version of map, I will not update my 2006.x map on my 2008 CX9.
For me, there have been two occasions where the map was wrong. One was slightly off (for that matter Yahoo-Map was wrong also, but Google-Map was correct). The other was total wrong, thanks to new road constructed.

OK I just bought the new 2008 CX9 GT about 1 week ago and the CD version I have is MAZDA PART No. GP9A 66 DZ0 D. So I'm curious about the Map update...does it just update the streets? or does the whole navigation look/feel get updated? Im a little displeased that the NAV doesnt have a 3-d looking view. Is there any firmware upgrade to the system?
ceric
11-03-2010, 04:30 PM
The newest map version is 2009.v1.
Your 2010 should have the new map already.
2008- and 2009+ have different screen resolutions. Therefore, different disks due to GUI drivers.
Each update gives you corrections, new roads, more/updated POIs, etc.
Usually there is no changes to user interface.

For anyone who's upgraded lately, I'd love to have your older, cast-off DVD that you replaced. Moving to a 2007 or 2008 DVD would still be an improvement for me.
I have a 2007 CX9 with a "2006 ver 2" navigation DVD.
mazdanavigation.com says the "2009 ver 1" DVD is the most recent for my 2007 CX9, but they want $200 for it.
So if you've got a 2008 DVD lying around, let me know!
ceric
11-05-2010, 03:08 PM
My 2008 also had 2006.v2 map before I upgraded it to 2009.v1.
Therefore, my old one does not help you, either.
jabba
11-05-2010, 06:01 PM
I've said it before and will say it again, $200 is such a monumental rip-off. And the market knows it: when Google announced free turn-by-turn GPS directions in October 2009, Garmin and Tom-Tom stock went crashing 20% down.
But of course, with an integrated NAV system, you don't have a choice.....

I also just purchase a 2011GT (CX-9). It came with the exact same version. It seems that is the newest Mazda have available, although the Map DB was provided by NavTEQ in 2009 (yes, is almost 2 year old already). BTW, I try to use the TG18 66 DZO disk in another CX-9 (a 2008 GT that a friend owns) and it did not work. When the DVD is input, the system does not reject or mention data error, but the Map in the screen is totally scrambled, unused. So I guess they may not be compatible at all.

Greetings to all of you looking for an update DVD for you Nav system. I have one on Ebay, patcher1, since I just updated my own to the latest version offered. The $199.00 is so very rediculous but when you travel lots like we do it was needed. I do have "reserve" on my old 2009 dvd set of two but it is anywhere near the cost of the newest ones!Bid On Dudes! As an update on my "new" DVD, I was traveling in the San Diego county, Escondido to be exact, and found that a new street (almost two years old) has not been included on my new DVD! I guess that shows you how out-of-date these alledgedly updated DVD's are! Not so much!!!!! Hopefully this was just a slight oversight and most of the data will prove to be newer, but I am kind of doubting it!

Does anyone have the 2010 copyright DVD manufacture part number (Denso) that can be used in the 2008 CX-9? Also - I see a mention about Disc A and Disc B - are there 2 discs? Thanks!

So I have my Nav Disc backed up, via "Dvd Decrypter" and I was going to upload the .iso and the .mds file (version "E"). I started to upload it and realized it would take an hour or 2 just to get to 1% uploaded @ around 100-200kbps on sendspace.com. If anyone knows how I could get it uploaded in less than a days worth of time I will do it. I have the file on my external drive, usb 2.0, not sure if that makes a difference in upload speed.

I've got a 2007 Mazda CX-9 and my house isn't even on the nav system. So I went on eBay and bought a legit Map DVD. It says Mazda NA DVD Disc A - Part No TG18 66 DZ0 "for 2010MY-2011MY."
Sadly, it doesn't work. Apparently this is for newer model years. It works in that it shows me the Map and my house is there, but none of the search functionality.
I'm looking to trade or work something out for one of these https://www.mazdanavigation.com/store/item.aspx?ItemId=9&ModelId=38&Year=2007 for my model year.
Basically the latest for a 2007 CX-9.
Alternatively, is there a way to yank this whole PoS out and put in an aftermarket one?

Hey glucopilot, I have updated my 2009 CX-9's Nav system by purchasing the DENSO two pack DVD pack. I found that it wasn't that updated, having found several roads/streets that had been built about two years ago but they aren't on this so-called updated version! I have the original DVD's available if you are interested. Make me an offer I can't refuse!

Aren't we demanding.
I have a new 2011 CX-9 GT and the nav map dvd set that came with the vehicle is a 2010 version. Is there a 2011 version out? Also how much does a new dvd nav set cost, and do you have to buy them from the dealer?

schu0612.... this is your first post on here and first post is asking for a map update.
I would suggest going over to the "welcome" threads and introduce yourself.

Hey all. I have the 2007 version of the maps and would love something newer. I have a 2009 cx 7. I can burn them down with the info. My email is timjbaer@yahoo.com.
Thanks if anyone can.

EVERYONE LISTEN UP!!!
NO ONE IS GOING TO SEND YOU A LINK TO A MAP UPDATE, JUST ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN.
And first of all, if this is your first time here, it is just plain downright insulting to make your first post about trying to grab a free map update.
I tried uploading my nav dvd online, and then realized that at the 9 some gigabytes of size, it would literally take a full day to upload 1% of the dvd.
The reason I suspect is that for whatever reason, ISP's in general severely limit upload speeds compared to download speeds; I would suspect their reasoning is to attempt to THWART PIRACY.
I don't think someone is going to spend 100 days uploading a 9 gig DVD so that they can share it with you.
The way you should try to obtain a newer version is to find someone on here who has one, email them, and offer them a fee for backing up their library and sending you a duplicate.... just in case their car burns down and their house burns down too and they don't have another, then they can recover their backup that you have. (wink wink). The way it works is you send them money and a return address, and they burn you a library backup, again, should their car and house burn down, leaving them w/out a backup.

Amen brother!
Hi everyone!
I have a 2009 CX-7, and I think when I looked before, the Nav version was the 2007 DVD. From anyone who upgraded to the 2010-2011 version, is it worth the $200 to upgrade the map??
Another question is, does the dvd upgrade improve any of the outdated functionality and appearance of the older versions? I feel like whenever I'm in someone else's car, their factory Nav systems looks and operate much better than mine.
Thanks!

No. The map update, as the name suggests, is just for map data.
There might be some bug fixes for the loading software, but nothing visible in graphics to me.
Also, 2009+ models have higher-resol screen. The disc is different even though they might carry the
same version of map data. Watch out and be sure.

I couldn't resist jotting down a few thoughts on the subject of my own 09' nav. system by DENSO. I purchased directly from them the alledged "Updated" DVD's for my system only find that they are no where near as updated as I had hoped they would be. I have just read that the new CX 5 is equiped with a "TOMTOM" based nav. system so that shows that Mazda has finally gotten rid of the crap Denso systems for the new models!

Good news. Denso is owned by Toyota. I wonder what Toyota is gonna do?...
