How-To: Racing beat intake installation

Ok, so it's not really a racing beat, but a very close knockoff. Here goes nothin!
So the goal is to take the stock intake:

And make it look more like this:

I got the intake w/o brackets b/c they were selling it cheap lol, so I called up Racing beat and had them send me some brackets. RB decided they didn't want to send any hardware or instructions w/ the brackets, so I went to home depot, picked up a couple of steel bolts / lock nuts / washers and winged it. I had to do the bracket twice, because the lower bracket has a longer and shorter 'side', and if you have it flipped with the shorter side towards the rear of the car, it ain't going to fit. Yay no instructions! So step 1, remove stock plastic intake. You get something more or less like this:

Next, bolt the bracket in to 2 OEM holes in the unibody. The bolts were plenty long to use the stock bolts. Note the bracket in its wrong configuration:

Bolt everything together, and you end up with something that looks more or less like this:

End result: Sits right behind the headlight for extra cool air, it actually registered on the butt dyno, the whole system's louder now, and the exhaust crackles and pops a good bit more, which is fun :D

I've had the *real* RB intake for a while... and I keep telling myself theres no way i should be able to feel the diference... tho to this day i swear something feels different once i go over 4k rpms and it starts to growl.

and if your knockoff is anything like the real NA system... your bracket sucks. the bracket for the NB miatas are much nicer one pieces. and the NB intake is a much nicer overall piece, if your knockoff is anything like the real thing.

Tho your knockoff doesnt look like it has the right shape...

my guess is it just looks like an RB intake... (tho either way, the important part is where they stick the k&n cone... in the cold air where mazda intended...) as long as the cone is in that part of the engine bay... i'd guess
theres probably no actual measurable HP difference....

The bracket actually came FROM Racing Beat, sooooo you can talk to them about it lol. And the 1.8 intake is a little different than the 1.6. This is the same as the 1.6 RB intakes I've seen before, it's just not all shiny. The intakes for the 1.8 open up aren't as tight of a U as the 1.6s.

And that growl sure is nice ;)

Thanks. I think I'm just waiting to get a header. I'll heat-wrap that, and maybe fab up a heat shield out of some scrap metal to go around the U bend of the intake.

Good post! felt any gain? btw a good idea would be to buy a pipe that goes from the intake manifold until the MAF, that would be a good small gain tho plus some high growl! lol

Actually that part would cause you to lose power if you replaced it on an n/a car. mazda knew what they were doing and the plastic intake has a resonance chamber and it's been proven that replacing it with a straight pipe cause a loss of torque with no hp gain.

oh i know they make it, and i know people's 'Butt Dyno' says it makes power. but it's a placibo. On the dyno it's proven to make less torque on an n/a engine, and we all know it's torque that actually accelerates a car. And yes, it does sound 'better'.

That's a good reason for to not get the one from weapon R, btw i found this one out of the web, wondering if it gives the same gains as the RB

Nice write up on the RB clone.
I was just recently given an RB from a neighbor (minus the brackets and the wrong size K&N). RB sent me the brackets, but no hardware or instructions as well.

Has anyone stuck an AFM from an RX7, and slapped on their RB intake?

I just picked one up, and was rather curious as to the outcome.:)

the RB filter adapter isn't going to fit the RX7 AFM. The opening for the AFM is bigger than the outlet of the RB filter adapter
