Heh, I guess I sounded kinda dick-ish there.

Anyways, I envy you. I can't ride until I get home from work, which is another ~3 hours or so. And it'll be dark.

I miss being a kid, and having all day to ride.

you should adjust your lifestyle.
I'm 25,married,and have plenty of time to ride.
I just don't spend any time in front of a TV or anything like that.

even my computer time is minimal.

that would be nice, but it's hard enough just getting her to come out and watch.
only thing she likes about me riding is that I stay in shape.

I leave for work at 4:30 a.m., and I get home at 7 p.m., which leaves very little time for riding. By the time I finish up my home duties, we only get about a couple of hours to ride or so, and that's on good nights. When I get back to my EMT schooling, I'll have a LOT more time to ride, but time is tight right now, and I need to work (for the money savings), and work hard for right now, so that I can afford the rest of my school, and have enough when everything is said and done for a DP on a house/townhome. I would love to ride more now, but it just does not physically work with my schedule.

so i have a question that is probably pretty obvious to more experienced people but i'll ask anyways. with my old barely suspended bike i used to switch between standing and sitting while climbing and would stand the whole way down. with the full suspension bike if i stand climbing i bounce (unless it's locked out) so i've learned to sit the whole time. for the descent, should i sit ever? obviously on the very steep sections i'm over my rear tire but i pretty much stand whenever i don't have to pedal. by doing this there's less weight over the rear shock so it is bouncing more than compressing. should i be sitting more on downhills/quick non-pedaling sections so the rear shock is working more?

whenever riding uphill try to stay seated as much as possible. pedaling while standing up takes a ton of energy which can wear you out really fast. the times you should be standing are on a short steep ascent or if you are finishing a long climb and just want to muscle over the top and be done. also try not to go over any roots, or rocks while sitting down. when you hit it throws your whole body instead of your legs absorbing alot of the impact while standing.

as for downhill you usually want to stand unless youre just cruising. when standing you have a lot more control steering wise and more importantly you can shift your weight front or back for braking.

unfortunate for you,but not really.
you are just wise enough to choose what kind of life style you want, and you made the choice.
good choice too.

Oh, yeah, don't get me wrong, I still find as much time as I can to enjoy myself riding and doing other stuff... I would have been done with school earlier, but my parents elected NOT to pay for my college education, feeling that I needed a lesson in saving money (in retrospect, it was a good idea on their part). Luckily, it won't be long before I'm finished and on with my career. Until then, I have to work these long hours.

Actually with a full-suspension bike, you can ride much rougher stuff sitting down, and depending on the suspension design, sitting may be your best way to ride as that's the only way to activate the rear shock.

Just a thought.

jred321
10-03-2007, 08:07 PM
let's say the rear suspension was designed something like, oh i don't know, http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=33436 and there was something, oh let's say an old stone wall that isn't exactly smooth that you can carry a bit of speed into but not enough to jump the whole thing. sit down or stand up?

i have been standing and leaning back a bit mostly because if my front wheel gets caught on a rock sticking up i don't want to fly over the bars i want to be able to correct. on the other hand since there's little weight over the rear shock i assume it's mostly just bouncing around below me instead of absorbing the bumps

definitely stand up for something like that. because when youre going over an obstacle you shift foward alot then once youre over you shift back.

hop that rock! dont worry theres plenty of weight over the rear shock. just doesnt feel like it because youre not directly connected to the bike like you are sitting down. your legs absorb a lot of stuff involuntarily, unless youre really tense or stiff legged.

so I just picked up a vintage road bike....I say vintage, it's really ealry-mid 80's =)...for a sweet price. I'm having some trouble with the front brake though. When I apply the brake the two pads come together on the rim, but when I let go only one side releases and the other side stays on the rim. Is there something I can adjust to make this an easy fix? I can post pictures if I need to.

iracemine
10-18-2007, 09:18 AM
no. pb blast will mess it up. hit the actuall brake spring on the drive side of the bike down. that will make the non drive side brake arm lift up away from the rim. when you look head on (like that pic) you should have both springs level (typicaly).

edit: well after some good ole fashioned hitting the brakes are working as they should again. Took her for a ride today and I love the feel of this old bike. It's a little on the heavy side, but solid as a rock, a key feature when you're next to traffic going 45 MPH =)

any suggestions for new tires? i have the s-works 2bliss captains that came on my 08 stumpy. grip was never an issue in all conditions i've ridden in, wet, mud, rocks, leaves, and all combinations so i liked them. however, yesterday i noticed i could see the tube through the sidewall on one side on the front tire. i then decided to check out the rear and i could see threads in a few spots around the sidewall so i assume soon it'll wear through as well. i have been doing rides with a good amount of loose rock so i'm sure the sidewalls have seen their share of abuse but i would expect them to last longer than a month (1 month anniversary is the 28th). i was thinking of replacing them with http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/TI707A08-Panaracer+Fire+Xc+Pro+Tire.aspx but am open to suggestions

what are you running, like 15 psi?

my friend with an 07 stumpjumper upgraded to 2.5" in the front, 2.3" in the rear and absolutely loves it. he can roll over anything and has great traction.

jred321
10-22-2007, 04:35 PM
no, this was on ~40psi. if i ran that low i'd have so many flats riding wouldn't be fun. i've only had 1 so far. i'm assuming it's from the side of the tire rubbing along the rocks not from it being pressed down from low tire pressure

The Fire XC is a very popular tire, and the very fact that it's been around on the market for 4 years (forever in bike products) is a pretty good indicator that people still like 'em, so they kind of have to be good!

jred321
10-22-2007, 05:06 PM
on my old bike i still have a good dart front tire and ordered a new smoke for the rear before deciding not to fix that bike this year (speaking of tires that have been around forever, the front is still from 1994 :)). maybe i'll just throw those on to ride out the rest of the year and in the spring order a new set. biggest problem is i was thinking of doing a singlespeed conversion for the old bike as a winter project so if i steal its tires then it won't really work as planned (a cheap project)

this is a review of the area i rode in sat (different trail in the system but the description still fits). the last few rides i've ridden should be described pretty similarly, not a lot of dirt left but plenty of rocks

A buddy and I rode the route as described by Gary Thomann in bridrive's post above. I'll use the term "rode" loosely, since we probably hiked almost a third of the total 15 mile distance. In our estimation, the condition of many of the trails described in the route have degraded to unrideable- I'll try to describe the tough spots, that way people will know what they're getting themselves into.

Dacy Clearing to Bumps pond: Thomann states that most riders will have to push up this one- it's no joke http://forums.mtbr.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif . The trail surface has been severely eroded and there is very little dirt left. It is all jagged rocks and pretty steep. There were some good veiws of the lake along the way though. Probably a good 1/2 hour hike-a-bike to the rideable stuff at the top. The descent to Bumps Pond is fun though.

Bumps pond to Fishbrook pond: A lot of this trail was rideable. There were some wet spots to negotiate- deep mud holes that would have been difficult if not impossible to ride without ending up covered in black stinking mud. The trail at the north end of Fishbrook pond is difficult to follow. It was very technical and also wet in some areas. Thomann calls this " very exciting" singletrack. It was exciting to find the trail when you'd thought you'd lost it!

1500' "expert" rated descent to the lake shore http://forums.mtbr.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif : It wasn't terrifying- this was the best part of the ride. Steep and technical, rocky singletrack, and with a few really tough spots, but we rode about 95% of the entire 1.5 miles. It is very steep in sections, but also very fun.

Lake shore to Shelving Rock mountain: 99% unrideable and steep hike-a-bike climb http://forums.mtbr.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif . It is very steep and rocky, and will take you about 1/2 hour to hike up with your bike on your shoulder. Curse you Gary Thomann! This is the most physically demanding part of the ride. The descent from Shelving rock is fun.

Since we had one car, and parked in the Hogtown TH lot, we had to grind up the remaining 2.5 miles and 800' of vertical on Shelving Rock road http://forums.mtbr.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif .

It was a tough "ride". Personally, I'd prefer a little more riding and less hiking. If I wanted to hike, I'd have taken a lightweight day pack and left my bike at home.

OK, WTF??

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Georgia has declared a state of emergency over its worst drought in decades and appealed to President George W. Bush for federal aid, newspapers said on Sunday.

"We are experiencing the single worst drought in Georgia history." said Perdue, who declared the state of emergency for 85 of the state's 159 counties.
Much of the state is experiencing a drought classified as "extreme," which happens once every 50 to 100 years, according to climatologists.

We're in the midst of a super drought, my Fall Break is this Thursday and Friday, and what's the forecast for the next 5 days?

I took my son (2 yrs. 4 months old) to an elementary school nearby yesterday to try to get him to pedal/ride his trike. He's got this one, which we picked specifically because it's RWD and puts the pedals below him on the frame instead of out front on the wheel like a regular trike. It also converts to a "bike" by sliding the rear wheels in next to each other, inside the rear frame.
http://images.smarter.com/300x300x15/41/98/384498.jpg

He did well keeping up with the pedals (it's a fixie) when we rolled down hill, but he didn't do very well pedaling it himself! :( He did, much to my surprise, figure out the steering yesterday though. It was pretty cool to see.

Anyway, for me, this meant a chance to break out the trials bike, and roll around on it for a while, much of the time hanging off the side pulling the munchkin along by his handle bar! When he got tired of riding, we went 'round to the front of the school and he ran around while I worked on riding up and down the stairs and walls in front of the school. It was a nice way to spend an hour or two with the boy and the bike!

He also really liked seeing me do tricks and laughed and smiled when I jumped on and off of things. It was a bit upsetting when I'd blow a move and he'd laugh and say "it's funny daddy." :( Pwnt, by a two year old.

Just bought one of these 2 weeks ago. I've been riding mountain bikes forever but it's my first road bike. Love it. But so pissed it's cold now. (Well, cold for Nevada.) But I go on rides after work if it's above 50.

lol, below 50 is pretty chilly. brrr

what stops me from riding isn't temperature but snow. i tried riding at the beginning of the winter when there was a light coating on the ground and it sucked. it's too rocky around here to ride on the snow

Ha -- is supposed to be a warm 58 in Vegas this January. (I am a pussy when it comes to cold weather now. :) ) I can even ride up to Red Rock where it will be a few degrees cooler. It's not as much the cold but breathing in the cold.... I tend to snot everywhere and start feeling asthmatic.

Pardon my ignorance, but when you ride a triathlon bike (in a triathlon) you're probably not going to climb much... so the geometry is more geared towards being aerodynamic and pushing harder on flat ground, correct?

It really depends on the triathlon course-- some courses have some intense hill sections and sustained gradients, but the cycling link of a tri course is typically flatter than a road bike course.

Out of the saddle riding really is no big deal on a tri bike. I find myself riding much faster on my tri-bike than I was ever able to ride on my past road bikes. It really is night and day.

I ride Mountain pedals on my road bike, and ride in mountain shoes.

I prefer the double-sided entry, and the ability to step off of the bike without fear of falling on my ass! I tanked in the street years ago when I had road shoes because I tried to push off from a stop and the hard, slick sole went out from under me. I'm not racing, and even after 10+ years working in bike shops, I haven't been able to find an advantage to road shoes that outweighs the ability to walk!

I know what you mean,I am running 8"X28.5",with no spacers and a red neck stem
I think taller feels best, but inhibits a lot of things I do,like bunnyhops wallrides, and hitting hips.

....BTW,if you ever decide to cut down those forks, you have to cut the compression bolt in halve too. just a heads up.

You get used to it. I tanked the first time I went on a serious ride after trying to lock back in. Haven't tanked since though. I really do notice the difference though-- I could never ride free-shoed again. However, walking's a bitch.... but you should be cycling anyway, not walking, right?

Free-shoed? What do you mean?

I wasn't talking about tanking because of clipless pedals, I was talking about going down on slippy-ass hard-soled road shoes! I've been riding clipless for 13 years on road and off, but after a dozen rides or so on road shoes, I went back to mountain shoes all the time! They're not appreciably any less stiff, I don't care if they're heavier, and I can get off of the bike. :D

Just found this thread.

Growing up I rode all BMX, even took my BMX trail riding and lots of street riding.

Finally decide to grow up a bit. I've been riding bikes all my life, but am a newb when it comes to a bike with more then one speed. Well the wife decided she wanted to start riding with me, so we both got mountain bikes that way we could ride street and trail. She got a Trek WSD 4300, and I settled on a Gary Fisher Wahoo (the disc brake model). I like the all black look.

And for the winter months, picked up the Minoura (JDM! hahaha) rim trainer. Which works surprisingly well (I had some serious doubts). I chose this one cause it attaches to the rim so there is no need to swap the nobby tires.

I know I dont have the best setup but it has worked well so far.

Yeah I hear fluid feels the most realistic, but the only way I could get a rim model is the Minoura magnetic model. May not be real but using the gears and the 7 mag resistance settings it can push back harder then I can at times. Still working on building up my legs, I guess. Been out of riding too long.

I hear ya, I use mine to simulate rides in a specific HR zone, so being able to get a specific resistance is key for me.

I just learned to ride rollers about a month ago. I can ride a 58cm frame no problem but my road bike is a 62cm (also slightly skinner tires.. which makes a difference) and i can ride that uncomfortably (not too stable at that height yet) IMO rollers will give you better balance and reaction time. This helps esp for mountain biking.....

Last year I did three triathlons as part of a team, being the designated cyclist. This year, I want to finish at least one myself. I'm planning on signing up for the New Jersey Bassman (0.5 mi swim/29 mile bike / 4.1 mile run). The 39-year old knees might not make it through the run, but I'll walk that if I have to. But I've never swum before...

Just started earlier this week, trying to go 5-6 times per week between now and the event. I think I look like a squirrel that's been tossed in the water right now...

LMAO, you should consider renting a wetsuit for the race.

It depends upon the triathlon and the regulations, but some will allow swimmer's snorkels (dynamic snorkels, not divers' snorkels) for the swim link. Check in about the regs. That might help you out tremendously for your first time.

I have yet to be in a race where snorkels (of any kind) have been allowed. Most races allow wetsuits unless the water temp is too warm.

also, if someone hasn't done much swimming and is potentialy worried about a half mile open water swim, a wetsuit could help a lot with speed, boyancy (safety), and body position. For $35 dollars, it can be worth it (and also help you decide weather or not to buy one)

gone_fishin
02-21-2008, 04:14 PM
Yep, wetsuits are a must for open, cold water swims. With regard to the swimmer's snorkel, at least he can train with one for a time period before the race itself. It helps tremendously with learning proper technique. But I'd advise training without it for the two weeks prior to restup-- the transition will not be a walk in the park.

Very nice Felt. Very nice.

I got out on the mountain bike this weekend. Sadly, the trails had been rebuilt since my friend was there last, and they kind of suck now. It was nice being on the bike again, but I wanted more challenge. Instead of going mountain biking, we went for a ride in the woods. LAME. :(

Also, those wheel lights are $4.99! That's awesome! If I still had people to go night riding with, I'd put a set on my mountain bike just to freak people out!

def don't get any scratches on that frame or it'll stress and break soon after. that stuff is like glass, fairly strong until you create a weak point.

I completed my first Half Ironman distance Triathlon yesterday.

1.2 mile swim = 32 minutes - 1:31 per 100 yards (I have spent a lot of time swimming in the past year)

56 mile bike = 2:36 min - 21.8 mph (it was actually 56.6 miles)

13.1 mile run = 2:25 - 11 minute miles (I am fat and can't run for shit)

Total time - 5:40 including transitions

High points;

Fast bike course
My heart rate was in range the whole time
I finished (this was 2 times that longest distance race that I have ever done)

Low points;
The water (lake michigan) was 55 degrees
I had a huge blister (2" across) on my left heel for the last 8 miles of the run)
It got pretty hot and humid during the run

All in all, it was an awesome day. I am pretty sore and stiff today but it feels like I accomplished a huge goal of mine (I have been training for this for a long time)

next year, full Iron Distance 2.4 mile swim/112 mile bike/26.2 mile run. now that will be an accomplishment.

oh yeah, and my trophy from yesterday...

It's a Burley "Rock 'n Roll" tandem, circa 1994!

I am at least the 3rd owner, but it's in pretty great shape.
Current set-up is all Suntour: F&R cantilever brakes plus a rear drum brake, 3X7 gearing, and thumb shifters!

I'm planning to upgrade to 9-speed, grip shifters and V-brakes, I'll probably get rid of the drum brake for simplicity and so I can replace the rear wheel with one that is 9-speed spacing with quick-release. Once I have a quick-release, we can hook up my son's trailer.

I'm pretty excited! :D

If you're up in NoVA sometime, I'd be happy to go out trials riding with you! I'm not that good, but I've got some skill. ;)

Also, an update on the BRB (BigRedBike) plan. Keeping the drum, they're used on tandems as a drag brake to slow the bike on long descents. This bike has the front and rear cantis set-up to work on the right brake lever, and the drum set up on the left. More modern tandems use a conventional layout for the rim brakes and hook up the drum brake to a thumb-shifter so you can just put it on to provide a certain amount of braking all the way down the hill!

I'll be setting this bike up with GripShifters anyway, so I'll use one of the existing thumbies for the drag brake and put V-brakes on, operated normally. I'm going to have fun ordering parts tomorrow at work! :D

Increased risk & recovery time butttttt, I still ride like crazy be it mud or pavement but my focus is survival, fitness & fun. I have 9 bikes to spread it around on, the wife has 4 so gotta stay in one piece so they all get ridden. I ain't the fastest, or extremist, or slowest so I'm right where everyone else is...in the middle somewhere. None of that shit matters once you figure out there's always someone faster & slower anyway so it's all about fun & fitness. I win every time based on that.

anyone know how to figure out a stem's clamp diameter? i got my old bike working over the weekend. it's a steel frame from ~1994 so its layout is very different from the bikes of today. the stem that's on it is very long and flat so you're very stretched out. i want to put a shorter stem with a little bit of a rise to give a more comfortable and maneuverable riding position. this looks good http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/ST295A05-Easton+Ea50+Stem.aspx but i couldn't find a size stamped on the old one.

i want to eventually convert that bike into a singlespeed and after riding it on bike paths this weekend i see that it's not something i'll want to ride as-is for any extended period of time and the long flat stem limits maneuverability a lot compared to my stumpjumper

Older bikes often have 1" steer tubes/headsets on the forks, vs. the newer 1+1/8" standard used now on both road and mountain bikes. It's not easy to find 1" stuff anymore, unfortunately. Check with your local bike shop if you don't know what size you've got.

spacers are dangerous. this is not the spot on your bike to cheep out. you might what to buy on line anyway to find a large selection of one inch stems. you'll need a time machine to find a large selection of one inch stems at your LBS or just buy it online if you know what angle and length you want.

Hayes Nine hydraulic brakes (8-inch front rotor, 6 out back)
New pads
SRAM Trigger shifters
WTB Mutano-raptors (2.4 front), WTB Timberwolf (2.5 rear)
Crank Brothers 50/50xx platformsI could probably use a new wheel-set, but I think I'm better off saving that money. If I stay dedicated and get serious enough about riding again, I'm going to treat myself to a new ride at the end of the year: Giant Trance X2

So I have a small obsession for wanting a motorcycle, but that obsession can't be fulfilled for several reasons, so instead I wanted a Mountain Bike and finally got one!

I've only been out riding a few times and I absolutely love being on a bike again in god knows how long! There are a couple things I need to upgrade like now though. Figured i'd get the input from you guys who may know more about it than I do.

Locking Cable
I know there's a vinyl locking cable, a chain locking cable and one of those aluminum U-Bars. Which is typically the best? I'd imagine the U-Bar style is the best but I can't seem to figure out where you'd put that on the bike to store while you're riding.

Seat..
My biggest complaint is probably the same complaint as anyone. The seat is so damn uncomfortable. With every rut and bump in the road, that thing sends shocks straight up my spine and hurts the obvious over a short ride. I want to get a better seat, but don't know if I should go straight to the largest cushioniest seat available or what? Any tips here?

Gloves
The grips on the bike are never designed for comfort. My hand has an imprint of hard rubber designs left on my palm every time I ride and it's just definitely uncomfortable. Any suggestions?

I'm ready to just go the shop who tuned the bike up for me and see what they have, but they are a smaller mom&pop shop and I'm sure everything they have is top dollar with the limited amount of traffic they get.

I don't think that I own a bike lock... I never would leave my bike anywhere that I would have to worry about someone grabbing it.

Invest in a good pair of riding shorts first, then see if you still need a new seat.

Check out some new grips and get some gloves... they are cheap.

My riding shorts are air jordan dry-fit's. They feel great and I have no problem.
what he meant was get a pair of real riding shorts. they'll have padding in the crotch area. this makes it so you have extra padding between you and the seat and makes the ride much more comfortable. basketball shorts don't have that padding

I've done a couple club rides, but mostly just century/race training. I want to be ready to start racing by Memorial Day (Quad Cities Crit) next year, and I have my first century this coming Sunday.

I ride every day, son. In fact, we're doing 60 miles this morning. Since, you know, I have no job to go to.

I am thinking about going back to school to be a teacher so that I can have summers off for more training...

trek has there demos of the next year in august. they give us all a trek lime to ride from the convocation center to the restraunt that is like a mile away (about 800-1000 people). its a neat day test riding new bikes and checking out all the new stuff to sell next year. then when we are done eating and drinking we get to ride them back!

Just riding from Orland to like Monee-Manhattan Road and back, or out to Vollmer road with some very mixed up suburban routes. We scrapped the long ride Monday, since we all have the same haggard cold. I might be down for riding Friday or something, but just call me. We MAY end up riding the lakefront path tomorrow morning at like 5:30, since my buddy has to get used to his new TT bike for the Chicago Tri this weekend. And I may end up swapping my OCR for a TCR (full carbon) tonight.

30mph winds straight out of the South = lose. I think I only averaged like 17, and only because I was pushing 28-32 with the tailwind on the way home, lol.

Ross, will I see you Sunday at the Accenture?

Sorry, triathletes are treated like the red headed step children of cycling... We don't get invited to that stuff.

No, but if you have a bike without aero bars, you should come out to next Tuesday's crit practice in Matteson.

I did 121 miles for my birthday on saturday - great weather, great route, great ride. took off sunday/monday and did a 30 mile recovery ride today.

Trying to decide what the next mileage challenge should be. I've done 127 miles in a day, 600 loaded touring miles in 6 days... need something new. A 200k brevet would add a time factor. The RAIN ride (Ride Across Indiana) is 160 miles from Illinois to Ohio in one day. TOSRV is back-to-back centuries. I've heard guys talk about a 24-hour challenge where you basically ride as far as possible in 24 hours. Undecided what to do next....

Maybe when I get a couple kids out of college and have a disposable income again, I'll start a new hobby. But for now I'm equipped for road riding.

Byron's is fucking awesome. Sidewinder is pretty good, too -- I burned a half-gallon of their 8% blend, kept a tune, but ran a little warmer than I liked.

Oh cool thread. I never saw this one. I do traithlons ( in fact I did one this morning) 1 mile swim, 20 mile bike, 5 mile run. Fun stuff. The swim sucked. Water was so dark and cold but whatever. Couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

Ive got a Cervelo Dual with vision handlebars. Not the best bike but I got a killer deal on it off ebay. Alwasy fun smoking people with 8 thousand dollar bikes :).
