Hi everyone!

I totally new here and I am no mechanic. I enjoy doing simple repairs and body work but I have no plan to make a career out of it.

I own a Protege 2003 es 2.0 l that I bought new in sept 2003. I have read lots of topics on your board but I have not seen what brings me to post this.

I have used http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113741 to change the rear brake pads. It was a good thing 'cause that hidden allen screw would have stompted me. Having completed that, I went for a test drive. Every thing works fine, pedal is soft and good, braking is perfect, no odd sounds, park brake works ok at 5 clicks up...

But this is new: When transmission is in PARK, a 'click' sound comes from under center counsol\brake lever area with each individual pressing of the brake pedal.

No click when in other gears, no clik while on drive and braking...

Just one clik when on park and pressing on the brake !

Can anyone help this noobie ?

I think it's the switch/solenoid that prevents the transmission from coming out of park without the brake applied.

Tom03es, thank you for your input.

Indeed it does sound like a relay\noid clicking.

What do I do to fix that ?

I have talked to my Mazda dealer. He says it a normal sound.

But it seems to me either it wasnt there before or it was so soft that I never noticed it. Anyone can point me to a solution or to a diagram that shows where this part is located ?

the sound is from the "unlocking" of the lock that allows you to go from Park into drive.

When you push in the brake the "click" is the sound of the lock being released.

but why is it more noticible now... I've had the car since 2003 and if it was there it wasnt this noticible...

perhaps since doing the brakes you were more cautious about things and now noticed it... Mine does it and always has...

Changing the rear pads wouldnt affect it.

Thanks for all.

If the interlock solenoid mounting is a little loose, every time it operates it could move a little bit and make extra noise. You could take the console apart and check to see if it's properly bolted on. If the click bugs you, you could put a little foam or felt or something around it to absorb the noise.
