Yeah i dont know if this is a stupid question or not but what sort of performance increase would rims give you.
I know less weight = more power and i assume all aftermarket rims are lighter than my steelies
and i guess i am looking at 16" ones maybe

It's not safe to say that all aftermarket rims are lighter than stock. The majority probably will be, but it's best to check the weight before you buy. You will get better performance from lighter wheels. Acceleration braking and steering get easier with the reduced rotating mass.

What he said^
Generally speaking, a cheap wheel is a heavy wheel. That isn't always the case as a lot of Rota's wheels are affordable and light. You would also be surprised at how light stock steelies can be.

good luck trying to find something lighter than mazda stock alloys - my stock 16" ES rims are about 16 lbs each. most aftermarket 16's are in the 18-20 lbs range. and you CAN feel a difference going from heavy to light rims. my winter set-up is about 45 lbs each wheel, and my summer set-up is 37 lbs each. i tell you, every year, i really look forward to spring.
