Captain KRM P5
04-19-2007, 03:31 PM

junya1985

The next question.

GhostMercury

subs.. I always wanted one, i might just pick one up

GhostMercury
04-20-2007, 01:20 AM
lol ken what ever these are im sure you will be selling a couple soon lol

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 01:28 AM
the problem therein lies in the fact that when Dexter and I made these, no one bought them and many balked at the price. they are time consuming custom pieces and we charged accordingly for them.

http://www.msprotege.com/members/Captain%20KRM%20P5/screen-s.jpg

we had a few options - VGA or just RCA inputs, touchscreen versus non-touch screen, etc etc

LinuxRacr
04-20-2007, 11:53 AM
The screen alone is the bulk of the price, and then the labor is pretty time-consuming for bondo, sanding and painting. Not to mention the price of the dash trim from Mazda! (boom05)

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 12:21 PM
so what were you guys selling those for Ken?

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 03:23 PM
fully decked out models came with the following options;

- 7 inch Xenarc LCD screen
- Touchscreen Pointer Control
- 1 VGA input
- 2 RCA (red/white/yellow) inputs
- new molded trim piece from Mazda
- fiberglassed/resin composite for seamless integration and look of the screen with the dash.

price on a model like that would be no less than $899 shipped. considering the time and cost involved in making one, i cannot see charging any less.

now, if you wanted a cheaper screen - without VGA, no touchscreen, etc - the price could come down a bit, say $200 less.

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 04:09 PM
Dude.....that is not bad. But the non touch screen isn't bad at all either. Dang, that's real cheap for the parts and labor.

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 04:21 PM
thanks, like i said, i will make them for anyone who wants one

GhostMercury
04-20-2007, 04:28 PM
hmm so basically you hook a computer up to the screen? or is it its own computer. i might be interested in this but not for a while cause i wana get rims and tires first. but i still wana learn more about it

LinuxRacr
04-20-2007, 04:32 PM
Damn, the can of worms is officially open!

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 04:41 PM
Ok so.....I'm a newb at this....what if you get the screen w/out VGA but with touchscreen?

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 06:54 PM
it is not possible to get a touchscreen without VGA. the whole point is being able to use it as a computer interface at that point. how would you use touchscreen without interfacing a PC :)?

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 07:20 PM
.....touche Ken.....touche, lol. Told you I'm a newb at this stuff, lol.

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 07:21 PM
haha its all good man

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 07:26 PM
So these are strictly special orders? So you can put screens in there that are not touch screen right? Lol, this actually got my wife interested...and that's a first.

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 08:42 PM
yes these you would have to order with me personally. i would want to talk to the potential customer personally beforehand. and yes its possible to get the following screen combinations;

- RCA input only
- RCA input, VGA input
- RCA input, VGA input, touchscreen
- VGA input only
- VGA input, touchscreen

radio would need to be relocated. no you cannot use a stock headunit. :)

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 09:39 PM
Lol. Honestly, I just use mine for music and that's it. I would just want the screen for like a navigation system....plus from the pic....they look real nice.

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 10:52 PM
you would want the following setup, which is what i run in my protege;

- mini-PC with DVD-ROM and large hard drive, hidden under the seat
- microsoft streets and trips with GPS reciever
- molded dash trim/screen with VGA and touchscreen

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 10:59 PM
How much would that setup run if you had to do the screen w/ VGA and touchscreen? The other stuff I can get from my friend who knows a helluva lot about computers.

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 11:08 PM
$899 shipped as that would be the cadillac of molded touch screens :) a few people had them here years ago and posted very positive reviews

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-20-2007, 11:21 PM
I would have to get the money little by little. I just got some big bunch of cash revently, but I need to buy some things(HID kit, tires) but if you said this is by special orders than I don't think you "run out" of materials. I also have a couple of things I can sell so maybe I can get more cash for this. I will let you know man. Oh by the way, pizzimp shop, lol.

Captain KRM P5
04-20-2007, 11:45 PM
HIDs won't be as sexy as this screen, baby ;)

thanks for the kind remarks

i did have one of those but i missed my glove box too much and thats where the microtech is now

My Haltech used to be there, because I couldn't put it where Juan put his at, due to my TechEdge WB02 controller being there, but now I've taken that out, and have a AEM WB02 Gauge Type now, so the Haltech moved, and the glove box became my computer. The center console is now my glove box, as I don't have a whole lot to put in there. :D

I built one of these prob 4-5 years ago or so, and I know how much of a PITA it is to get these things to look perfect. It took me several professional paint jobs and hours of sanding to get mine to look like it was OEM. So paying someone and being done with it is pretty nice - the price isnt bad either.

Here are pics of my setup before I sold it.. I have another Protege5 on the way so I will be building another one:

I have been interested in this for a while and may be looking to pick something up here in the near future. I am looking for something to play dvds and music. GPS is a plus. Wouldnt mind having that also. Could one of theese work with tuning like with a laptop? I have a datalogging cable. Basic usb I beleive. I am goiing to be buying a new laptop very soon.If I could get some kind of setup like the indash you make that would do the job for tuning also that would be awesome.

Something that you all may also want to consider (that will definitely drive the cost up) is the transreflective upgrade. Not sure if Ken offers that yet, but with the transreflective upgrade, direct sunlight won't flush out the screen, and you will be able to see it as clear as if it were night. Here is a basic comparison: Click Me (http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/lcd-display/77276-transflective-upgrade-results.html)

GhostMercury
04-30-2007, 12:21 PM
yea i know how you feel. well in a different way cause my gf has prom coming up and i have to go so that is taking all of my money. (im 19 just so you know, so to catch a predator doesnt come knocking on my door lol) plus im trying to save for rims and tires also. so im broke as shit rite now

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-30-2007, 12:27 PM
Well I'm 20 going on 21 in 2 weeks(WOOT MOTHERTRUCKIN' WOOT! LOL) but yeah the wedding is like a damn warp hole...I just want to get it done and over with. Its a special day but the stress before it is horrible.
