The August issue of Road & Track has a tiny blurb about the possibility of Chrysler resurrecting the Challenger using the LX platform currently dedicated to the 300/Magnum/Charger trio. A concept is reportedly currently in the works for a debut at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. The coupe would theoretically be easy to design and build and could be, if priced correctly, the first real competition for Ford’s new Mustang. R&T does point out, however, that the plant building the current crop of LX cars is at full production, so adding another model to the assembly line might be difficult.

I wasn’t too sure about the copyright laws concerning the artist’s rendering of the Challenger in R&T, so rather than reproduce it here and get sued I pulled a photoshop job by Doug Schramm off of Autospies instead. I actually like this rendering better than R&T’s, even though it’s oozing retro from every orifice.

Now that is sex on wheels....

It'll prolly have 4 doors by the time it makes it to the market.

Rising to the Challenger: Detroit auto show debut for Dodge muscle coupe concept

To all those purists who still can’t forgive Dodge for building a four-door Charger, here’s your answer: the 2006 Dodge Challenger concept. The Dodge boys released a sketch of the car to the world, but we obtained these exclusive spy photos of the car, which will premiere at the North American International Auto Show in January in Detroit.

http://autoweek.com/files/weekart/2005/1121/challenger_rear.jpg

Challenger draws on the 1970 model as the icon of the series, says Tom Tremont of Chrysler’s Pacifica studio in California. But instead of merely recreating that car, designers tried to build the Challenger most people see in their mind’s eye, without imperfections like the tucked under wheels and long front overhang of the old car. At the same time, the concept incorporates distinctive Challenger cues like the rear fender kick, wide mouth front end, functional hood scoops and rectangular exhaust tips.

Built on a shortened Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger chassis (116-inch wheelbase vs. 120 inches), the Challenger gets a 6.1-liter Hemi hooked to a six-speed manual transmission with a pistol grip shifter.

All that’s left to ponder is “will they build it?” With all the hardware in place and a primed marketplace, we can’t see why Dodge wouldn’t rise to this challenge.

I'm happy for the people the grew up with these cars, but sometime I think the auto industry is moving backwards. Let the past go. I'd rather rebuild a 1970 with modern performance technologies (ie - fuel injection) than buy a new one that will never be as cool as the original. But that's just my opinion.

i think its great that his car has the 6 speed manual. if they produce it, that means you could probably just bolt it up to any of the other platform mates. imagine a srt-8 300c with a 6-speed or even the charger srt-8 with a 6-speed. i still love this car though

Good call ! The 'Cuda' definitely was the sexiest (70'/71'). The Barracuda had a shorter wheelbase but was prety much the same as the Challenger though.

Yup. The '71 Cuda (quad headlights, gills) is the sexiest muscle-car ever made.

I wouldn't kick a Challenger out of bed, though.

Although retro is getting done, most of them are failing at it. Personally, the only car thats worth going retro was the Mustang, and the sales are showing it. 1 out of every 2 sports cars is a Mustang, and thats what it comes down to. Ford may make some stupid mistakes, but that was NOT one of them.

Challenger all the way, but we've been analyzing these pics over on srtforums/srtsyndicate and they're are quite a few attributes that make them look like photochopped images. The images seen on autoblog and autoweek .com"" look real for the most part but these images seem a bit fake, but then again I could be wrong. I love for this version to come out. The magnum is available in a manual, isn't it? I'm reserving judgement until we see the production version. There have been tons of concept models that I've like and then been dissapointed by the production car, so we'll just have to wait and see. I sure do hope it makes it to production though.

Often when doing design studies they'll make a model where there are differences between the right and left sides in order to compare them and come to a final decision.

Just as was said, they make the car different on each side to decide on different attributes. Those are pics of a clay model, it's not a real car. In the last pic it's pretty easy to see the wood blocks holding it up.

anarchist- The Magnum is not available in a manual.

I talked to a guy here at a 5 star dodge dealer and he told me they might have an optional new 6.4 hemi with 500hp available for the challenger. He also said it WILL have a 6 speed. This is, of course, only if it is produced. I thinking if this goes into production that chevy will really consider bringing back a muscle car or two. I hoping they do since I own a camaro and I would love to see it come back.

BlkZoomZoom
12-26-2005, 04:42 PM
Yeah the 6.1l is 425hp and the 6.4l is 505hp. Not sure what the production car is going to get (if they produce it) their were rumors of the 6.1L.

You can get both Hemis in a crate motor form. I think the 6.4L would go nice in my truck. Anybody wanna get me one?

I had a 1970 dodge Charger in highschool. It had a 383 bored 30 over with an edelbrock high rise manifold and a Carter AFB 4bbl. 727 tranny with a shift kit. Passed everything but a gas station.

Any way I was dissapointed with the new Charger. They made it with 4 doors and gave it funky headlights and tail lights.

Now this car coming out has me looking back at MOPAR again. This will give the new Mustang a run for its money.

See cars like these really makes me miss my charger. Dumb ass here traded it for a highly modified 86 Iroc-Z

I know this is off topic but here are some pictures of the Charger when my Dad had it. One of his customers wanted a picture of the General Lee with her kids on the hood. So she gave a copy of that picture to my dad back in the 1980's.

http://www.msprotege.com/members/rednecks_r_us/Charger%20pics/My%20General%20Lee%20(Large).jpg

Here is a picture of me as a kid with my Dad's General Lee. After the Dukes show got cancelled our car got vandalized. Suger in the tank and keyed and such. So my Dad parked it the back yard for several years.

In 1990 he told me if I could get it running I could have it. Guess what I got it running and painted it Hemi Orange. The paint job was done in Mexico since I lived in Yuma, AZ.

Now if I could find somebody to photoshop those kids out of the first pic that would be cool. but I'll start another thread on that.

I like this new remake better than the mustang, charger, or camaro. The carbon fiber is a nice touch.

I showed the Road and Track magazine article with the Challenger to some older car guys at work and they loved it. Their biggest reason was that it has the same body lines as the Barricuda and even the dash, seats, shifter look similar to the 70 'Cuda interior. The only negative thing they could say was that it didn't have a posi-trac like the original because only one wheel was spinning in the burnout pic. One of them actually called Dodge after seeing the magazine to find out about preorders.

I know I will get yelled at or thought of as a youngster of sorts, but I don't like it. Sure they did a good job making it look old school and gave it plenty of power. But I see it and I just think "old, clunky, heavy". The design is old and we have moved on from those days.

I agree that they would be stupid not to produce it as those guys who grew up with muscle cars are finally getting old enough to afford these retro cars. So have your fun, but its not for me.

Love the car. This is how you do retro folks. The new Charger is ugly. The new mustang looks like a poor chicks car..

as for the Old school dukes of hazzard car - priceless. Just watched the movie last week and it brought back memories. Not to mention jessica..... I don't think I'd drive around in a car with that flag on the roof these days, but I still love the car.

thats HAWT.......despite the looks of the neon, chrysler makes some very attractive cars

If Daimler never bought Chrysler, the boys wearing Mopar orange in Auburn Hills would NEVER have found the balls to design and produce the iron they're putting out as of late (300C, Magnum, Charger, et al).....

I absolutely love the looks of this new challenger. It's sweet. I hope they can make it look that mean in production. I also hope they can design some handling and braking into it, unlike the old muscle cars. :) My list of next cars might be expanding from just the MX-5 and Mustang Gt.

I would hope that 30 years of manufacturing / materials innovation would mean that the new challenger would not be the over weight POS handling car like the original.

I'm looking forward to seeing this car in final form. Not that I'd buy it....afterall it is a dodge :)

NEW YORK -- The Chrysler group thinks it has created a viable business case for turning the Dodge Challenger concept into reality. The plan relies on niche volume, V-8 power and pricing above the Ford Mustang.

A key element is the belief that escalating gasoline prices won't sway enthusiasts from lusting after the Hemi-powered, rear-drive performance coupe.

Gasoline prices are "a factor in a lot of our discussions," said Joe Eberhardt, the Chrysler group's executive vice president of global sales and marketing.

"I wouldn't say (that) with Challenger because that is going to be a car probably for the enthusiast - probably a second or third car, probably not competing with everyday transportation."

That strategy would imply total or near total reliance on V-8 engines. That would be a striking contrast to Ford's Mustang, a mass-market vehicle offered with a range of models and powertrains - vehicles intended for everyday transportation. Last year Ford sold 160,975 Mustangs, of which only 30 percent had V-8s.

A decision on whether to build the Challenger is expected this year.

Chrysler does not have capacity to build the Challenger in its Brampton, Ontario, plant alongside the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger and Magnum. The Challenger would share a platform with those models.

That means a separate production site would be needed. But, since the Challenger would not be a mass-volume product, a dedicated plant would not be required.

"Emotionally, we are all there; we all say (let's build it) tomorrow," Eberhardt said. "But sometimes you've got to sit back and put a lid on your emotions and say, 'OK, is there a sustainable business case?' Or is it going to be another one year hot and then demand trails off fairly quickly?

"I think we are fairly comfortable now that we have found a formula where we think we can sustain it" profitably for several years, said Eberhardt, who was interviewed at the New York auto show this month.

The Challenger concept, which was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, draws on styling cues first seen on the 1970 Challenger. In those days the Challenger went head to head with the Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in price, size and horsepower.

The Challenger concept packs a 425-hp, 6.1-liter Hemi V-8. It's also 4.7 inches wider and 10.2 inches longer than the 2006 Mustang.

Said Eberhardt, the Challenger "is a larger car, and I think it will be (priced) a little above" the Mustang.

Priced above the Mustang? Who will buy it? All the folks that said the Dodge Charger should have been a 2 door, as long as they didn't already get a Charger! Also, possibly Dodge guys for whom there's been nothing interesting to buy for many, many years.

Generally, I agree though, it's too much money and kind of like the last time the muscle cars died, gas prices are rediculous, and the market is swinging hard toward compact cars with good fuel efficiency.

people seem to forget Ford sells mustangs. Alot of mustangs. if pitched as an alternative, Chrysler could sell as many or more challengers. i think a straight six or v6 for a base model would be acceptable. plenty of the old mopars had durable six cylinders that have performance followings to this day. part of the appeal of those muscle cars was that * ding ding ding asshole * they were financially obtainable to the masses!!! pricing this car into the upper spectrum is out of character for the car :(

I see Dodge selling the Challenger with the base 3.5 V6 with 250hp and 250lb-ft in the both SE and SXT and where the R/T would have the 5.7 HEMI V8 rated at 349hp and with Multi-Displacement System. It needs to be around the same price as both the V6 and GT Mustang models. Thats why Ford sells so many Stangs is because the pricing is right. I just hope GM prices the Camaro and next GTO in the mid $20s.

i totally agree with you on that. my boss and i were having a conversation about the new challenger and he absolutely will buy one even if it is in the 40k range. he is a mopar guy and owns a 60 something charger rt & a plymouth satalite. the new charger has styling straight out of the late 60s without a bit of modern style and thats what he and other muscle guys have been wanting for decades. gas prices wont be a factor here because this will be a weekend car. this car isnt like the charger/accord/camary/impala blah blah blah

Look at the targeted Demographic. Baby Boomers who owned the old Mopars. These are the people who now have ALOT of money to invest into something that will give them that "youth" feel again.

My uncle that just passed was 57. He was a die hard Mopar guy and was set on buying one when they were released. He was wealthy, and for sure could afford a 40-50k price tag.

I don't think the pricing hurt it that much... It wasn't cheap, but it had plenty of power on a decent chassis and nice interior. I think what killed it more than anything was that it looked like a Chevy Cavalier in it's first year, then they made it look like a riced 2dr Grand Am. If they could've pulled that engine off in a car that had lines like the G35, they'd be selling much better. So yeah, that's my opinion. On this topic, I think Chrysler's smart by making it a smaller market car. When they've got a bunch of hype built into and assuming sales go well, they can sell out all the previous buyers by making it higher volume and more affordable. Kinda like the 89 Miata...

chuyler1
04-28-2006, 11:10 PM
I think no matter what they do the car will sell like crazy the first year and maybe into it's second year. But in order to sustain the model line, it has to be affordable to the masses. Otherwise everyone that wants one will get it the first year and sales will drop.

They need 3 trim levels, a bare-bones V6, An LS V8 (nicer interior), and A luxury performance HO V8 for the enthusiast (nicer interior and power to boot). Have a turbo or SC kit ready for the V6 that is plug-and-play that will boost the output close to or exceeding the HO V8.

If they did that, it would sell like crazy! You'd have tuners lined up for the base model with cash in hand for the kit, You'd have every day joes buying the V8 LS, and you'd have those rich MOPAR fans looking for a ticket to 1968 layen down the cash for the performance model. You'd even get some rivalry among owners seeing who can put down the fastest track times V8 or V6.

http://gallery.srtforums.com/photopost/data/500/2009_Dodge_Challenger_TA_8.jpg

The New York Auto Show came and gone for those who anticipated the showing of the next SRT creation - 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8. Endless hours of office work time were wasted for those hungry performance fanatics in hoping that SRT Director Kipp Owen would début the next beast. Sore eye strains of the constant look at the computer monitor and not to forget the hand muscle fatigued fingers constantly clicking the mouse in search for an answer.

MOPAR fans don’t give up hope. SRT will show us in due time the next best muscle car that rival the upcoming Chevrolet SS Camaro and the Ford Mustang GT500.

http://gallery.srtforums.com/photopost/data/500/6_4ltr_Hemi_Engine.jpg

Remember, the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T in limited copies [50,000 are planned] will get the next generation Hemi 6.1 liter powerplant but not the SRT version. With the hoopla of baby boomers wanting bigger motors and not forgetting the domestic and foreign competition, SRT engineers are secretly developing the next SRT choice of powerplant – the 6.4 liter Hemi V8. The same engine that was shown to us SEMA fans late last year. Noting SEMA showing of the engine’s output at 510 Horsepower and 510-lbs of Torque, this beast maybe the top of its field when produce. Not to forget about two more Hemis (inlcuding a SuperHemi) will be joining the lineup but one may replace the current 6.1ltr in the foreseeble future. Retro engines are making a comeback.

The 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 will reside on the next generation ‘LY’ platform [codenamed LCX23] that will be shared by the 2009 Chrysler 300 'D', 2010 Dodge Charger, and hopefully the 2009 Dodge Magnum wagon. Yet, let me also reveal the mysterious fastback coupe that will share the same Challenger components that maybe dubbed the Cordoba. Planned production date begins in April 0f 2008 at the Brampton Plant. Tentative now but we will find out later whether the third shift can handle two more cars.

So where is the next showing? Perhaps at SEMA…among the MOPAR loyalists that would be the most appropriate location. Stay tune for more updates later.

We take the wheel of the Dodge Challenger concept car for a combination driving impression, focus group and publicity stunt

By Kevin Smith Email (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=115459#1) | Blog (http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline)

Date posted: 05-22-2006
What would you do if someone handed you the keys to a sexy zillion-dollar concept car? You'd go show it off to your buds, right?

So when DaimlerChrysler bravely agreed to let us take its Dodge Challenger concept car out in public and play for a day, we knew exactly where to go. The Challenger design study paves the way for a retro-revival production vehicle intended to fire passions in enthusiasts of all ages. (Doesn't "2007 Dodge Challenger" have a promising ring?) So in an exercise that was one part driving impression, one part focus group and one part crass publicity stunt, we spent 20 miles behind the wheel of the Challenger in real traffic, and showed up at two of Southern California's most popular Saturday-morning car-people gatherings.

Safe to say, we made an impression.

It was some spectacle, arriving at Donut Derelicts, the enduring Huntington Beach get-together in a modest strip mall at Magnolia and Adams. At a groggy 6:30 in the morning, the place was already packed, and all eyes turned to the striking Hemi Orange Challenger as we pulled in the driveway.

Or tried to.

This thing is low! And the tires are huge!

Its designers had insisted that the Challenger be seen as they had intended: sitting low on big-meat 20/21-inch rolling stock. This was a conscious trade-off, choosing a dramatic stance and fully stuffed wheelwells over real street drivability, since the tires rubbed badly on the bodywork. We wouldn't argue with their choice, since the car looks so good. But for a few uneasy moments there, with a hundred excited faces and dozens of cameras now focused on us, it was dicey. We had to take a couple of cuts to get the car squared up with the driveway, then ease up the incline with everything rubbing and groaning, before we could carry on with our grand entrance. No matter. The Challenger hit the savvy Donut Derelicts crowd right where they live and breathe.

Cool cars, some donuts and a lovable bunch of derelicts
Almost any kind of car and car person can show up at Donut Derelicts, but American muscle cars, classics and street rods are the prevalent themes. So not only did the Dodge Challenger concept car pull the looks, everyone there knew exactly what it was. Making our parade lap around the lot on the way to our staked-out-since-5-a.m. parking slot, we heard it constantly: "Hey, that's the Challenger." "Look, the Challenger's here." "Wow, somebody brought the Challenger."

The crowd swarmed over the car, naturally. Have a look at the video (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=115459#) but it was many bodies deep the whole time we were there. Mike Castiglione, the Challenger's exterior designer, and Alan Barrington, who did its interior, showed up to answer questions and take in the mob's reaction to their baby. "Where'd those seats come from?" "Are you really going to have a quarter-mile readout in the gauges?" "Did the side marker lights have to be that big?" "Are those wheels producible?" Of course, there was advice as well: "You gotta have a base V6, then a 5.7 Hemi, a 6.1, and finally a 6.1 supercharged." "You're doing a convertible in Year Two, right?"

Mike and Alan, whom we talked to extensively in our first Dodge Challenger article and video (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=108756), were gracious, interested and noncommittal. The official company line on the Challenger's production prospects is, "Still looking into it." PR honcho Scott Brown said that the outstanding questions include whether to go high-price/low-volume or low-price/high-volume, what plant had capacity to build it, fundamentals like that. OK. But to see the eager crowd at Donut Derelicts (and the ones who ogled this same car on the stand at the Detroit auto show (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/AutoshowArticles/articleId=108806)), and to hear how everyone talks about it, there's no way DCX decides against building this car now.

Rolling (and rubbing) down the road
For a show-stand beauty, the Challenger is remarkably roadworthy, but for one small detail: The rubber meets the road, and also lots of bodywork. The slightest bump or seam or contour in the pavement had the 275/40R21 rear tires hitting the inner fender liners, biting hard enough to slow the car down. And the 255/45R20 front tires scarfed the fender flares getting up the driveway into Donut Derelicts. So our "driving impression" was going to be a gentle tiptoe down the road rather than a proper blast.

Still, the Challenger managed to give us some sense of what a production version would feel like to drive. The engine, after all, is a dead-stock 425-horsepower 6.1 Hemi as used in SRT-8-version Chargers (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2006/dodge/chargersrt8/index.html) and Magnums (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2006/dodge/magnumsrt8/index.html), and it's bolted to a standard Viper (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2006/dodge/viper/index.html) six-speed manual gearbox. Even the chassis is a shortened (4 inches out of the wheelbase) Charger/Magnum/300C (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2006/chrysler/300/index.html) sedan unit, just as the original Challenger and Barracuda E-bodies were based on a cut-down B-body platform.

Since the basic shapes of the windshield, side glass and roof pillars echo the old Challenger, the view out from the cockpit does, too. The high beltline with its characteristic kickup over the rear wheels is also vintage Challenger and indeed, the long-hood/short-deck architecture recalls the proportions of all those pony car coupes from the mid-'60s and early '70s. The modern interpretation of the pistol-grip shifter feels right, the deep front seats (extra padding over Charger frames) offer lots of support, and the Flowmaster mufflers emit a lusty exhaust rumble. We expected a cramped backseat but the space is actually pretty usable, if dark.

As a road car, this auto-show beauty did ask us to overlook a few details, which is normal with these things. The doors had to be eased shut very gingerly, and the power windows and driver seat went dead when a fuse blew. Also, the instruments and other switches inside were all dummies, but the shapes and appearances bode well for what the production version would (will?) offer.

Of course, the big detail the Challenger asked us to forgive was the tire clearance. When the tires rub every time the wind changes, no one's going to learn much about the car's real performance. But we can see it hiding in there someplace. On paper, 425 horsepower, a six-speed manual and a curb weight of maybe 3,600 pounds could translate into the 4.5-second 0-60 time that DCX talks about. And the brakes and steering were accurate and responsive enough to confirm our sense that the car should stop and steer like a tautly sprung, short-wheelbase Charger that has shed a few hundred pounds. Can't be bad.

Crystal cruising
After inching and rubbing down Pacific Coast Highway from Donut Derelicts, we nosed the Challenger into the Crystal Cove Promenade, south of Newport Beach. This snazzy shopping center hosts its own Saturday car gathering, one that caters a little more to the Ferrari and Porsche set, but muscle cars show up there as well. Especially this Saturday, since the Mopar Club of San Diego had heard we were coming. A couple of "real" Challengers turned out, and it was fun to see them alongside this modern, weightier interpretation of their classic lines.

Also at Crystal Cruisers, as it's called, were a bunch of folks from DaimlerChrysler's Pacifica Advanced Design Center, the studio where the Challenger concept was born and built, just down the coast in Carlsbad. They were obviously enjoying the crowd enjoying their car. We've said the new Challenger looks a little like an old one that TV designer/customizer Chip Foose did his Overhaulin' thing to; and Chip was there as well, to check out the styling work of his Art Center classmate Mike Castiglione. Once again, the bodies packed deep around the Challenger, and the commentary came thick and fast. Not even the Gallardo Spyder insecurely clearing its pipes nearby distracted our crowd.

So, did we succeed in snagging a driving impression, creating a ruckus and drawing some reaction? On the driving impression, only sort of. As to the ruckus, oh boy, yes. Shamelessly so. This was playing to a real easy house. And based on this highly biased crowd reaction, the car clearly must go into production. Dodge's Challenger concept popped eyeballs and dropped jaws at the biggest grass-roots car get-togethers in town. Visitors from Mars would not have drawn this much interest. Unless they were driving a one-of-17 Hemi 'Cuda convertible.

Actually early 70's. It has the exact same lines as my roommates 73 Cuda. I don't think it could look anymore like that car. Funny, I was just thinking that it's lines (but not the details) were more similar to the 70-74 'Cuda than Challenger. Add some gills to the grille and front fenders, change the rear fascia, and you've got yourself a '71 'Cuda. Once these things actually come out, I wonder how long it will be before someone actually does make theirs look like a 'Cuda...

Challenger Concept could be parking next to you soon

Dodge has been doing some market research these days by sending its Challenger concept on the rounds (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/14/dodge-challenger-makes-unexpected-pit-stop-in-golden-state/). Autoblog reader Kurt spotted the beaut on Cruise Night at a Big Boy restaurant in Taluca Lake, Calif., where the carbon fiber-clad one-off was the object of everyone's affections. This is at least the second or third time the Challenger Concept has shown up unannounced in a parking lot, which is likely playing a part in Dodge's decision whether or not to make the car a reality in production form. Check out the link for some night shots of the Challenger Concept under the bright lights of Big Boy.

* I love that Big Boy...I used to go all the time including cruise nights...Cool place!

Dodge Challenger approved for production!

Multiple media sources are reporting that the Dodge Challenger (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/01/04/dodge-challenger-concept-photo-gallery/) coupe is a go, and that Chrysler will make the official announcement tomorrow at Daytona before this weekend's NASCAR Pepsi 400 Nextel Cup race.

The announcement is coming earlier than expected (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/06/19/dodge-challenger-production-decision-by-fall/). Word is that Chrysler will promote Challenger all summer to create buzz (that won't be hard) and drive traffic into its showrooms. This announcement comes the same weekend that the automaker is revealing a new ad campaign and fresh discounts for customers.

The Detroit news reports that the car should be in production by 2008, with a price slightly above that of the current Mustang. Only a V8 will be offered.

The Challenger Concept made its debut (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/01/08/detroit-auto-show-dodge-challenger-concept-debut/) at this year's Detroit show, and is powered by a 6.1L 425-horsepower HEMI V8.

Mopar fans, your wish has been granted. Now, let's see if GM holds up its part of the deal and greenlights the Camaro (the pressure to do so will be huge now with the Challenger announcement). As things stand, it looks like the ponycar wars are quickly moving from the show floor to the showroom.

Let the stoplight showdowns begin!

It's got the "retro styling" that people are always whining about plus the performance to back it up.

But until I see the price point, I'd still have to say that the new now discontinued vastly underappreciated 400HP, IRS equipped for 30K pontiac GTO is the best bang for you buck in the car biz right now

I have read a few articles stating that the new Challenger will indeed be a six speed. In fact, it will be the only car with the shared platform (300C, Charger, Magnum) to offer the stick shift. I also read this will be a lower production car and will ONLY come with a V8 (the 425 horse Hemi). However there's no doubt they will up the ante because chevy is considering stuffing engine from the new Z06 in a high performance model of the camaro.

I also read this car will be selling in the low to mid $30's. The great thing about this is that the car will not cost much to produce considering Dodge already has the platform for the car, the engine, and the manufacturing facility for it. That means lower price for all of us!

Performance will be VERY close to the new Shelby GT 500. One thing about this car is that it is beautiful, but it does weigh a lot, as does the new Camaro. But we do get IRS on both the new Challenger and Camaro!! Waaahooo! Ford's reasoning for not putting IRS in the new mustang, and don't even get me started on not putting it on the $42,000 (shocked) Shelby GT 500 because of manufacturing cost is not a good excuse for me. Fortunately Dodge and GM won't be dropping the ball in that department. Right now I'm likin' the Challenger!! Sign me up. Black with red racing stripes will do me in for good...

GM won't undercut the Vette like that.

GM won't undercut the Vette like that.

How's that undercutting it? Dodge puts the viper engine in the SRT-10 truck. Chevy is also contemplating producing a higher performing vette than the current Z06 (Blue devil/sting ray 600+HP supercharged). Even if the Camaro has the same engine as the Z06 vette there's still no way the camaro would be able to outperform it because of the weight and driving dynamics of the camaro. Chevy put the older Z06 engine (405 horse) in the CTS-V and now the LS2 in the GTO. They'll put it in that car in order to dust the Shelby GT 500. You're telling me Chevy will let ford have a 500 HP car while they only settle for 400HP? No way man, that's not how this business works.

Its undercutting it because you can get something faster/almost as fast as the Z06 for much, much cheaper.

A ram SRT-10 is a pickup, not a 2 door sports car. A camaro and vette are similar cars. Dodge wouldn't put a viper motor in another 2 dr, RWD coupe.

I have to aggree with you. Dodge wouldn't do that. Chevy will put they 500 hp in a camero though. Look at the 05 Z06 and the 06 C6. Both cars are 400 hp but the 05 Z06 is still faster and still out handles the new. It's all in the set up. And that's what we will have to wait and see.

manufacturing cost seems like as good an excuse as anything. first, an IRS is not as good as a solid axle for the drag racing use a GT500 is likely to see...they're not meant to be autocross cars. the money was spent in places ford figured mustang buyers would want it spent. second, ford had a solid-axle platform to start with for the GT500; dodge had an IRS platform handed to them.

Check out the 0-60 times of the previous SVT Cobra with an IRS vs. the new GT 500 Cobra without one. The previous SVT is down 110 horses and makes virtually the same time as the brand new GT 500. I can't believe some people buy into that theory that a live rear end gives you better drag performance. Pish posh if you ask me. Although I guess that's what a pony car should be...good in a straight line...

In 1969 the Camaro had the LZ-1 option while the vette had the L-88. Both had over 500 HP. Why not do it again? Carmaro = 4 seat pony car...not sports car. A sports car is typically a two seater with great weight distribution and low heft. What about in the 80's when GM came out with the Grand National? It was actually quicker than GM's vette halo car. Chevy's not going to let its camaro lovers down with a watered down version with only 400 horse in a car that is going to weigh 500 pounds more than a vette. There will be a higher output engine and it will be or at least very close to the LS7.

With production of the 2009 Dodge Challenger slated for next spring, it was only a matter of time before prototypes started showing up. What we have here isn't quite a full-blown prototype just yet, but our newest spy photos show what appears to be the front clip of a Challenger grafted onto the body of a Charger R/T. This is a common practice when engineers want to test airflow to the engine of a car that has a radically different grille design compared to existing models. Despite the heavy camouflage, it's clear the Challenger's front end will look almost identical to the prototype which should come as no surprise given that Dodge officials have already promised minimal styling changes for the production Challenger. With an official unveiling scheduled for the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, we expect this will be the first of many Challenger spy photos to come.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Its official debut is still months away, but details are starting to leak out about the 2008 Dodge Challenger. According to Automotive News, Dodge plans to roll out the Challenger in two phases. A 5,000-car limited-run 2008 Challenger SRT will be unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show in February. The SRT will use the 6.1-liter Hemi mated to a five-speed automatic.

For the 2009 model year, Dodge will expand the Challenger lineup to include both 6.1- and 5.7-liter Hemi versions to be shown at the 2008 New York Auto Show in March. A six-speed manual will be added and possibly a dual-clutch transmission. Dodge will increase the Challenger's production output to 30,000-35,000 cars in 2009, says Automotive News.

Say it with us now: create demand. Challengers won't roll off the line en masse next year. Instead, as we reported last month, Dodge is going to make just 5,000 of them for the '08 model year, all SRT models with 5.7- or 6.1-liter Hemis. In 2009, Dodge will widen the sluice some, with output expected to be 30,000 to 35,000 cars. That is also when six-speed manual and dual-clutch options could be added. The Challenger will take the stand next year at the New York Auto Show. And for those of you planning to buy a 2008 model, especially one with the 6.1-liter Hemi, say it with us now: residual value.

I'm sure they will. I think it's a great idea comming out with the SRT first then the normal car. That way the people that can afford to buy the car wont get screwed buy the mark up. It would suck to pay 50k (because of the mark up) for an stock car just to have the SRT come out 6 months later for the same price. I would expect the normal challenger to be around 24k.

And the charger/300 look like dressed up turds. The Challenger looks million times better. What a bargain for 37k, limited edition, instant collector car. IF you could get your hands on a 2008, it would be worth double that in no time I bet. I've paid close to that for a fuckin Volvo that has nothing, absolutely nothing on the Challenger in any category at all.

I don't really think there are a lot of cars that are actually going to appreciate these days. This could be a good car for Dodge, but I don't see it becoming a classic by any means.

Actually, the Volvo S60R and V70R only cost $40k to start, if you can still find an '07.

And they will not be boats. I saw it at the world fair in Dallas and it's a badass! I don't think it will make a classic (as in 63 stingray) but I'd be willing to bet it will hold it's value like the MINI Cooper does.

The Corvettes were are in a whole different league then the muscle cars. Like now, the only people that had them had money. The muscle cars where the average joe's car and by hot roders not classified as a muscle car. They where and still are a mix between sports car and american muscle.

I like what Canada is doing with every truck sold. Up to a $4,000 gas tax at time of purchase.

TinmanMS6
12-01-2007, 12:52 PM
Wow, that's crazy. Doesn't it make more sense to just increase taxes on gas? I don't really want to see higher gas prices, but it makes more sense to tax people on the gas they use, rather than the gas they *might* use. What if you bought a truck for a specific purpose and only drove it 5000 miles a year?

Buyers who shell out $40,095 (plus what's likely to be a staggering dealer surcharge) for the 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8 can at least rest in the knowledge that the cars they're getting are loaded to the gills with standard features. In fact, there are only three options. For $50, you can upgrade to summer tires (all-season performance rubber is standard). $890 replaces the base head unit with the MyGig infotainment/navigation system, and $950 adds a power sunroof. Everything else is part of the standard equipment list -- even a stint at the SRT Track Experience. Head on over to Allpar to see the complete rundown, which includes the minutiae like "6.1L badge." More info on the Challenger is coming very soon, so keep your eyes peeled as Chrysler gets into full ramp-up-the-excitement mode.

TinmanMS6

Offering a car with only summer tires is a liability in more northern areas. Somebody could be stupid enough to drive it in snow, get in an accident, and claim nobody told them that the tires were not intended for all seasons. It's much easier to escape that liability when somebody has to check an option box and pay extra to get the summer tires. That can make it difficult to claim ignorance.

12-04-2007, 02:45 PM

jred321

and all seasons on a front heavy (presumably), rwd car are still going to be terrible in the snow. the only thing it has going for it is the tires aren't that wide. they'll just be better on the days when it's cold and the roads are clear. i'd have to imagine liability isn't the reason for the all seasons. i'd have to lean more towards trying to make the car appeal to a more broad market which, if the hype reports are accurate, shouldn't be necessary, and/or tires that wear slower for people who just want to cruise instead of using their performance

Apparently people really want to buy the Dodge Challenger. So much so that 4,300 people put down deposits when Dodge opened ordering on Monday. A total of 6,000 orders have come in since then. If Dodge sticks to its claim of only producing 5,000 Challengers for 2008, then several of those orders will have to wait a year before taking delivery. All of the Challengers ordered will come in the SRT8 variant sporting a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 and a five-speed automatic transmission. Three colors are available - black, silver, and HEMI orange, the latter of which was the color of choice for more than half the orders. Deliveries will start in the Spring of 2008.
While the production version will be officially introduced at the Chicago Auto Show in February, it was also hinted that we will see some real "eye candy" later this week. While we wait for that, Allpar has come through once again, as a forum poster there photographed and uploaded the official dealer presales brochure, which shows us teasers of the production car's grille (bye-bye crosshair), fuel filler cap (awesome), wheel, and exhaust outlet.

So the powertrain in the SRT8 magnum will be powered by the 6.1/5 speed slush box?

I already hate it, that 5 speed auto is horrible for a car with this much power, I know because I've driven the SRT8 Magnum.
Plus the tail lights look cheap, they could have kept it looking the concept, with LED's, but lets not forget here, this is DODGE, cut costs at all costs.
Fugly, it needs a Manual standard and a slushbox optional, now!

Chrysler has announced that it will build 6,400 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 coupes for the United States, with a few more slated for Mexico and Canada.

In October 2007, it was reported that Chrysler intended to produce a limited run of just 5,000 units of the 425-horsepower, 6.1-liter Hemi V8-powered Challenger, while just three weeks ago, Chrysler told Inside Line that it had already received more than 9,000 orders for the 2008 model.

Dodge has priced the Challenger SRT8 at $37,995, including a $675 destination fee. However, with what has become an issue of supply and demand, expect real-world sales transactions to skyrocket.

What this means to you: If you're not already at the top of the 2008 list, better look to next year.

Orders > Production for the year? That is always good news for any business, come on Chrysler, don't screw it up, capitalize on it!

jred321
01-21-2008, 12:32 PM
shouldn't chrysler be making as many as they can sell? isn't that what's best for business? the dealers are the ones who will be able to sell them for higher dollar amounts which won't feed back as profit for chrysler. if chrysler made more then the dealers wouldn't be able to charge premiums so would make less per sale but they'd move more cars which means higher #s for the parent company

TinmanMS6

Chrysler's had a problem in the past with over-producing cars that are hot, and then diluting the value of them and killing sales. Limiting production makes it a much more desirable product and builds hype. Another problem Chrysler's always faced is shitty resale, which limited production definitely helps. There's a philosophy in the auto business that says that you should produce "one too few" of a model to keep demand up. Chrysler's got bigger things on its mind right now than making a few quick bucks off this car. They're building brand value for the long haul.

It was also the fact that they had shit interiors, drove like shit(they're a few exceptions, the PT cruiser not being one), and we're fleet queens, with poor reliability to boot. That definitely murdered the sales of Chrysler's products.
