HA i gave it 100 miles..how sad is that..my poor little baby, i raped on it sooo early..i gave my mustang 1000 miles b4 anything,,why not this one..lol..the manual says if desired 1000 or 600 miles..i took that as a have some fun when you want..

Since my order was comparatively late, 2-3 other dealers were involved in the deal, and it had to be driven from where it was delivered in MI--320-odd miles on it when I got the keys.
As much as I wanted to give it a break-in, I couldn't. Too much excitement from buying my first new car, and the fact that the 3 gives off a puppy-like vibe--too much energy for it's own good, and I'm happy to oblige ;)

You need to run it hard to break it in properly. You only get one chance to properly seat the rings, and this is it.

I'm up to 154 miles so far since Sat. :) Already installed the rear bumper guards my wife bought me for my B-day. Added a Zoom-Zoom decal under the rear wiper and RainX'd the windows. Loving every minute of this little beast. (thumb)

Believe it or not, I actually read the front half of the manual and the little "quick start" guide. (rtfm)
That was 6mo ago, but one or both said there was a 1k break-in...

I was fairly gentle with it until 1k - 1.5k.

I don't think I've ever red lined it, or taken it over 150kph. Yet.

i actually did go easy for the first 400 or so but i couldn't hold out any longer... and that was on a regular 3s... you guys with the speed that held out till 1000 miles have more patience then me.

when i got my p5 the dealer said first 500 miles then oil change at 1000 or 500 i dont remember and BAM go from there.....

well when i went for the first oil change one of the mechanics told em the p5 is rev happy...needless to say i followed some of his advice and the p5 loves to chill at 4k rpm...even though its gas happy and gets annoying after awhile i do it every now and then. even though its not the best of things. i have calmed down about it. but then again look at my name :)

Agreed, there are a couple really useful and informative articles floating around the web about this.

I've also spoken with engine builders and one guy who works on a team that builds engines for a 'minor league' professional race car, and often got the same story... "run it hard right off the bat to seat the rings better". Supposedly your 'one chance' is within the first 20 miles or so. Variations in power can be as much as 10% between a car that was broken in hard and one that was babied (the hard broken in car making MORE power).

I bought my car and then immediately drove 280 miles round trip to the nearest casino so my wife could TRY to win the car payoff. then she drove it back. after that its been a big smile and pleasure driving my MS3.

Oh and no we didn't win like usual lol

if you think about it.. unless you had the 1st test drive, and you trust the dealer didnt take it out.. then it was ran hard before you bought it. i know plenty of dealers who take the sporty cars out to see what they are made of after hours. when you take the test drive they tell you to give it some juice.

I looked into my car for the first time as it sat in the truck, still shrink wrapped, without anything done to it. As we filled out all the paperwork, they prepped it for me. I took it off the lot with 8 miles on it that day. No other customers touched it.

Although for break in, I haven't pused it past 5K rpm...much. I'm nearing 600 miles, then I'll load up some synthetic oil and take it out to the country for some real fun. I'm surprised I haven't gotten a ticket already though. A quick spool through 4th and you're already doing 80 or more...
