Hello all. I recently(back in november) bought a 02 midnight blue P5 manual w/ 52K miles. Love this car!!! Ive been searching this site for a few months now, seeing what others have done to their cars, what common problems there are, ect....great site, very informative!

Here was little incident i had this weekend, it was time to change plugs/wires since i didnt know when the last time the previous owner did that. well i disconnected the neg battery cable and got to work. the install went without a problem. but when i reconnected the battery cable the horn beeped once. didnt think anything of it and tried to start the car, it wouldnt start. all i heard was one click. then all of a sudden the horn started to beep out of control, my hazard lights and my alarm light on the steering column started blinking. so i disconnected the battery again and sat there w/ a puzzled look on my face. reconnected the battery again and again got the same results as the last time. i took the fuse for the horn out so i could take a look around w/o it blasting in my ear. well once i took the fuse out and tried to start her again, it started fine. no CEL, nothing! i put the fuse back in and took a ride around the block. everything was working fine and has been ever since. could i have done something to the car on accident? ive done this type of work on previous cars ive owned and never encountered this? any ideas or thoughts?

I've heard of one other person having that problem in an 01 or 02 protege sedan, and as far as I know he fixed it the same way you did. I wouldn't worry about it

Welcome to the forum! May your Mazda serve you well.

What happened is when you reconnected the battery you triggered the alarm. The oem alarm has a built in starter kill in it. Once you disabled the alarm everything will be fine. Nothing to worry about.
