Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS Replacement

2002 Mazda Protege, Manual tranny, girlfriends ride...

Scanner says VSS needs replaced. Lost all speed/odo readings. Dealer says part is $75, local shops want $250 to replace. Anyone done this before, what's involved, is there a DIY on this site somewhere?

I know that this is an old discussion, but I have the same problem.

I am not able to remove the VSS from the tranny. It seems to be stuck. Do you have any tips for me?
