They look preeeetty dont they!!? :D
I recieved them recently. Now i need to work on a spare headlight i have. It will take some time but i'm sure i'll get there. I still need ballasts, bulbs and a few things but while i get money for that i can work on the way of mounting the projectors in the headlight. Revs has been helpful and gave me advice (thanks).
My next step is taking apart my headlight and adapting the projector. The most dificult part. (enguard) After that, I'll get the ballasts and bulbs etc etc.
Then wiring wich can be a bit of a pain :p I'll try make it as clean as possible.
I'll keep ya informed.

Hella 4th gen ballasts and Hella Ignitors
Philips D2s 4300k Bulbs
E55 Shrouds.
I was considering parting out, but i changed my mind. My baby needs a car he can depend on, so do i, haha. Funny, while doing this, my wife asked me if it is neccesary. I tell her that this will increase the baby's security increasing night visibility haha. Then she gives me The Look, i tell her, "i'm not joking, dear!" hehe
For the project results? Visibility is superb. The illumination is distributed on the road much better than before. I can see road signs much better now. I love driving at night now. Protege owners ask me oftenly where did i get them. I am very happy with the results. Will never ever go halogen again, ever.

Wow man - AWESOME job. I like the pictures of them off almost more than I like them on. They look SOOOO clean.
Mind if we (I) ask you to ballpark your total cost for the project ?
Chicoloco
07-26-2007, 09:51 AM
Let's see,
140 for projectors
140 for ballasts, ignitors and it came
with used but in good condition bulbs. (they cost ~80 new)
40 for shrouds (chrome ring)
30 for cf sheet
20 for screws, nuts, epoxy
45 Wire Harness
200 for new headlights -
615~Total.
Hundred of hours reading and searching...
I was lucky ballasts came with bulbs. But ive seen the projectors(e55s), ballasts and ignitors go for lower than that. Plus what i saved for doing it myself. Easily ~250 bucks. I bought new headlights because my front clear lens were in bad shape. I asked for someone making the lights for me and they estimated around $600 sending the lights to him w/o harness and installation (obvious) I saved a few bucks on that too. You can see the results, i love driving at night, and they are so OEM like (all parts i used are OEM) and how many proteges with projectors do you see (bah(gun) at the aftermarket not making them). You guys remember the Xenon dude that was removed from selling hid kits. I was so but so close on buying one of those kits. They were around 300 bucks at that time.

Hmmm.... Now i'm inspired. I'll see if I can possible re-mod this for a 99-00 model headlight. Mockup should be about the same i'd imagine, if not easier to do. Luckily I have a spare set of headlights as well to work on. How did you remove the front lenses? Did you bake them like i've heard about on other threads? What would the average cost of this project be? I'd appreciate any input you could give me. --Thanks!

This thread can help you pop up your headlights:
http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114394
Heat guns too do job as well. If you have one, preheat the oven 200f-250f 10 mins. Turn it off and put the headlight in for 10 mins. Retrieve you headlights and use something to pry, and use the heatgun to help. It will be easier after heating the headlight.

You can save money just blacking out the reflector and not using CF. I think CF now is more expensive now. You can save a few bucks on making your own shrouds. Maybe i over estimated the lugs and nuts a few bucks, i went so many times to the hardware store, lol. Having an extra set of headlights is a plus! You save a lot there.

get everything within arms reach. like your paint, your screw nuts and bolts your hole saw drill bits . just to make the job easier. ohh and dont forget the headlights in the oven. i did 250-300 oven temp and left it for 5 -7 mins. preheat is the key and if it dont pry easy put it in for about another minute. just be patient.
save yourself time and money . time to get everything you need so no unnecessary trip to the store and money for the gas. lol

and abraham - you running the hella ballast. i came across a dude with a 1990's jetta. and did a retro and when i got to the stop light i rolled my windows and asked him what type of ballast he was running . he states the hella. and they were freaking bright. i loved it. !! i was wondering where you got it. ? but i think he didnt have a cutoff shield of any type. so it was just everywhere. but then thats a no no. but with a cutoff shield i think it would be still bright. it jess didnt have the shield so that was a (chair)

01-11-2008, 08:20 AM
Hm, i found them from ebay, but you can find fs threads at hidplanet or theretrosource. I don't think an aftermarket is brighter or OEM. It should practically be the same, since both are 35w. Unless his was ballast is higher like 50w.
I'm pretty sure you thought the jetta was so bright because the glare was everywhere :S. So when the cops see you and then see the jetta, he's gonna stop that jetta and ask him to put his lows, and when he tells the cops, "oh those are my lows" and then the cop says "oh really, are those hids...?" etc etc etc..
Hid projector put the light to the ground, where you need it.

ohh bill. your car is everywhere. you mazdaholic /slash whore. lol j/k
what ballast are you using oem or aftermarket ?
and abraham - you running the hella ballast. i came across a dude with a 1990's jetta. and did a retro and when i got to the stop light i rolled my windows and asked him what type of ballast he was running . he states the hella. and they were freaking bright. i loved it. !! i was wondering where you got it. ? but i think he didnt have a cutoff shield of any type. so it was just everywhere. but then thats a no no. but with a cutoff shield i think it would be still bright. it jess didnt have the shield so that was a (chair)

Thanks :-). It's like a wiper guard piece, i painted it black with the rest of the hood.
Djmarelis, you can soft mount them and then balance/align them with a leveled flat surface.
I think red's projectors are hella 90mm units. Probably have an ECE cutoff. and similar to other hella projectors. They are know to have good ouput. They used to be used for racing applications.

That's very clean, love how you blacked it all out, can I ask why you still used the ORANGE bulbs for your blinkers? Why not have it match and get like blue or something? Just wondering, very PROfessional install!
P.S.
And you baking your lense is the reason why I didnt bake my headlights while doing the HALOs, on my car! LOL!

You're probably looking at $400 or so for projectors (fx-35 bixenon), ballasts, bulbs and wiring harness.
You want higher quality projectors and ballats, it's gonna cost more
Spare headlights are up to you to decide what kind you want, then, whatever the retrofitter decides he wants paid

The_Jaf, that's ridiculously sexy! You do the work yourself on the retorfit? Can I ask what was done? Is it a vacume formed mold? Any pics during the retrofit? I'm having TL's with zkw lens swap retrofited into Depo lights as well.

Yeah I dealt with Josh from Izntrbl, did a good job but his communication is kind of lacking. I hear good and bad things about him. But for me he did a great job got it back to me in 7-8 weeks from when he started. He's very busy though so the turnaround time can be long.

Hey,
The retro setup I made myself from an 04 E-320 Benz.. they are h7 projectors. It took me about 3 to 4 months to finish. The rest of the car is a 2002 Lx, I got all the parts for the body painted and I installed all myself, A Little work here and there, also have Mazdaspeed struts on with lowing springs and rear sway bar, That's about it.

Alright, Callie wants ZKW lenses....and she doesn't want blemish lenses, she wants perfectly clear like mine are......
i think she can deal with a slight blemish lens. lol
She didn't even care about sharper cutoff or the color at the cutoff, she just likes how the lenses themselves aren't cloudy when the lights are on compared to stock
So, chico, ZKW-R's are going to be ordered tomorrow.
