Try to be a little more specific. You haven't relocated any solenoids to the firewall have you?

no not at all i dont know how else to explain it, just when i step on the gas it has this loud ticking sound and when i let go it stops and then when im at idle it will tick for like 30sec. then go for about 30sec. then come back. i dont know what it is.

intermittant Check Engine Light (CEL), or none at all?

How many miles, what are your relevant modifications?

Ive had the same thing since like 2k miles. It sounds like a sticky lifter. Its prolly just coincidence but since I put my AWR pan on the other day it is gone.

Mine ticks at idle but not when I'm on the gas.

There's a valve/solenoid of some sort on the top of the cold pipe just before the throttle body. I traced (what I think is the same ticking you refer to) to this. When you hear it, grab the solenoid and you'll feel it clicking......or you could have a blown engine :(

take ur heatsheild off the exhaust manifold and check for a crack in the exhaust manifold..look close but please make sure the motor id cooled down first..u might have to take ur O2 sensor out to pull sheild off completely (autozone 19.00 socket)

it is most likely the solenoid that is located at the top of the stock IC cold pipe (the one going to the throttle body) it is a gold canister with one wiring harness and 2 vac lines, one line coming from the passenger side of the engine bay and one coming from the intake mani just past the throttle body... look for that and possibly re-re-located it to the intake mani off the firewall.

he said he didnt relocate any solenoids, that was the first thing I asked him.

but if he has a fmic he had to at least touch that solenoid (or a shop did!)

I zip tied mine to my stb when I did my intake, where/how would I relocate it to stop the ticking? Thanks in advance, and if the ticking goes away, my wife will thank you as well.

with my hiboost kit they gave me a simple l bracket that you put on top of the intake mani... it still ticks but doesn't sound in the cock pit (lol racing)

Mazda designed the cold piping leading to the throttle body with a plastic tab comming off the top. The solenoid we are speaking of was mounted there. When you change out the stock piping, you lose that mounting location, and often times people will relocate the solenoid to the firewall, or elsewhere. You did not hear the ticking with the stock piping mounting location for two reasons:
1.) The solenoid was away from the firewall.
2.) The solenoid was mounted to rubber/plastic which deadened the sound.
Any time you mount the solenoid to the frame, the firewall, or anything metal that is either connected to the frame/firewall or just close to it, the sound will be translated into the cabin. My advice to you is to mount it away from the firewall as close to where it originally was as possible-- and put a rubber spacer/grommet in between the solenoid and what you're mounting it to.

I had a ticking noise on my Protege too. Turned out it was the crank getting scored.
