Been driving now for a week with the CAI on my Speed3. Love the sounds, love the new found power.
I have made 3 seperate trips 2 of them 40 miles and today a 60 mile trip. I know the trip puter isn't super accurate but I know for sure my mileage on the highway with cruise is way better. Today on the 60 mile trip I got.......
http://www.natattacks.com/ms3/34mpg.jpg

34 MPG!!! The other 2 trips were similar, just a little less. Just comparing to my trip puter mileage before the CAI install, the mileage on trips is definitely better. Anybody else notice the same thing?
Man this car is sweet, 260 HP and it gets BETTER mileage than my 2006 Mazda 3 GT.... (at least when I'm keeping my foot out of it!) :D :D
Cruise set at 70 mph.

wow thats impressive, my stupid poky p5 cant even average 25 even when I drive like a Grandma

i noticed a slight in crease in milage with my cai also.
i averaged about 28mpg with plenty of abuse !! got 320 miles on that tank and filled it at about an eighth of a tank.

Heh, I regularly get 29-32 MPG with mine....I don't drive in "grandma" mode often either.

That's quite an impressive number, flyrevs.

likely caused by reduced pumping losses. The efficiency of the engine gained by a free-flowing intake is likely giving the engine less work to do (and therefor less fuel consumed to do said work) when trying to suck air in.

Good reason to buy a CAI! It will pay for itself in only 12,448 miles**. Not bad.

**Factored this way:
factory gets avg. 25mpg. gas costs 2.75/gallon. this is 11 cents per mile.
CAI gets 32 avg. 32mpg. gas costs 2.75/gallon. this is 8.59 cents per mile
difference per mile is 2.41 cents.
Average cost of CAI is $300.
Takes 12,448 miles to pay it off.

Nice equation except you have to factor in all the times people wil stomp on it and it causes the motor to drink more gas. With more efficency on fuel comes more fuel need at WOT.
nice try though.

still worth getting the CAI.

I just drove about 80 miles, cruising at about 75-78 mph the entire way. My average MPG was 32. Around town im getting no less than 24!

been shooting around town since yesterday after installing mine and notice around 25mpg. with gas prices at 3.20 a gallon(nor cal) this will make me happy again.

With the CAI did any of you see a reduction in the soot on the tailpipe ?

This is great information. My wifes only hang up on letting me by an MS3 is the fact that it needs premium gas. I drive 65 round trip for work everyday and now that I have seen some real world numbers I have more ammunition for my cause.

It helps, I've been given a yellow light byt the wifey(headbang). Need more evidence though. Does Mazda advertise an efficiency increase along with the horsepower, I've only seen the horsepower.

That would be helpful too. I'd like see some numbers for that.

3.20 for GAS? in Cali......Damn someone needs to blow up that state. thats fucking ridiculous.

last time i was home i was buying super 93 at exxon for 2.42.
Do they hand out little wetnaps with lube before they....errr...... you pump? :D

Question are you guys actually calculating mileage or using the silly trip thingy?
i wanna see these things
1. GAS type ie Exxon, cheveron, Cheap shit
2. Miles
3. Gallons refilled
4. Driving style, terrain (all down hill might help gas mileage....you think?
5. Given time i want to see hard data with mutliple tanks of gas used not just one.
6. Compare actual mileage to the damn trip meter.
I might opt for a MS CAI but i wanna these things first.

So who's going to document?

Getting 34 mpg on a one way 60 mile trip is NOT a good indication of actual gas mileage. Driving my bone stock MS3 from Calgary to Winnipeg this past winter resulted in gas mileage in the 34 mpg range, but coming home it was in the 26 mpg range. Want to know why.....big tail/head winds.

A CAI is not going to make a huge increase in gas mileage over time.

I agree with justa4banger, good data would be needed. You should be able to get a good idea as to whether the change in fuel economy is signficant with around 60 tanks of fuel, 30 stock, 30 with MS CAI. If we have a bunch of people write in their mileage based on a few simple rules we should be able to see if the CAI really has an impact on mpg.

My process for fill up would be:
1. First: fill tank at local station until it stops the first time (no topping off).
Reset Tripodometer.

2. When ready, return to local station (preferably the same one) and fillup until it stops the first time (again no topping off). Record miles, gallons used and do the calculation of miles/gallons. Post here on a sticky thread with a yes or no as to whether the car has a CAI.

Example:
Miles: 200
Gallons: 8
m/g= 25
CAI: no

Because its unlikely anybody is going to answer all the questions we might want, it might be best to keep it simple. It would be nice to get tons of info like terrain, driving style, outdoor temp, octane, brand etc but those can be subjective and with the above we could at least answer the question of whether CAI seems to have a real impact on fuel economy.

No, looks the same to me. I even cleaned out the tailpipe completely to see a difference and nothing...25 miles later after hitting it hard same thing...hehe But I love my CAI and BOV.

So wheres the Data? i can get a CAI from the dealer for 285.00 I'm just waiting to see if this is really worth it.

I took a trip from Nashville to Knoxville on I-40 yesterday. I usually average 75-105 mph and would get 25mpg prior to the MS CAI. With CAI yesterday I averaged 30 mpg using the same speed.

after having my cai for a few weeks now, there is definately an increase in mpg. i do mostly hwy driving and i regularly see 30mpg now. i drive the same if not harder just to hear the turbo/BOV. i sure as hell cant average 34mpg though...not even at 60mph !

The "sooty" look in the pipe is only due to the Direct Injection, it is not a sign of any kind of tuning problem (Incorrect fuel/air ratio, etc.) The fuel is injected DIRECTLY into the combustion chamber, not back in some runner in the intake manifold. Injecting upstream in the manifold results in evaporation of a portion of the charge, but direct injection results in no evaporation, hence a denser fuel charge and resulting "sooty" look in the exhaust. This denser charge also serves to cool the combustion chamber, allowing a fairly high (9.5-1) compression ratio. Don't worry about it!(chair)

I dunno... most successful Mazdaspeed ever, in terms of critical praise and disappearing from dealer lots. Also the turbo 2.3 is used in other Mazda cars which you couldn't say about the MSP or MSM. Got to be better profit margins for Mazda.

I just drove 650 miles in cruise control mode. The trip computer indicated 27.4 MPG, but I calculated 25.52 MPG. My grandma died and I drove 325 miles to the funeral, then 325 miles back home all in cruise control on the freeway and light accelerations in town. Got a ticket btw. In-appropriate lane change. Damn slow drivers in the left 2 lanes, so i used the right lane to go around. Half of the trip was in rain.

It's $3.63 for premium in central Texas.
