Alright, this may be my first post, but i have done my homework. I went through some 400 posts that contained the word "noise" and still have not found a good description of what i hear. Now with that out of the way...i regress.

I have a 2003 MSP, no modifications i.e. bone stock, 34000 miles. I just bought it and have began to notice a noise while accelerating. With the windows up it seems to be coming from the passenger side foot well. Now that it is warm and the windows down i can easily hear the same noise, but louder (duh). It only occurs while accelerating starting in 3rd gear at about 2500-3000 rpm and continues even in 4th and 5th. At freeway speed (65-70) I only hear it when i give the car some gas, not WOT, just a little. It sounds like a straining gear noise. Maybe even a little like a lot of air being sucked into the engine (but not quite). Almost sounded "wet" with the windows open, only noticed this once. At first a passed it off as the winter tires but it is not constant like that would be.

Any help would be appreciated. This is my first turbo car, also first with rims bigger than 15" but not my first Mazda. My hope is I am over reacting and someone is going to say it is normal, but at least i'll know.

Is the noise a high pitched whirring? If so your hearing your turbo spool up. The turbo on the MSP is a bit on the loud side.

Rear motor/tranny mount. I would definatly check that out. When I blew mine the first time it did the same thing.

I actually took it to a dealer and had them look at it under warranty. Their "master technician" for Mazda said the sound i am hearing is probably the turbo and he heard no un-Mazdaspeed noises. I just hope they are right because the warranty expires in June. Thanks tho.

I'm betting on a wheel bearing. I'll post a link to my experience below.

Well, turns out it was the winter tires. Bridgestone Blizzaks, they made the unusual noise. Got my tires swapped to summer tires and noise is gone. But The tire shop was nice enough to screw-up my recently adjusted alignment, poorly balance the tires and loosely attach the center caps on the rims so now i only have three. All of which THEY are paying for!

Just avoid Tires Plus. They Suck.

Any idea how much it would be to replace the wheel bearings? Could i just remove the hub and take it to the dealer? Or is it possible i could replace them myself tho i've heard they are press in. I dont have a dealer close to me (cryhard)
